I feel better after switching from coffee to Bang/Reign

Okay, this may sound strange, but recently I’ve switched from coffee to bang or reign energy drinks(usually only at pre workout time , or around my workout) and I feel so much better. When I was drinking 1-2 cups of coffee my anxiety was worse and I always had that “impending doom, sinking chest feeling”. Kind of like when you ride a roller coaster. Most people who deal with anxiety will know what I’m talking about. The funny thing is coffee MAKES ME LETHARGIC. I honestly don’t even get it. Coffee causes me a combination of anxiety and lethargy. Also , my acid reflux was horrible which is pretty common, though.

I stopped consuming coffee , or espresso type drinks and now I’ll just drink a bang or reign 2/3 hours after waking up and 1 hour or 30 mins before my workout. I have a nice steady energy and focus with these and no crash. They help my energy without that dark, anxiety feeling.

My theory is maybe I was getting more caffeine drinking coffee due to different brew strengths, brands, etc? 🤔 vs now, I know I’m getting 300 mg which is enough caffeine for the day and I won’t consume any more? I drank the coffee black or with stevia.

Thoughts ? Lol . Honestly Bang>Reign though. VPX plug right here 😂😂

I’m the opposite but definitely a large range of caffeine content based on brands which could attribute to your varying response. I can do 400mg from Dunkin’ or Starbucks and feel great and be lethargic from a bang lol. But whatever works for you i would stick with.

i believe espresso has 40mg caffiene per ounce of liquid. So, if you drank two 8oz "cups" you would be getting 640mg caffeine. Your theory may be spot on. But, most typical coffee beans only have 60-90mg caffeine per 6oz. If you were drinking regular coffee and 16oz then you're wrong lol

I'm the opposite, If i drink more than 100mg caffeine now in a given day, i have anxiety through the roof (i understand that chest reference, unfortunately) It's odd because i use to be able to consume LARGE amounts of caffeine before i turned 30, now that im 31 a single 8oz of instant coffee when waking is the only caffeine i get now. Plus side is im getting 8.5hrs of solid sleep a night now lol

Biggest thing for me is the energy drinks arent as hard on my stomach. I dont drink much coffee these days because it wrecks my digestive system. Energy drinks tend to go through a lot cleaner.

Also doesn't bang have b vitamins? That might be making the caffeine experience more enjoyable it does for me.

If it does, its pixie dusted in. Negligible amount to notice a difference IMO.

Many polyphenols are neuroactive and may explain your differing response as energy drinks lacks these in almost 100% of cases. Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is common polyphenol in coffee, of course in varying amounts depending on roasting and brewing procedures. CGA was identified to be about 1/3 as stimulatory as caffeine in mice. Decaff coffee and CGA have been shown to affect alertness and cognitive function in humans. I personally get more anxiety from coffee compared to straight caffeine. The addition of L-theanine helps however, and I still drink coffee as I enjoy the taste. Coffee polyphenols also negate the negative effects of caffeine on telomere length and may independently enhance exercise performance. Coffee is linked to reduced mortality due to the polyphenols and not the caffeine content. Maybe additional variance is explained by the gut microbiome since many polyphenols exert effects directly on it. Here are references:

Edit: While this doesn't apply to Band/Reign but many energy drinks also feature taurine as an active ingredient. Taurine is an amino acid neurotransmitter that can interact with both the GABA and glycine systems in the brain to have a calming effect. This could have an effect similar to L-theanine, although likely weaker, where it blunts some of the hyperstimulation from caffeine resulting in more of a focused effect. In fact, some research in animal models suggests that certain rations of L-theanine/taurine and caffeine can enhance the energy producing effects or blunt the energy producing effects of caffeine. For those that do not handle coffee taurine may be a good addition to a straight caffeine source. Its presence in the blood is associated with telomere length. It has been shown to enhance anaerobic performance and reduce DOMS without impacting the post-wo inflammatory response needed for proper adaptations while limiting muscle breakdown produced by oxidative stress but not impacting post-wo oxidative stress production also needed for proper adaptations. I'm the same. I much prefer an energy drink to coffee. They usually have a little choline or something in them too. Also, like yourself, I find coffee sedating sometimes.

Coffee (not the caffeine) can be harsh on the gut especially if your gut is sensitive or going through a sensitive time (ie. increased stress in your life). I totally get what you said....

Must be the polyphenols and amazing post brother.

Most energy drinks have electrolytes too which may explain why. Less dehydration = less anxiety too.

Great tea , which has l theanine, never makes me anxious for that reason but makes me severely nauseous. Even green tea extract but to a lesser degree

To me, I can take Yerba Mate tea. I drink probably a pot a day. For some reason, the active ingredient (perhaps caffeine) gives me energy but minimal edginess.

Yet, coffee, energy drinks, even green tea makes me so anxious and paranoid. I cannot even have a quarter cup of the stuff.

If you have lethargy, I could guess it might be ADHD (as stimulants actually cause them to recalibrate and slow down).

If it is anxiety, it might be some underlying anxiety, etc. problems.

Try Yerba Mate and see what happens.

Green Tea polyphenols are known for possible leading to nausea or stomach upset. They are best absorbed on an empty stomach though so its a win/lose for some:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4665468/

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15958649

The electrolyte amounts of most energy drinks are insignificant given the amount of fluids provided, any benefit of hydration gained is from the water/fluid content of the drink.

Also through roasting many of the polyphenols in coffee oxidize and they become more acidic/abrasive to the GI tract. Not all coffee preparations will have this effect.

Note directed at you but anyone reading:

If anyone loves coffee and yet gets GI upset, look for a brand that uses the HealthyRoast process that prevents this to lessen GI upset.
