How to search PubMed

First, go to pubmed.

Under the drop-down menu to the right (should say “PubMed” by default) of the search bar, select “MeSH” (Medical Subject Headings).

Type in the topic you’re interested in. Let’s use “ACE inhibitors” as an example.

You will be taken to a page with multiple MeSH terms matching your search. Here you will have to choose one that you are interested in. Do this by clicking on the blue hyperlink. In this case I’ll click “Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors.

On the next screen you’ll have a bunch of options called subheadings. If you are searching a broad topic like we are now and would like to restrict the results to papers discussing your term rather than simply just mentioning it then click the box next to check “Restrict Search to Major Topic headings only”.

Then I usually select one or a few of the subheading boxes, which will narrow down the results even further. This time, I’ll choose “standards” and “pharmacokinetics”. Now off to the right you will see a empty text box labeled search builder. Below this box there is a drop-down menu. From here we select OR and then click add to search builder.

Now in the box you will see ( “Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors/pharmacokinetics”[Majr] OR ”Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors/standards”[Majr] )

Go ahead and click “search pubmed” right underneath the box.

This returned 262 results. From here on the right you can select filters such as your only interested in human studies then under Species click Humans. Or say you wish to search for a specific article type like a Multicenter Study. Then again from the filters to the left under Article Type we will click More and then Multicenter Study. You can play around with these filters to help narrow down your search and if you narrow it down to much to where you aren’t getting results you can always deselect filters or change MeSH terms

Now say what you’re interested in is finding a compound found in nature which has ACE inhibiting potential. For this I will start over by again selecting MeSH from the drop down menu next to the search bar and type in ACE Inhibitors. Again I click the blue hyperlink labeled Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors and this brings me to the MeSH subheadings page. This time don’t select anything. To the right underneath the search builder box I will select AND instead of OR and then click add to search builder.

This will put ”Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors”[Mesh] in the box.

From here I go back up to the search bar and with MeSH still selected from the drop down I type in herbs. From the results I see Plants, Medicinal so I click this hyperlink which brings me to the subheadings page page. Make sure AND is selected in the drop down and click add to search builder.

Now the box reads (“Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors”[Mesh]) AND “Plants, Medicinal”[Mesh]

Click search pubmed. This time I get 69 results. I limit it to human studies and this brings it to 39 studies. From here I proceed to browse the research.

Well that’s it. Happy searching!

You just wasted a lot of time typing all that out. I'd say 80% of the people on here don't even know how to use the search function here on anabolicminds, or even Google.

Thanks Josh for posting this up for us. I know a lot of people will find it useful to use.

Came in here thinking I could actually teach Josh a thing or two, left disappointed :(
