How much protein?

How many grams of protein do you take right before or right after you work out? Please specify how much b4/after if possible. Just curious

40-50g about 45-60min before, then about the same right after workout. The amount if going to depend on your LBM. I use that as opposed to weight like most do.

I'm essentially the same as J stated above. 40-50 grams of protein from different sources about 1-1.5 hours prior to training. Post workout I'll take in between 60-65 grams of mixed protein.

i take in 40 pre and post and another 30-40 from solid food within an hour of my w/o. i read the body can only utilize 40g at a time, so i make sure my shakes and meals have about 30-40g. i could be wrong though.

pretty much same as above. Usually like 50 grams in a meal pre-workout 1.5-2 hours pre and then 50-60 with my post-workout meal.

On the subject of protein, are we still consuming 30-40 grams upon waking up in that catabolic state, or is that outdated?

I haven't been focusing on taking protein pre workout. I usually focus on some good carbs and maybe some healthy fats for pre workout and then focus on 40g for post workout.

my thoughts were that protein is a bad source of energy, what is the point of a pre workout protein shake?

not saying that...when I'm training hard I'm taking in close to 250g/day (spread throughout the day), so it's innevitable that I'm getting some protein close to when I workout...I just wasn't focusing on protein pre workout.

Ok just making sure :) yea i don't focus on it really there is protein in all my meals so its not really that big an issue(i take in about the same as you ~250grams a day)

I like having a good flow of amino acids circulating during training, hence the protein powder prior to training. Have you ever done protein prior to working out?

Thanks Bolt: I was just making a point that, IMO, a pre workout protein shake is not really important...again, protein is a bad source of energy. but gotta make sure you get that post workout one in though!

Protein pre-workout isn't really for energy though (although it still can/will provide it.) Thats why you are taking in carbs.

I think hes just stating he doesn't take a protein shake immediately pre-wo, since the OP mentioned immediately pre and post. I do not take protein immediately pre and would opt for carbs and Aminos if i had to have something real close to starting my workout with protein meal aroun 1.5 hours out.

Truth, I'm thinking how I dose it 45-75 minutes before hand.
