How Much Protein Do You Really Need for Muscle Growth?

Protein intake is an important part of building and maintaining muscle, especially when combined with consistent resistance training.

I’ve been looking into how factors like body weight, training intensity, diet, and overall calorie intake affect protein needs. There are also different ways to reach your daily target, including whole foods and convenient protein supplements.

For those who train regularly, how do you determine your daily protein intake? Do you prefer getting most of it from food, or do you use whey protein to help meet your target?

Ask 10 people you'll get 10 different answers, from my personal experience, you don't need much to get by, but if your goal is to be big muscular and lean, a gram per pound of body weight or slightly more. People who get the majority of their protein from whole foods usually look much better than people who rely on shakes, but if you need a shake or 2 to hit your goal, go for it. When I'm on my A game, I'm eating four to five whole food meals and drinking a shake.

Hitting your overall macros and protein consistently is probably the most important factor.

One thing I've definitely noticed over the years, when I'm on a low carbohydrate diet it's way more important that I hit my protein goals, when my fat intake is low and my carbohydrates are high it doesn't seem nearly as important that I get my exact number, as long as I'm in the ballpark it's fine. Carbohydrates are protein sparing so it makes sense.

I eat 4 meals a day. Each has 40-50g of protein. One of those is my post workout meal which has most of its protein from protein powder. I weigh 185 lbs.
