How Long Are Your Sessions

Curious how long your average session is at the gym. An hour seems really rushed for me, for just about anything. probably 90 minutes is right about ideal, maybe a hair longer if I'm doing some LISS.

But honestly getting warmed up probably takes me a half hour by itself if I'm squatting. (i'm a really bad squatter).

I like to warm up and cool down properly, so that adds some time to my workouts.
Usually its structured like this:
  • 10 minutes on a Elliptical
  • 10-15 minutes of activation and mobility work
  • 60-90 minutes lifting
  • 10 minutes on Elliptical
  • 15-30 minutes mobility work (RomWOD)

I feel my cns can’t handle longer workouts with the intensity I end up lifting at.

10 min warm up(cardio/stretching/mobility)
30 min lifting
15-20 min Liss

Not trying to sound like a badass, if anything I’m annoyed I can’t train longer. I’ve started to focus on pre/intra nutrition, breath-work, less intensity and more mind muscle connection to try to extend my workouts.

I dunno always have a massive pump, covered in sweat, and tired. Everyone’s CNS is different tho. Plus with work, side business and family stressors, I feel like anymore is just taking energy from other places I need to put it.

I totally respect all of that and it's part of why I wanted to see what peoples average was. For me, I feel like I can do high intensity, low volume quicker. But if I'm having a volume day or conditioning day it's longer.
When I was doing competitive CrossFit stuff and shredded, yes 2hrs daily minimum. however my strength plateaued for honestly, years. BUT I was lean and happy with that.

When my sessions are shorter, I can go heavier, do less reps, and get far stronger, but I'm not nearly as lean.

I think I can get stronger, do less reps, go far heavier AND get lean, but I'll have to dedicate additional time to LISS cardio which would basically replace metcons, wods, that type of conditioning work.

About 90 minutes including warmup. Maybe 80 minutes. Might take me 2 hours if it’s a day off from work and I can slow down a bit.

so last night was about a 2hr session for me (roughly). which included 15 minutes on 10 incline treadmill to walk up then very heavy singles day on squats, squats with chains, deadlifts from blocks, and RDL's.

Seemed like I didn't do a "lot" but with the warm up and taking my time it felt like a GREAT session and still took me about 2 hours. I just don't think I can fit everything in with quality at 1 hour.

Ugh, I have to force myself to stay 25-30 mins. I’m trying to move it up to 60 mins but I feel like super setting gets me out the door quickly.

105-120 minutes for me if I’m focused and good about getting **** done, longer when I’m not and am not in a rush. I probably average a bit over two hours

I'm around 90min on average. More when I'm feeling it but there are also times when I get in, get my big lifts done and call it a day in about 30-45min. Sometimes work kicks my teeth in and I'm lucky to get that much done! But hey, 30min is better than 0min.

I would take lower time higher frequency for overall health.

I've actually been considering separating my accessory and compound lifts to their own days and doing ~6 days instead of 3-4. Might be worth trying for a month or two just to see how it makes me feel.

Plus there's the added bonus of getting to hit the weights *almost* everyday!

Would be a cool experiment. Intensity would have to me moderate at that frequency you think?

Yeah, my big concern with it would be overstimulation around elbows and shoulders from them getting hit basically everyday but I think if I got the timing right it might work? Certainly worth a try though. Hell, maybe that's what I'll do when I run this VL msten I'm sitting on! Of course that might obscure the potential benefits that come solely from the change of pace but who cares, gainz iz gainz! 😜

I often have to do this. My sessions are twice as long as yours but when lifting with my wife She can knock out squats, cleans, and deads in the period of time it takes me just to do my squats. (makes sense, her working weight squat is my 2nd warm up set weight). So I may have a week of 3-4 sessions where each sessions is really just super focused on the powerlift of the day, then when I can get in on Saturday or Sunday I can focus on all the accessory work, the bodybuilding stuff, the poptart and fun stuff. Curls for girls, dips, vanity work.

it's actually maybe more fun for me in some ways, and I think less taxing on my CNS

Depends really. Normally around 45-60 mins 6-7 days a week with minimal rest between sets. Now I'm doing a run of Smolov (midway through base meso) and I'm finding it really feels like a deload. Time is no more than 30 minutes with rest between sets and legs trained EOD.

30-45 minutes in and out. BUT, I don't **** around. Never took my phone in there or a workout partner. It's me and 30-45 minutes solid workout, almost like HIIT.

Gonna start Smolov Jr for bench next week. I'm excited!

My workouts are usually about:
10 min general warm up
10 min warm up sets for the first exercise
60-80 min work out (trying to get everything done in 60)
5-10 min cool down/stretching
So that's 85-110 min

so we busted ass for 3 months getting back in shape and ready for the beach this week. CNS got smoked.
We spent between thanksgiving and Christmas doing more LISS cardio and that made our lifting sessions a total of about 2 hours. 40-60 minutes of cardio (1/2 before, 1/2 after lifting) and around 60-70 minutes lifting.

over Christmas break to new years I skipped the cardio and focused only on hard heavy lifting.

when I went into doing a ton of cardio, I felt like I got immediate results for a few weeks. When I dropped it and went straight to hard lifting, I felt like i was getting great results.

I think my plan after this vacation will be a 4 week cycle training the power lifts and using week 4 or 5 as a cardio only deload and see how two cycles like that works. the session are shorter and I feel like that occasional change in direction helps the metabolism a lot.
