fresh veggies v frozen

frozen veggies are A LOT cheaper ... are they that much worse than fresh .. i've usually only eaten fresh (usually 2 bags of spinach throughout the day) but my wallet would love me if i could switch to frozen
thoughts?

Most veggies are frozen fresh. I don't see there being much of a difference between the two. I live in an area where they grow just about everything. They have machines that gather the veggies in the field, wash it, and pack/can it as they are driving down the rows. I think nutrients are lost or changed at certain temps while cooking.

so since i'd have to microwave the frozen veggies would i lose most of the nutrients and veggie goodness?

yeah, i've heard this too. microwaving veggies is supposed to retain more of their nutrients or some ****. i have no backing for this, i just remember reading it in a magazine somewhere.

Some say when you cook veggies, they lose some of their nutrients. However, I read something (can't remember where) that they do not lose any, and the can actually gain nutrients when microwaving.

i heard you lose nutrients when you microwave vegies
i think there have been a few studies to show that alot of the vitamin C content of vegies is destroyed when you nuke them

personally i steam my vegies, i buy them fresh too, because its cheaper, i dont know why its different in america, fresh vegies are about half the price of frozen here

when you cook veggies, it will lose some of it nutrients. when you cook meat it will lose some of its protein. boil milk and you lose all protein in it.

cooking is designed to break large macro-nutritionist down, which is unnecessarily for most veggies.

best thing is to eat raw salad

i dont know about that one, i know cottage cheese is made by boiling milk and adding vinegar, then draining and drying

if i buy spinach that's frozen its 99 cents for the equivalent fresh its more on the order of 5 bucks
this is why i ask

any more opinions
i read what you posted Beelze, but i've heard that it doesn't matter, so i don't know what to believe

Buy the frozen, it still retains all of the nutrients. Instead of cooking it run it under cold/room temp. water until it defrosts.

Fiberous veggies actually release more nutrients when cooked than do raw as your body has a hard time digesting some of them. Just what I have heard.

You can also steam them in your microwave which should retain a lot of the nutrients. Just place tnem in a bowl, and add about a tbsp of water, then cover with plastic wrap, poke a few holes in the top and nuke it.
