Sounds like the button didn't disengage. Try using a spray silcone because it doesn't attract dirt or gum up like wd-40. Work the button back and forth a bit to try to free it up. Also try some compressed air to dislodge any crud stuck in it.
Indeed. Remember what WD40 is...Water Disperser, formula 40. It is not a lubricant nor a substitute for one!
Actually, the main ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil, so it is a lubricant but not a great one for certain things. With fishing reels, what I have found that works best is the spray silicone that drys fast or the teflon spray that also drys fast. The WD-40 stay wet too long and any dust is easily trapped in it and things clog up. Best of luck with your new bait caster R1. Try not to get too many rat's nests! LOL! Setting your drag properly helps with that also.
i ended up getting an abu garcia but anyways, when i press the release button then real, it DOES catch it to pop it back but when reeling it doesnt spin (pull line in)
Is it new or did you get it used? Is the drag adjusted way out? I'd try tightening the drag and if that isn't it, tear it a part and see what's going on inside.
hmmmm... I think I had this happen once before with one of mine but forget what the problem was. Definitely make sure that everything is lined back up when you reassemble it. I'm thinking that either the drag is the whole way out to the point where cranking the handle won't turn the spool, or there's something between the casting button and the gears that isn't engaging. There isn't a free-spool selector on there anywhere, is there? Some reels have it, some don't.

Wait... So you're turning it right now without the handle and star (drag wheel) on it? Me thinkst I found the problem, then! Reassemble the reel. Tighten the drag wheel down, then check to see if it works.
Mechanically speaking, the actions of using a baitcaster are similar to that of a spincast reel, except that you are more in control of the spool, which is horizontal instead of vertical (wrapping around inside like an enclosed spinning reel). You depress the lever, thumb on the line, and make the cast. When the lure hits the water, THUMB THE SPOOL to stop the line from going out or else POOOF!!!! ... bird's nest city. When you begin to reel it back in, the lever will CLICK back up and the gears will engage to retrieve the line. Right now, I think you're in that middle step where it free-spools and the crank isn't there (with drag to keep it tight) to re-engage the gears right.
One other thing... There might be yet another knob on it that tightens the spool itself. The drag provides resistance on the outgoing end, but that knob, screw, adjustment of some sort puts constant pressure on the spool. If that's all the way loose, it could just keep spinning, too.
