Body Builders in the 70's were on roids,Body Builders now are on roids, but for some reason the BB's of the 70's have always stood out to me,they had looked like gods, not just overgrown juice-heads.What do you guys think?:240:

Arnold, Lou ferrigno, Franco Columbu my three favorites

Same here,i think the thing is if you look at the body builders stomachs in the 70's,they were lean with good six packs, now body builders stomachs are real real bloated looking, back then they looked good on stage and at home, now if you see them in the street and your not into body building you would probably think "ooh,he actually thinks he looks good?".Definitely Arnold in my opinion was THE BEST though. He had a personality to compare also.

Frank Zane + Arnold > Todays Belgian Blue Bull lookalike bodybuilders.

They're still awesome, just not in the same way.

Agreed. Arnold will always be the best in my eyes. No matter who is bigger, no matter who is leaner...Arnold is the man

Far out man(hippie talk). He probably broke your ****ing back lol.Is he still in shape?

(this was about 5 years ago) and yes he was in great shape for some one who was in 60s, he still works out, solid guy inside and out, really nice guy no bs and knows his $*** very well, hes Arnolds best friend, his office has books and the coffee table written by Arnold and some of his books as well, missing california now.

I also think the Body Builders in the 70's are great examples of how roids wont ****ing kill you like some say if you dont run support supps or PCT.NO Body Builder then ran Support's or PCT,most of them are fine to this day, yes,Arnold has had Heart surgery but thats because he was born with a bicuspid aortic valve(a heart condition).

you know, your right bro lol it makes you wonder how the hell did they do it

It was a more "pure" form of body building back then - they were trying to achieve the perfect example of male physique.

Somewhere around Lee Priest - maybe earlier as I wasn't paying attention - the emphasis left balance and symmetry and shifted to freakish hypertrophy.

Agree with the comments about roids and pct - they didn't do pct's but I think they would if they had the knowledge we have today. I didn't do juice back then - but had some buds who did and, seriously - no woman on a hormonal tirade is worse than those guys were when they went off cycle. I mean they were miserable - and it took every ounce of effort they had to get into the gym every day to keep their gains up - and they still lost a lot of gains.

But the amazing thing is - most of those old body builders are still around and still look great for their age - and they're still active and healthy. Off hand - I can't think of a single one that had serious problems with their health.

Exactly, none of them have health problems now(not that i keep up with every bb from the 70's lol).EVERYTIME when im in a dispute about roids back in the day and those people being fine to this day, someone ALWAYS has to say "well Arnold had to have heart surgery because of it",if those people would have studied up on it,they would have know Arnold was born with a Heart problem.:rant2:

Bodybuilding now is more of a freak show now as opposed to then. I would LOVE to look like any of those guys. Big and ripped. Arnold, Mike Katz, Lou, Frank Zane etc all looked like gods.

I still love bodybuilding and always will but the guys of today I would never want to look like. Just too damn big and bloated.

Altho I do have a mancrush on Branch and the way he lifts...would love to see him compete in that day and age.

I think they use to stop training in the off season, and be off of the drugs. In those days they only trained for a couple of pro shows a year. Because of muscle memory and steroids, they always managed to be able to bounce back to train before a competition and get back to old form. They didn't PCT. Nowadays everybody wants to stay in top form all year and the competition is fiercer. Many are blasting and cruising. And the blasting is way more than what bodybuilders would have done in the 70s. Look how small/average Arnold looks in this off season color picture and compare it to his Mr Olympia training photos.

Wow, i was just watching hercules in NY (horrible movie) and was thinking of starting a thread just like this. Man arnold looked like the god he was playing. Perfectly proportional and huge. The jay cutlers and ronnie colmans of today do not have me jealous at all. I see more veins than muscle and their abs just look like a muscle mess of ground beef. Plus all the fake tan is ridiculous

The bodybuilders of today just look like freaks, sad thing is the supplements, training and performance enhancers will just get better with technology and you will probably see 350lbers with 4% bodyfat quicker then you would think.

I agree with time and technology they will only become bigger!!!

Definitely prefer old school. Those guys looked like body sculptors compared to today's mass monsters. However, I still think it's amazing what today's pros are doing. Today's pros are pushing the envelope every year and not everyone can do what they're doing.

Yeh you don't see young ones idolizing bodybuilders like they did when I was a kid. Arnold and the rest of them were like Greek gods to me growing up, and they were superhuman to many of us.

Aesthetics is always more important than mass to me, having a perfectly proportioned physique will drop more panties than being a massive beast.

Serge nubret - No.1 physique IMO, should of beaten Arnold.

His chest and arms were sick but his abdominal symmetry was F**ked up! No way he was taking anything from Arnold.

Its funny, if you look at Arnold when he won the Olympia,

compared to Jay Cutler when he won the Olympia,

and Jay looks like Arnold on Steroids.

Yeah the 70's bodybuilders like Robby Robertson, Mike Mentzer, Boyer Coe used to work hard for their gains. No heavy Insulin and HGH like they have today.

funny though because you have people out there (even on these boards) who use HGH and slin with tons of anabolics and arent anywhere close to the level the 70s guys were at

Think of it in the terms of a "great movie"; the sequel is never as great as the original and never can be because it was the first; it was new, and it got your attention. I respect the new generation, but having grown up on the 70's and 80's, all your original greats, will always be the "Greatest".

Arnold- bodybuilding
Ruth - baseball
Ali- boxing
Armstrong- cycling
Brown- football
Etc, etc, etc

even with tons of gear most people just don't have the genetic ceiling of ifbb pros.

frank zane hands down is the most ideal physique in my opinion. most aesthetic physique i've ever seen.

Zane was symmetrical, Franco is short but in proportion too, all the old schoolers had that sort of finish to their physique.

Both are good, I like some of the bodybuilders nowadays more though. Dexter Jackson and the animal pak guy come to mind.

I think part of the fan appreciation for the body builders of the 70's is that their physiques seemed obtainable to the average joe starting out or aspiring. The guys nowadays do not seem even human at times, and certainly not an obtainable physique for 99% of us.

Out of the current BB'ers, I think Layne Norton has a phenomenal build, especially for being natural + he seems like a real cool guy. Can't wait till I get his DVD.

Well I think they just had more common sense back then. Plus a lot of those guys back then are still in great shape today. Hmmm, I'd like to see Ronnie Coleman or Jay Cutler in 20 years....These current guys are so big and unhealthy I don't think they will be around for a long time....

Really? he has a weird build and there are a lot of other naturals that look better. I will say that his intensity and strength in the gym is insane!

Yea,no doubt the Gods of 70's worked there asses off.I also liked that they had a head full of hair.My hair is almost shoulder length and naturally wavy,so **** everybody who looks and me and thinks i need a shaved head to go with a built body.:unitedstates:

I like Lou ferrigno and Arnold. But you got to give the new bbers credit they are some monsters. But yea I wouldn't want to get that big.

Nice analogy. These guys are the "originals" and the sequels never are the same.

If it weren't for Arnold, I never would have lifted a weight...

Frank Zane was a ripped mofo but I prefer Ken Waller's physique in Pumping Iron. I strive for that proportion, symmetry and size.

This^^.

great stuff in this thread fellas.I agree serigo was a beast as well I think he should have beat arnold a few times

Dave Draper one of the best physics of all time, back like a mountain range.
I love working back, although it is not a 'mirror' body part, i think good solid wide back development can separate you cosmetically.

what a great thread i truly am inspired by all the old school dudes, i used to think as a kid if i could flare my lats like franco and revees, middle back delt tie in like draper, thick bis like larry scott, square pecs like arnold, waist to chest ratio of nubret, leg and ab detial like zane...etc

those guys are truly demi-gods!

Dave was definitely another example of BBing awesomeness, just took him a ittle longer to get his ab and dieting game down. Check him out now, dude is still JACKED!!

HAHA,well i'll be damned,a 60 year old who has a better bench then me,HOORAH!

well i had some good comparison shots of Arnold and Jay Cutler but apparently i need 50 posts to put them up, maybe someone else can help me out with some pics?

really who would you rather look like? and who do you think the ladies would rather have? to me arnold looks like perfection, while jay looks like a freak, i can never get over the fake tan. i thought body building was about the perfect body and symmetry (i don't consider those skinny model guys perfect, anyone can starve themselves)
