Computer Help: Creating a "Release Folder" for a .dll

Background:

I reformatted my high tech Windows ME computer :D I tried to install my ME friendly version of Limewire which will not run because java wasn't functioning. An ME friendly version of Java will not complete installation since Windows Installer is not updated. So I downloaded an ME friendly version of installer and THAT installation would not complete because NTDLL.dll was not found on my computer.

BTW, I constantly say "ME friendly" to illustrate that I realize newer software isn't always appropriate for an older OS.

If you're still following, I appreciate it :wave2: So I downloaded NTDLL.dll and put it in windows/system32 which is where it's supposed to be. I tried the Windows Installer installation once again, but still got the "ntdll.dll missing" error message.

The current problem:

I tried to use RUN to install/apply the NTDLL.dll file. But, apparently that's not possible until I create a RELEASE FOLDER for NTDLL.dll

Any info would be appreciated. Btw, I've never used VB so I might be in for a long difficult journey with this one

I hear that ALL THE TIME! lol  The catch is that it came with a factory restore disc, so I wipe the whole thing out every 6 months and it absolutely flies once I finish the restore. I keep my programs to a minimum, defrag all the time, and it runs better than 2g xp at work.

Oh and I figured out the problem. I'm sure you'll believe that I found that Windows update is what caused the dll errors. I'm running on all cylinders again :head:

almost forgot, 256 ram Athlon, and all the hardware except for the dvd burner is orignal :D

To be honest, I know that everyone hates winME but I rarely ever have any problems with it. This might be the second time in the last 7 or 8 years that I've ever even had to trouble shoot.

I really appreciate your offer. But I've went through installing different operating systems on this old clunker and it's a royal PITA! So I'll graciously decline as I'm sure you could understand :D

Try using regsvr32 to register the DLL.

you are SO on the right track. That's the point where it just wouldn't run the dll and troubleshooting was suggesting this mystery release folder. Luckily, I solved the problem with another reinstall without letting microsoft meddle with my system files through supposedly "critical" updates.

Again I stress luckily since I saw some examples of how to create a release folder and it looked like a miserable process through VB.

Ouch Bro...

Or you could upgrade to Linux Ubuntu?? Windows 7RC should handle it. I'm using it on an old School HP Pavilion DV2000... Runs faster than any OS out there and I run Ubuntu, Windows Xp, Vist, 7 Beta and RC, and Mac OSX.

The problems with ME were a bit exaggerated, if it runs for you kool. I have never hear of this problem tho... Dadams seems to have it.

-I'm a Hardware guy, sounds to me like this is more software development, right?

Ya, it's definately a software issue. The ntdll.dll was SUPPOSED to be in windows/system32 but I ended up finding it in windows/system after a reinstall. Now if I run windows update, the file disappears.

Effing shady, right? boy oh boy, I should throw my computer in the garbage and buy a new shiny microsoft box since mine is too old now right? :dunno: Microsoft, we're on to you at AM :head:

Corrupt install is my best bet. Try Re formating and reinstalling before you toss it in the can. If you boot up to the install screen you should be able to get to the repair Command Line and Fdisk the HDD? I have never installed ME before so im not sure but that is the norm with windows installs.

Or, pick up a new Windows Box. ME is like 9 years old lol

I think the repair command line was introduced in XP.. but it has a DOS subsystem anyway... boot disk, fdisk, wipe, reinstall. ****... Torrent Win98.. that is 10x better than ME.

TPB sounds like your best bet.

I'm almost positive that it was just a bad install.

hmm, any reason why the dll would come up missing in an install 3 times and then suddenly show up? I'm convinced the problem occured in the WindowsUpdate

I though Windows ME was end of life a LONG time ago.. i am surprised you can even get updates via windows update.

Even if i has installed properly before, IT could still have written wrong to the hard drive or something. its an old OS and the code wasn't amazing. Lots of people had issues with the install. Wouldn't surprise me that you got a bad install.

Windows would keep the old updates that they had, but nothing new would have been added as in service packs and stuff since XP

yup, this is correct. I decided not to run any of the updates at all this time. I DL'd an ME friendly version of firefox too and it's running better than the most updated versions of IE (well I could only get up to 6 to work, so I guess that's not all that impressive of a version anyway).

So my computer now consists of Xcel for workout spreadsheets, firefox for AM :D , utorrent for movies, and limewire for mp3's :head: I'm satisfied!

I'm not a fan of fedora on big desktops or Workstatios (Powerful laptops)

But linux found gold with the Netbook, eepc thing. Esp fedora and another flavor i can't remember. I would fully convert the Desktop to Ubuntu if it wasn't for my ipod touch not being able to sync with ubuntu

My goal actually is the ultimate deployment comp. small, portable, fedora is a solid linux build, i can virtualize xp, use open source programs like open office/neo office, gimp, miro, vlc, filezilla, 7 zip, clam win, win pooch, just to name a few. Easily done. Then store all my porn, movies, music etc on my WD passport (usb powered) and I'm ready to kill boredom dead.

Very true, and it will work. Fedora is good, i just never liked it. Or mandriva. I prefer Ubuntu Or Newb linux. I have used Fedora Mandriva 08' and Freespire )which blows, but has really good battery life).

Being a Computer Networker, the More OS's i have at my disposal the more XP i have. Meaning the more money i can bring it. I love my Windows 7RC beta tho...

-I also dislike virtual machines.... lol so slow

Ya, that last reinstall without running windows update did the trick.

That's good to know bout openoffice. Fortunately I have a "real" copy of office2000 (not sure how I aquired that, probably in college???). And I have a not so kosher copy of powerpoint, but I doubt I'll even install that.

I'm sure at some point I'll be purchasing a new machine. I'll probably run through some cnet reviews when it's time and then get opinions on here since I now know that you guys are WAAAY more knowledgable than me on this topic :D

Latest windows server install = best operating system I have used to date.

And that's with me running Win7, XP, and different flavors of linux on various boxes I have laying around.

Just reformat. Things are only going to get more complicated once Win7 gets released.
