College Football 2008 season

J, did you see a recent pic of ray lewis? He looks like a fat azz of his former self. I agree that nfl coordinated defenses are a different breed, but let's keep the playing field and opinions open here.

I understand the transition to the professional level on all accounts, but people often don't take into consideration the truly unique players in that arguement.

I do believe tebow is unique j, in all facets of the game. I'm fairly confident a 6'3" 230lb guy will do just fine in the nfl pain game. Talent only takes you so far......heart is what separates players from the rest in the end.

How many NFL hopefuls have we witnessed be busts in recent times? A whole sh*tload, j. Until a player demonstrates his ability at the next level, it's nothing more than pure speculation. I know you can agree to that. How many people have we witnessed come out of the blue to attain rockstar status in the nfl.....how about matt cassell this year? Pretty damn impressive. You know i love my pats as well, haha. ;)

J, many college teams have put out players that were destined to be superstars, and some that weren't supposed to be anything that proved them all wrong. Let the kid prove himself before labeling him anything. He's proved more than enough that he's a stud at the college level. His stats and accomplishments speak for themselves. If he fails, he fails. However, the kid has more going for him in general than most college athletes at this level overall.

Let him prove himself....

I'll give the guy a chance. Honestly. I have nothing against him other than he's a Gator.

He's got 2 things against him - Gators don't really translate well and Meyer's one QB - Alex Smith - was blah.

Now that doesn't mean anything to Tebow per se. Miami kids do translate well, but we have busts also (see Yatil Green).

I think it will hurt his draft status (just as teams take Miami kids because of the history).

Yeah I've seen Ray. He's still good, not what he once was. But he's going on 14 years in the NFL.
Still a Hall of Famer on the field.

I can see the comparison with McNabb, but tebow runs a HELL of a lot better than donovan ever did. :) Tebow will do just fine in the nfl.

Stafford is NOT what people say he is, i agree with everything you've said. Their running game opened up the pass attack on many fronts, and he still was garbage in the end. I do think moreno is a hell of a back, and he'll do well at the nfl level.

agreed...

Stafford hasn't had half the college career of Matt Ryan or JaMarcus Russell... and somehow he's getting the #1 status? Although this year for QBs might be worse than the Alex Smith, Aaron Rodgers draft.

I think smart franchises will steer clear of him though. They are lower in the draft just that reason. He's nobody the fans are going to get excited about either. Best case scenario for him is backing up Dan Orlovsky/Daunte Culpepper and Drew Stanton next year.

To be fair, Georgia never does anything close to overachieve on offense so it might partly Mark Richt's fault. Richt is a great guy though, so no one will blame him.

To be fair - I think LSU should be somewhat of a case study for you. They got complacent this year, weren't hungry.

They sucked it up the whole season. Yet you saw against GT that they were a good team. They just didn't want it.

It's hard to keep rolling every game when you've been on top the year before. I think Miami in '02 was afflicted by that to a fair degree, though we were robbed by Terry Porter's bogus PI call.

Really hard to climb that mountain.

And I think Harvin and Spikes are gone.

We'll know by thursday if they are, but i'm not set that they're gone yet. Harvin maybe though...The kid is freakin' unreal!

I know when you're king of the hill it's hard to stay hungry, histroy has taught that lesson in every sport and level. It's just impressive at the college level to do that 2 out of 3 years. Any team that accomplishes a simialr feat is very commendable.

LSU was good, but lacked any kind of stimulus on offense. Their year long QB issue destroyed that team in the end. Continuity is the key to success at any level of the game.

BTW - When you guys play USF, let me know. I'm only 15 minutes away from the stadium (raymond james).....you better get down here for that game. ;) I'm applying to UF for my nurse practitoner, but USF isn't out of the picture either because it would be WAY easier for me and the wife overall.......However, i'll be wearing my gator colors to class at ALL times! :head:

I'm sending you a gator t-shirt for your next birthday! haha ;)

Maybe tebow will somehow be a patriot oneday...oh man, but i can wish upon a star, haha.

I think Harvin gone, Spikes stays.

Spikes would be considered the 3rd best MLB I believe. Maualuga, Laurinities, and talk of fitting Brian Orakpo in there in a 3-4.

Forgotten is the guy Spikes replaced at UF. Brandon Siler, he was cool as hell to me and supposedly all his teammates told scouts to stay far far away from him. Even guys like Chris Leak and Dallas Baker were supposedly in on it too. Siler leaves, drops to the 7th round when he was the 2nd best MLB behind Patrick Willis. All he ever does is make plays. Last night he kept Pittsburgh out of the endzone on 4th and goal from the 1 inch line. He saved the Gators season against LSU causing Ja.Russell to fumble on the 1 inch line. oh well thats my shout out to him his day is coming

Play at USF next year. In November. May be Thanksgiving weekend actually.

I'm planning to go at this point.
Mom, brother and I got season tix at Busch Gardens. Went on Christmas Day this year (THAT was a lot of fun).
So may hit that up also.

Not sure what other Cane games I'ma go to. Maybe Tally-wacker. Though I heard word they may put Miami-FSU back on Labor Day night (BOOOOOO!!!!!!).
(Of the ACC bowl games - ours was the 2nd highest rated of the non-BCS, meaning 3rd highest rated overall. Even when we are bad - people watch.)

We do have OU at Miami early in the season. I hope Bradford leaves - might give Miami a fighting chance. (Same goes for Gresham.)

Seriously man, let me know if you do hit up the USF game. I have season tix to busch gardens as well......love it! ;)

I hate the Stafford logic. He sucks. He'll sleep with Kiper and be a top 5 pick. He had a ton of talent him at UGA and never threw for more than 2TDs until his final game (i think). Stafford will then get a pass because he'll end up on a shitty team like JaMarcus Russell did. Seriously, the UGA wideouts would face single coverage because of their running game and Stafford still couldn't do anything except throw an amazing pass nowhere near his receivers.

I don't know that Tebow is like Vick though, Tebow is probably a better version of Alex Smith (who was the 1st pick though). Tebow's speed and moves are more like Donovan McNabb (3-4 years ago) I think. Bradford is legit, I like Cantwell of Louisville, McCoy is good, Sanchez is really good. I think Tebow is a safe pick, I would rather have him as a backup/hback QB than draft a project or hit-or-miss like Nate Davis or Graham Harrell

Huh??

First off, Stafford threw 5 touchdown passes in one game this season, tying UGA's school record. He also broke the school's single season record on touchdown passes. And he's now second in the all time passing records at UGA.

And he did it against SEC defenses.

The offensive line for UGA was rattled with injuries all season long, damn near exhausting the depth chart. Many times, he was running for his life and still made incredible throws.

Nobody in college ball has an arm quite like him. It's not his fault that the offensive line wasn't ever what it should have been and his receivers weren't able to handle his passes many times (yes, they were dropped pretty frequently).

There's a reason he's going in the first round- he stood out in the best conference in the land. He's got pure passing talent that nobody else, save Bradford, can match.

I knew you'd show up shortly, haha. ;)

I cant see Tebow being all that great at the next level...his arm just doesnt have it imo. Great college qb but pro...not so much.

All this is fair. I don't think he's lived up to this #1A QB stuff that Kyper/McShay are throwing around.

Maybe I'm just reflecting that it's really UGa themselves that haven't lived up to pre-season expectations since Hershel Walker (not downing them - I'm serious).

In the end with QB, it's prob. the hardest position to say who translates well and who doesn't.
I didn't in any way think Matt Ryan would do as well as he did this year.

I agree, what a year he had as a rookie as well. I knew he was good, but he's better than i had thought after watching some of his games this year.

Joe Flacco is pretty damn good as well. I swear he never gets excited or flustered during a game.

You're definitely right on about them not living up to expectations. They are usually loaded with talent, but can't ever quite seem to get it done when it matters most. Perhaps THE most underperforming program of the past two decades.

Put it another way-

Give Stafford Oklahoma's offensive line and the Big 12's defense in general, he'd more than likely have Bradford's numbers and then some.

So some honest surprises to me as to whom turned pro today:
Sam Bradford and Jermaine Gresham stayed. Did not expect that as both were bona fide 1st round picks.

Yeah, I was surprised by that as well. It's great for college football though, so I'm not going to complain.

I miss it already! :borladuck:

Here's something to cheer us all up ----> :boobies:

This is the first time I've been back since the big game...so first of all, Go Gators :wavey:. I went down to Miami and ended up going to the game as well. It was unreal.

Second, per a source of mine at the school, Percy Harvin is apparently headed to the NFL. My favorite Gator of all time, and he'll undoubtedly do big things at the next level. Hard to believe he had 170 yards in the BCS Champ game ON A BROKEN ANKLE. I'm happy for the guy....I say go get paid.

Great to hear you went down to the game, brother! A few of my friends did and said it was amazing.

It will be sad to see percy go, but that kid has unreal talent, and will be quite an asset to whoever picks him up. Even though he most definitely won't be a patriot (although they like gator receivers - Jackson, Caldwell, and Gaffney), i'll cheer him on wherever he ends up.

I'm very glad to hear that tebow is staying. I think in his senior season he'll gain some valueable experiences overall, and have time to work on some things mechanically. How about another National Championship for the U of F! He'll be NFL bound next year for certain.

Thanks bro (I need to rep others so I can hit you back!).

Yeah, Percy was an incredible talent. All he ever did was average 10 yards a touch. It's hard to believe he had 1300 yards and 17 TD's even for how we spread it around (5 players rushing for over 500 yards this season).

Our defense is primed and ready for another run at it, that's for sure. I think our defense only gets better...

I agree, and sources have said that brandon spikes is staying.....so that would mean everyone on defense for the most part returns. How about those goal line defensive stands the gators dished out? :rambo:

My dude, our defense is going to be ridiculous. Cunningham is staying as well, supposedly. We'll be returning all 11 starters.

FSU Sanctions on the horizon. A Nole buddy of mine passed this along to me. It's not looking good for the Noles. This is what I had predicted a few months ago....this all goes back to the online course cheating from about a year or so ago:

EVERYBODY back. Anchored by the returning Spikes. It is ridiculous.

All the talking heads are saying Florida is the obvious 2009 pre-season # 1.

Doom??

When was the last team to go pole to pole #1??

USC in '04 was #1 in the AP the whole season.
I think FSU in '99 was the prior one.

Stupid pollsters had Gators #1 in '01. Saw how that worked out.

Good call. Found this on Wiki:
USC was the second team in NCAA football history to have gone wire-to-wire (ranked first place from preseason to postseason since the AP began releasing preseason rankings); the first was Florida State in 1999 (three other schools went wire-to-wire before the existence of preseason polls - Notre Dame in 1943, Army in 1945 and USC in 1972).

Still means 98% who are ranked #1 PreSeason don't end up that way, which is why I am nervous about Gators starting #1 next year. Superstitious.

That's fair. I mean I think '01 was the last time you guys started pre-season #1. That didn't work out well (that wasn't Zook either brahs).

I can't remember anyone beyond FSU in '99 that did it in the coaches poll. I'll have to search - I just remembered SC in '04.

You've been rather mum about florida since they won the NC, J. ;)

I personally don't like the idea of starting #1 in the preseason poll, but i think the team they will have certainly deserves it. We'll see how it plays out, anything is possible. :stooges:

Losing Harvin hurts. Still have Tebow.

I think the biggest thing is the hunger factor. Going 9-4 and getting beaten by Michigan brings about a big dose of hunger to win.

Winning the national title, well, doesn't.

UF deserves to be #1.

I will be at UF-LSU in Death Valley. My LSU friends want me to go because I hate UF as much or more than anyone. Hahaha.

Lol - I know.

That's always a good game every year, so it shouldn't disappoint.

Tebow has one more goal he has burned in his heart - that a UF team goes undefeated for the first time ever (actually his goal this year).

When he's motivated - well we know the rest...

So I wouldn't say motivation will be a big problem for the '09 Gators.

I agree. A kid like tebow finds inspiration somewhere to win every week. He truly is a unique player that adds more to that team than many people think. I think he wants an undefeated season more than ever now.

With the entire defensive core returning, and the offense still looking very potent all around, they're going to make a run at glory in '09. While it can be tough to stay hungry when you're living at the top, however tebow isn't your ordinary king overseeing that position either.

GO GATORS '09!!!

Hate to break it to you Gators, though, but you play in the SEC.

If you want undefeated, think about transferring temporarily to the Big Ten, Mountain West, Big 12, etc.

;)

Lol - I agree, it's a very tough feat to accomplish in a bruiser conference like the SEC. Never say never, though.

I'm DEFINITELY going to the UF/UGA game later this year tony, woot!

Did you see their '09 schedule???
Besides a potentially tough game at LSU, the Gators '09 schedule is one of it's "less challenging" in many years + 3 creampuffs instead of usual 1 or 2 - Troy, Florida International and Charlestown Southern (Charlestown Southern??).

Cuts both ways. Because their SOS ranking will be a lot lower than the last few years, one loss will definitely keep them out of NCG IMO. So I think they HAVE to go undefeated if they want another crack at NCG. Perhaps another motivating factor?

Damn, Trauma, did you have to change your avatar?
Very distracting.

Hey Trauma, you started this thread last year. Won't be much left on it now but us "winners" LOL.

When you start one for "College Football 2009" please give me a heads up!

Man, I really think we could go 3 BCS Championships in 4 years! That would be sick.
Already preseason #1.

GO GATORS!

My favorite....

Major Wright says hello to OU.
2nd pass play of game. Wonder why the OU receivers were looking over their shoulders the rest of the way??

I was there. Best hit of the game IMO...

The most explosive player in Gator football history, that's for sure! 12 yards per touch over his Gator career.

Interesting side note on Harvin this season (jmh will enjoy this one...:sgrin:) :

Percy Harvin had more yards in 2 games (Ole Miss and UGA for example), than the leading WR did for Miami for the ENTIRE season. :boobies:

Bama with the late surge to take their second consecutive national recruiting title! Trent Richardson running behind D.J. Fluker ftw!!! Roll Tide!
