College Football 2008 season

I posted earlier in this thread about the fact that the Elfin Eleven's commissioner, along with the ADs from schools like Ohio State, are responsible for the BCS's current form. They completely oppose a conference championship or a playoff system, because it would basically eliminate their chances of having a team in the big game.

Meanwhile, the SEC and Big 12, hands down the two best conferences in college ball, both play a conference championship and are pro-playoff.

To me, that says it all.

Oh, and who won the last three BCS championships, and four out of the last five? You got it... teams from the SEC and Big 12.

I'd agree the Rose Bowl conferences are definitely in the way. I blame them for a big part.

But I just honestly wonder if there aren't a lot of fat cats in the other big conferences that are against change because they view their livelihood's to be possibly altered too much.

Think about this - why would the SEC and Big 12 on form and current history want to change? They are winning like gangbusters as far as the MNC's.

That said - I would think both conferences would welcome the challenge of a playoff system. I just wonder if that's true for all the decision makers - just a hunch I have, nothing fact or rumor based behind that.

Perhaps I'm just skeptical we'll have a playoff in the next decade...

I get what you're sayin'. I think that the SEC and Big 12 are more open to a new system because they each usually have 4 or 5 legitimate contenders. Statistically, their chances are good... and these two conferences cover the football heartland of America. The talent and intensity isn't going anywhere. I'd include the rest of the Florida teams as well.

When it really gets down to it... it's all about $$$. I think the bigger bowls are afraid they'd lose a lot of cash if they switch to a playoff system. Instead of flat-out admitting that, they usually revert to using words like "tradition."

Jim Delany, commish of the Big 10, has said that as long as he remains commish, there will NEVER be a Big 10 Playoff and there's no chance of any kind of playoff in College Football. Never mind the fact that a playoff is used in Division I-AA, Division II and Division III, not to mention EVERY OTHER SPORT SANCTIONED BY THE NCAA.

I pulled this from an article from 2 years ago : Delany said revenue from college football has grown to $900 million from $200 million since the 90's; average attendance for Big Ten games has increased to 71,000 from 58,000 over that same period...

Simply put, Delany doesn't want to mess with the $$$ that's coming in.

Josh Peter from Rivals/Yahoo :

For those who expect Delany to cave in to public pressure anytime soon, he cites an important aspect of the latest contract he helped broker between the Rose Bowl and ABC that officially begins this year.

"We have an eight-year agreement with ABC in the Rose Bowl," he said. "So that speaks for itself."

That will give Delany, the Pac-10 and the Rose Bowl leverage to fight any move toward a playoff until 2014.

Dude - re: the Beaver Stadium at night comment, seriously. I heard all that crap back in 2001 - not to mention adding Adam Telefario running with the team out for the first time since he broke his neck.

You know what happened when we showed up.

I like parts of your team this year, but that stadium isn't bullet proof for you guys.

About that Linebacker U stuff - who's done jack sh*t in the NFL in the last 10 or 15 years from Penn State??
Back when Shane Colon was around - yeah, I'd give you guys that.
But seriously - I don't see why that title should remain since about 1990. Prove me wrong, broski.
what about Lavar Arrington (wash/giants)..paul posluzny(buff) this year...good season so far for him

In the tradition of Cornelius Bennett and Derrick Thomas (RIP), Alabama recently produced All-American Demeco Ryans. After being selected in the second round of the draft (a steal compared to what his team payed for Mario Williams), he was named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2006, and then selected to the Pro Bowl in 2007. Very underrated LB.

Just saw a Gameday sign in Columbus that said: "Helen Keller is Lou Holtz's translator."

I think the top 3 are gonna have their hands full today. Oklahoma State just might give Texas a challenge. Columbus, OH has not been a happy place for Penn State in recent years, nor has Knoxville for Alabama. Tennessee can save Phil Fulmer's job today if Bama's offense continues to struggle, and I'm a bit concerned about the absence of Terrence "Mount" Cody on the D-line.

My biggest concern today though is... lager or ale?

god what a game

I said that Oklahoma State would give them a game. McCoy's numbers were just INSANE though.

I hope the Cowboys don't drop too far in the rankings. They shouldn't. I still think they're better than Texas Tech. I'm not saying that Tech isn't capable of pulling a major upset next week... but they won't run the table against Texas, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma.

Serious offense this week in college football.

What an absolute feeding frenzy in the swamp. Glad i was part of it!!! GO GATORS!!!!!

just throwing this out there......Duke, yes ****ing Duke beat Vandy 10-7. Now, Vandy has beat S. Carolina which was #24 at the time and Auburn which was #13. This being a mostly SEC thread, just wanted to let you know. Maybe you guys aren't that great. J/K.........I'm done, going to watch Tenn. upset Alabama. Actually, I have to flip back and forth b/t that and Ohio State/penn state. plenny, hope you have your jock strap on boy.

Soon to be gator bait.......;)

Trauma, maybe, just maybe we can pull it off this year against you. Our defense hasn't been up to par the past two games, and your ****ing offense is scary. that being said, with how young we are this year on offense, I'm going to own your ass next year. :djparty:

What conference is Duke's coach from?

we're working on it. you know you are gettin scarred, fsu offense bringing it; defense there......come on, its in the back of your mind the way we keep winning??????

You have to admit, that pic is freakin' hillarious!

Canes beat a well coached Wake Forest team today and continue to very much be a 2nd half team. (Down 10-3 at the half and then win 16-10.)

Need to better game plan ahead of the game, but the staff has shown they can adjust at half time.

I have no idea whom our best QB is. We continue to play the hot hand. Last week it was Jacory Harris putting up 49 on Duke and this week it was Robert Marve throwing a magnificant 30 yard out in the pouring rain to Theron Collier to seal the win late in the 4th Q.

Being that both QB's are fresman - no way both stay. Someone is going to transfer. I'm concerned about that just because we have no one we are targeting in the '09 recruiting class because who wants to come play behind 2 freshman Florida players of the year?
May be that we don't get a big time QB until '10, which would make our depth at QB next year (if one transfers this off season) really really really bad.

Other than that - the ACC is so level that it's hilarious. UVa and FSU are leading the conference but really only 3 teams are out of it, Duke Clemson and NC State. On our half - everyone has 2 or 3 losses overall.

I've never seen a conference with such parity in my 20-whatever years of watching college football.

I'm very impressed with UF's play at the current. Special teams was unreal today blocking 2 punts, and a field goal. The secondary has improved leaps and bounds over last year. Major wright adding a solid cap to that much improved secondary.

What else can you say about Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey? The kids are good, real good. They have some serious speed and confidence. I was sitting right down on the sideline in the north endzone where he caught that 61 yard TD reception. I had a great time at the game today!!

Tebow ran up to the north endzone a few times where i was sitting and giving high fives to the crowd. It's amazing how much bigger tebow looks in person. The kid has some massive quads/hammy's! I have a good pic from the game that i'll post up later.

Florida really looks to be finding their groove at this point. They're spreading the ball around, and using a solid pass/run attack. I'd like to see tebow be a bit more confident in his long throws however. I still think at times he doubts his ability with the long ball. He has had quite a few underthrown passes this year, but the last 2 weeks he's looked much better.

This UF/UGA game is really shaping up to be something special. I'm off all weekend, so it's GAME ON!!!!!

GO GATORS!!!!! CHOMP, CHOMP, CHOMP!!!

So congrats plenny. Your slow-ass Penn State team scraped by in their only challenge (and I use that term loosely) of the year. Please stop comparing their offense to the likes of other top 5 teams though. They're sedate. And don't say it was due to OSU's awesome defense, 'cause that same defense couldn't contain USC at all.

I'll go ahead and say it: Penn State WILL play in the BCS Championship Game. It's a done deal. Their last game is on Nov. 22, and then they'll have the luxury of sitting back while the SEC and Big 12 beat each other up. Six weeks later, the Big Ten cha(u)mps will be destroyed by a legitimate contender. Same ol', same ol'.

Yay BCS!

Well, Alabama and FSU have the most freshman seeing playing time this season... and they're a combined 14-1.

Must be the coaching, huh?

Canes have the most TD's scored by frosh.

I knoes stats brah. ;)

Don't even insinuate the Nole coaches are better than anyone. I mean really. I understand trying to stir the pot, but the 18 executive/assistant/king of the Porta John guys that they have doesn't mean they are the crown princes of England.

The talent that took one of the shittest teams in college football (Duke) to beat a team that had all the bull **** hype that goes with the sec(Vandy).

I just complimented your team... and you go there huh? :D

Look, it wasn't too long ago that Vanderbilt was regarded as lightly as Duke prior to this year. They used to be other SEC teams' Homecoming game. The SEC is having a "down" year... and they still have three legitimate contenders in the top 10. The ACC... not so much.

It's complete horsesh*t that a team like PSU will play in the national championship when they would clearly get man- handled by a good majority of the SEC. What a joke the BCS is.

I agree with you rub, nothing impressive in anyway from the PSU/OSU game. Both teams looked completely and utterly lethargic on offense. But wait, it must have been the defense.........

cough...cough...cough!!!! oh..excuse me....i busted my jock strap in the 4 th quarter when penn state knocked the ball out of pryor's hand and recovered it. the game changing play. with all due respect, i wanted ohio st to go into ot with penn state. this game brought a tear to my eye..for real..a classic big10 or elfin 11 match up like you guys call it....2 teams playing hardcoe defense, and 1 play made the whole game. kudos to ohio st.....great d-fence. if this ohio team played usc now..the outcome would have been different..maybe a win maybe a close game...but penn st. won on hostile territory..and had a quarterback switch in the 4th quarter probably to throw the ohio st def. off but it seemed like d-clark was pis$ed,,can u blame him, he's gone this far to have a back up score a td for penn st. what a twist....again ,,a classic big 10 game i havent seen in a long time....love ya lions.:djparty:

So, what's your excuse for Miami then? You talk all that smack about FSU... so what's the deal with the Canes? Your coach has had as much time as Urban Meyer or Nick Saban had, and they play in a much weaker conference. The results: They are 10-10 in the last two seasons and the worst major team in their own state.

Humor me.

Brah, broski, bro, bra, etc.

if y'all havent noticed...i didnt talk any sh#t about ohio st all week long...i knew it would be tough...........but it came down to lack of mistakes. fortunately, psu has a easier sch. the rest of the way compared to alabama/texas......do i smell nat'l championship????? we'll see.

plenny, you're a great supporter of your team. I'm not hating on you (really), but I'm going to be depressed if PSU plays 11 games, sits at home for 6 weeks, and then gets annihilated by Texas, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, or USC. Of course, if Bama makes it through... then God bless Penn State!

you are down right brutal!!!!!!!!!!:dl:

I've forgotten more about college football than you currently know. If you wanna get into a pissing contest about knowledge pertaining to NCAA football... I'm not the guy you want to call out. Really.

Here's my final point: Miami absolutely sucks. What's your excuse for that? You talk all that smack about FSU... so what's the deal with the Canes? He's not Saban. This is his 2nd year as an HC. I will fully admit Saban is a better coach. I hope Randy continues to progress - he's better this year, but he's not there.

He's not Meyer either. He's a better recruiter, but he's not there as a game day coach.

To be fair - you guys have good experienced players. Same goes for the Gators. We don't. Look at the guys scoring TD's for us vs. Bama. We have a significantly higher proportion that are freshman. Our WR corps at this point is pretty much all frosh. Jones is your best WR, but that TE y'all got (forgot his name) will likely get drafted - I think he's a senior.
Coffee is a junior, no? Same for Upchurch? Ingram is a frosh. But you aren't solely relying on him.
To top it off - you have Wilson who's finally coming into his own at QB. Senior.
We have 2 promising QB's but are playing in their 8th game.

Your OL is way experienced. Andre Smith is a top 10 or 15 pick if he comes out. We ain't got anyone near that level.

Those 9 seniors you have will likely be drafted. The seniors Miami has won't. Shannon wasn't left with much in the cup board in the junior/senior classes.

Honestly - I don't know what more Saban could do if he were with Miami. Beat FSU, maybe. Not UF for sure. Maybe beat UNC. But both UNC and FSU were combined 6 point losses.

rubbering..sittingt at home for 6 weeks IMO is detrimental to a team..they lose their poise...i hope to god the "elfin 11" has a championship game..believe me. and the way texas played...dont get me started!!!!!!!!!!:toofunny:

Hey man... seriously... props to you for a classy response to my pissy post. Sometimes I forget that the "tone" of a forum post is hard to perceive. I edited it after re-reading it.

I'm just talkin' smack. Cheers, man! :drunk:

TENNESSEE SUCKS!!!!!......That is all.

Damn, you could cut the tension with a knife in here today. Maybe i just see it more because i didn't drink today. I hope you boys had enough for me then!

It really will hurt you guys. I think Ohio State would have lost the last two nat'l championship games no matter what, but the games would've been a lot closer without the ridiculous layoff. Complain to the commissioner, my friend.

Trauma1, your boys looked ridiculous today. With an LSU loss, Bama is sitting pretty right now for an SEC Championship invite. Looks like the winner of the UGA-UF game will be in the same position. I'm starting to regret my initial hopes of a Crimson Tide - Gators matchup.

Wait... naaaaahhhhhh! Screw you guys!

ROLL TIDE.

It was fun to be up in gainesville. Most of the students were still recovering from the gator growl the night before. Everytime i go up there i remember how great it was in college. :)

Anyway, our matchup just may happen. We have some work to do still, but i really want to see this game come to fruitation.

GO GATORS!!!
