Cheese makes you hold water - BroScience?

Whacked

Well-known member
I used to run straight keto diets back in the day (meats+cheese = what a healthy lifestyle LOL), along with the anabolic diet version at one point.

I never noticed any "water weight" gain from the BLOCKS of cheese I was eating.

If it is ONLY based upon cheese's relatively high sodium content, well, the sodium content of Deli meat (heck, almost any "prepared meal") is MUCH worse.

Where does this logic come from?

I also never noticed any water weight while I was going "no-carb" and ate cheese at large quantities.

-This does interest me. Nice thread.

One point to bring up though is that carbs hold water so by virtue of us being on very low carb diets (keto-styte), perhaps we got an indirect depletion of water weight from the lack of carbs that may have offset any discernable oedema we might have otherwise experienced?

Perhaps. I know I lose water like crazy while on such diets.

I know competitive bb'ers that have sworn off ALL forms of dairy products for the same reasons. Like they have some almost demonic (lol) power/ability to add subcutaneous muscle definition blunting water weight for reasons that transcend just sodium content.

Here we go again, milk/dairy is not "that" bad so what's the big deal here?

Same here.

First thing I do after a carb loaded binge, go RIGIDLY low carb next day; typically only consuming VERY lean meat (unsalted grilled chx + lettuce "salads").

I'm almost immediately back on target by the following day.

I think it just stems from the fact that dairy tends to bloat some people, which will cause them to look not as "defined" and sharp, so they just swear off all dairy lol.

Maybe it is that simple? Beats me.

But it sure is wisespread "gospel" ya know?

I just always wanted to get to the bottom of it for my own knowledge that's all.

Off to go eat a BLOCK of cheddar...... :D

Probably this. I've seen quite a few posts from people who have said the only way they can below 10% BF is by dropping all dairy. When people read this and see the photos of people with single digit BF they assume that all dairy is bad for you and make you retain water.

Thanks all. I hate to belabor this to death but the aforementioned "bloat" could just as easily be from an inability to breakdown lactose and NOT from the exaggerated sodium content though you know????

If thats the case, supplementing with lactase enzymes (i.e. Lactaid) could/would help.

It depends on a person's tolerance for lactose.
Also, if you are going strict keto, be sure the cheese contains 0 carbs for obvious reasons.

As you diet, especially for longer periods, certain foods get cut immediately. Most will cut out dairy is milk sugar can cause issues when dieting, then as the dairy-less diet continues, the body tends to lower its' own lactase levels. So with limited ability to digest lactose, your body can tend to bloat.

Dairy can be essential for dieting though, and studies support the consumption while dieting as it tends to lead to further fat loss.

Calcium or Dairy. I've heard the former but never the latter.

anytime i drink 2 or more glasses of milk a day i notice my stomach looks and feels so bloated almost like a just ate 4 pounds of chinese food or something. I always wondered why this was? no stomach discomfort just annoying bloat that can demoralize you a tad bit.

I guess it really depends person to person. While doing even the most strict dieting... I never had issues with dairy.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I don't think I could survive the keto diets without cheese and ranch dressing.
