Calf growth

Hey everyone and thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions you may have. I'm wondering if any of you have any other suggestions on calf exercises that I can supplement into my current regime. The gym I go to has a standing calf raise machine and a leg press you can use for calves but that's about it. I know I can always improvise and come up with something but I'm just asking for suggestions, also if you guys have a good rep range and/or set count. My quads and hamstrings continue to grow but my calves have always been hard to put size on. Thanks again
 
Curious as well. Also curious about whether there is anything short of calf implants that can be done to get these *******s to grow.
 
I get calves from doing stairs.
 
Ehh I really am not feeling like an implant lol. Best of luck with it though, how much is it if you don't mind me asking? Just out of curiosity
 
It's around 4k to 6k. I'm just considering it right now. But honestly it's the first thing ppl notice if I ever wear shorts and it also looks stupid if I wear jeans when everyone else is virtually wearing shorts. First world problem I guess but I'm vain and not afraid to admit it lol
 
I'm also in a cold country right now but see myself warming to a place that is warm year round so it's kind of something I don't want to have to think about everyday. It really sucks bc I put in so much work for other parts of my body but one look at my calves and it all goes down the drain...got skinny ankles too :(
 
Calfs are a pain... I still have pretty weak calfs so I'm not exactly the best person to chime in but the one thing that my calfs did respond to was training them DC style. Lately though I've been super setting standing calfs with working the front of them by sitting on the lying hamstring curl machine and lifting the pad with my toes I've seen John meadows doing them. Another big thing is FULL range of motion ( almost to the point of exaggerated range
 
try this and with the keyboard i will try to explain it best as possible- this can be done sitting or standing and as matter of fact you should do it when doing calves. Im not going to lie and say its easy, it will burn and if you curse my name afterwards it work well

when you are in position, the first set (the formation doesnt matter and should be cycled but do all three 1 after the other)

1st set your feet will be normal- | | - (those are your feet)
2nd set the ball of your foot will be pointed in / \ almost pigeon toed
3rd set the ball of your foot will be pointed out - backwards for the above

low down and get the full stretch and push back up - at the top/peak of the excercise squeeze and repeat

go for 8-10 reps on each of these total of 24 - 30 reps and 3 sets

remember when you are done with all 3- 1 set get up slowly and stretch each foot SLOWLY- out your foot on something to get a good stretch. these 3 will help to get the diamond shape and strength in the calve.

can be done 4 or 5 times a week as calves - like abs - are worked everyday during normal day to day activities and need to be worked on harder than bi's or tri's

I kinda trained calves today. I need to massage them cuz they're freakin' tight!!

I have cruddy genetics for calves but finally got some growth out of them this year. Biggest thing was to focus on them. I did standing calf raises (1 leg bodyweight) almost everyday. I added either reps or time held at the top every week. Also, as said earlier I made sure I had full range of motion by doing the on an elevated surface. Oh, apparently it helps to pause at the bottom too to get rid of some stretch reflex.

Good luck to all my no calf bretheren and please do no get implants. Your going to look like you have someones balls in your leg.

Lol fair enough on the implants...but seriously the before and after pics I've seen are pretty legit....someone needs to come up with a fashion accessory to hide that **** lol

huge misconception- the problem is people don't work them hard enough or in multiple ways- as mentioned above, calves and core muscles are used everyday and require special attn.

really not as hard as people make it out to be
 
also,

sitting at a seated calve press or standing and trying to bang out 30 reps in 9 seconds is the absolute stupidest training method; well one of. this fast pace that people do is almost the simulation of everyday usage. if everyday walking increased strength and definition, people wouldn't have an issue.

you have to get the full stretch at the low point bring the wgt down slowly with control. At the peak of the exercise you most raise up again in normal pace, squeeze and hold. then repeat-

it burns and hurts and when you stand up you are going to say OMG WTF-

Actually, it has a lot to do with genetics. I, personally do not train calves often. Maybe once in a while when I'm bored. Both my parents have strong and defined leg muscles.

We're all built differently. I can cut and grow my legs but not my arms because I am top heavy, and I train more uppers than lowers.
 
I agree but disagree- my theory on that, if you believe genetics has a major role to play with your ability to better yourself, you are selling yourself short. Lee Priest would agree

I agree with both of you, but I have heard that genetics plays a big role in the SHAPE of your calves not so much the size, however like I said that's just what I've heard before. Either way it just comes down to me maybe needing to focus more on and hit calves harder. Like I said my hamstrings and quads never have trouble putting on size but I just feel my calves are lagging. Thanks to everyone for advice and conversation!

And like I've always said, "What works for one person may not work for another, and it doesn't mean they're not trying their best."

Exactly. I am not predisposed to having large calves and went from 15.5 to 18.5 over the years through lots of hard work and targeted training. Plus, once you really start hitting them, they are like forearms in terms of definition and vascularity, so a double win.

exactly and when you start seeing that little something, you just push them harder and harder.

Yes, that will help a person that normally does not train a muscle group. I trust you probably are not that person if you are on this board. So, what makes you feel that you can properly stimulate and grow without continued resistance? Why is the calf any different that the other muscle groups we train?

I did this for a couple of months basically and got more growth than I've seen in years but was to be expected as my calf training previously only consisted of a couple sets of calf raises after lower body days. Now I do calves 3-4xweek and slowly but surely they are looking a little better.

The poor little twiggletts attached to my ankles are STUBBORN when it comes to growth.

Thank you! I like to work them out on the stairs and mixing them with leg presses. I feel the most pump with these two exercises. :)

I think people over-think calves.. They try impossible things to try grow them, meanwhile I do some basics and merely "stimulate" them at the gym, not try wreck them. They grow from that alone... When I used to destroy them in the gym back in my bro-science believing days, they never grew ever..
 
I've been doing the 100 calf raises with no weights or machines for about 1.5 weeks now and seeing progress I had never seen before
