breezy's training, supplementation, and food log

You're BBer material Breezy. Impressive as hell.

You can be "BBer material" at 150lbs. :D

Thanks Jiigzz. I'll most likely make the switch at some point, but probably give a National level show a shot first. I think my frame might be better suited for BB as well.

Looking good Breezy!

Thanks bud.

Good discussion from FB a couple weeks ago, turned article:

Here's another quick read on "getting fat" and how it affects gaining strength and muscle:

Awesome read! Very well put.

My 2015 goal is to break Jesse Norris's drug tested world record squat. I've got some work to do after seeing his picture lol Apparently, we're a completely different 220.

You're telling me Jesse Norris is drug tested and weighs 220 in that photo..?

No sir. But he holds the drug tested 198 & 220 drug tested squat records. I've seen that he's well surpassed 700 though, meaning, he's on PED's now. Otherwise those records woulda been updated.

Yeah, pretty good. I was curious what you PL guys would think.

Lol it's still an awesome goal to shoot for, which I think you'll accomplish.

I'll have today's back session posted shortly. I'll be doing my own training for the next month or so, as I finished with the Meadows program and won't start a new one until after my competition. It was originally going to take me into my final week of prep, but that changed when the comp date got pushed back. That said, I'll still be doing Mtn. Dog and my sessions will have a lot of influence from John's latest programs and what he's doing currently as well. Volume and intensity are going to be at a very high level, which was the case today. I haven't been this beat up from a back session in quite a while and it feels fantastic.

I love all the articles Breezy posts...if it isn't something I've already read it is something I wish I had so I get a lot out of it.

Lat Pulldowns
80x10 (warm-up)
100x10 (warm-up)
120x10 (warm-up)
140x10
150x10
160x10
170x10 w/10sec isohold, 120x8 w/10sec isohold

-moderately wide pronated grip

-slight lean back/driving elbows down

-I would've preferred forced reps on the final set, but subbed isotension (stopping/holding bar about halfway up on the eccentric) due to training alone.

Banded (old school) T-Bar Rows
25x20 (warm-up)
25x30 (warm-up)
30x40, x5 no band
35x40, x5 no band
35x40, x5 no band
50x26 (failure)

-This was brutal and I was very close to puking

-I got into a rhythm and pumped these out, while maintaining solid form. The additional reps without a band were done with a 2sec hard flex.

-Another exercise where I would've liked forced reps. I started them banded instead, so I could extend the set once removing the added tension.

DB Pullovers
60x10
60x10
60x10 w/10sec isohold

-good chance to catch my breath

Rack Pulls
135x5 (warm-up)
185x5 (warm-up)
225x5 (warm-up)
275x3
315x3
365x3
405x10

-pulling from mid-shin level

-worked up to what would be a somewhat tough triple and did a challenge set to failure

-Not being able to take advantage of leg drive and being towards the end of a session, made these very tough.

Prone DB Shrugs
80x10
80x10
80x10
80x10

-slow and controlled with a 3 sec hold/flex at the top

I stood on a Pro Short Mini for the t-bar rows.

I can agree with that for weight class sports, but there is no denying that the heavier lifters move more weight even if they don't move more weight lb for lb.

I'm just saying, there is something to be said for absolute strength levels in athletes with higher bodyfat.

Otherwise, Zydrunas Savickas wouldn't have so many records and so many WSM titles and podium placings.

Exactly how I do a tbar row in my garage

- another fine update and very interested to see how your workouts unfold over the next few weeks..

Nice. I like using that setup more often than the actual machines (chest supported and not).

Thanks man. Today's leg session is going to be ridiculous.

Yeah, I could see "extra" bodyweight being beneficial with some WSM events (like truck pull), where it can be used to help "move" the weight, but I wouldn't necessarily consider that more "strength". However, I'd think those same people could be leaner, just as strong, and improve their time in other events, due to better mobility/explosiveness.

The leverage gained from the extra bodyweight helps in almost every event.

If what you said were true Mariusz Pudzianowski would hold all of the records that Zydrunas has because Mariusz was very lean. But, Zydrunas is the one with all of the lifting records.

Also if being leaner were beneficial for WSM the podium every year wouldn't be full of guys that weigh 400+, it would have the lighter BW athletes that carry less body fat.

And, don't confuse high levels of bodyfat with poor conditioning as they are not the same. No one ever wins WSM by doing terribly at events that involve conditioning (stone runs, loading races, fingals fingers, truck pull, I could go on) and I would bet any amount of money that their conditioning is better than all of ours, even with the extra BW.

Most people are not going to make optimal gains in strength (or muscle, for that matter) maintaining 8% bodyfat. In my experience, the greatest gains in muscle and strength (in the average individual) occur while maintaining and BF% of around 10-15%.

Now, there is something to be said about absolute strength at higher BF%, especially in natural athletes. Look at the best shot putters and hammer throwers, and most of them carry 25% body fat.

From the man himself.

I honestly wasn't trying to say that WSM competitors would be better off with a lower bf%, just that there are probably some advantages/disadvantages at both ends of the spectrum. I'm sure they all have great conditioning as well.

This morning's leg session was full of intensity (not relative to 1RM) and my legs are still shaking uncontrollably.

Lying Leg Curls
65x15
65x15
65x15
65x15
65x15
65x15

-warming up hamstrings/getting some blood into legs

Reverse Band Barbell Squats
135x10 (warm-up)
185x10 (warm-up)
225x10 (warm-up)
275x8
315x8
365x8
405x8
425x8
445x13

-worked up with explosive sets of 8 until speed was compromised

-finished with a challenge set

-band setup worked out well; provided some pop out of the bottom and had me holding all the weight at the top

2nd working set: I should've charged my phone before heading to the gym, as it died when trying to record the challenge set. I would've liked to get the other exercises on video as well. :(

Banded Hack Squats
20 reps with just the weight of the machine (no bands)
20 reps with Pro Monster Minis
25 reps with Pro Monster Minis/Pro Minis + 10 second isotension
25 reps with Pro Monster Minis/Pro Minis + 10 second isotension + 10 second rest (lockout) + 5 second isotension

-feet low on platform, heels together, toes pointed out, pushing with balls of feet

-slow/controlled eccentric with no lockout at the top

-isotension: slowly lowered to where tension reached it's peak and held in place

HS Iso Leg Extensions
50x20
50x26 + 5 forced reps + 10 second isotension
50x25 + 5 forced reps + 10 second isotension

-1st set with strict form and a 2 second flex at the top of each rep

-2nd and 3rd sets just pumping out reps to failure before forced reps (HS machine has "arms" that allowed me to continue with assisted reps) and isotension (pushed down on arms and fought the added tension)

Lying Leg Curls
80x15
80x15 + 5 forced reps + 10 second isohold
80x15 + 5 forced reps + 10 second isohold

This was the inspiration for today's hack squats:

Man I wish I had a hack squat machine the gym.

I have a very 'make shift' hack squat... angled patio stone (double thick), in the smith rack. It is the best I can come up with in the garage.

Don't have to tell you that was a killer workout Breezy.

Go B's!

Shaking uncontrollably, are they still intact? Damn that's a workout, I bet you had a good sweat going on.

Ha yeah, they're alright. Just an occasional twitch at this point. I was a sweaty mess.

Man I wish I had a hack squat machine the gym.

I'm surprised you don't. You could try leaning back into a Smith as an alternative.

My knees hate watching John doing those hacks.
Totally agree with you ace. Ice tried this same routine and it killed my knees. I'm hoping some sleeves and icy hot may help next time.

There was literally no strain on my knees at all. Staying on/pushing off the balls of my feet seemed to lessen the potential impact as well; provided a little extra "give".

I bought a box of cream of rice. I'm going to give it a shot with the protein powder. Did you have a recipe that you use quite often that you found delicious?

Cream of Rice, OEProtein, and nut butter. Look forward to it everyday (pre-workout).

Awesome thank you. I see the bands are on sale. I think I'm going to go with a set of minis, a set of monster minis and a set of micros. Do you think that's good?

I actually think I'm going to go with a pair of minis and a pair of micros. If I wanted something heavier than the minis I could always combine the minis and micros together couldn't I? Then it would be like the monster mini. Any input:)

When my band pack arrived the colors were different than the picture shown for the mountain dog training pack. Not entirely sure which is which - I just use them based on feel.

Heard lots of good things about the creamed rice. Yet to pull the trigger myself though

I MIGHT have to try after prep......better be good or I'm throwing it at people on the street.

You'll never want oats again. :)

You should be alright with those. You could double the Pro Minis for certain exercises as well.

I believe this is what you have:

Red: Pro Mini, Pro Short Mini
Green: Pro Monster Mini
Orange: Pro Light, Pro Micro

Cream of Rice, OEProtein, and nut butter. Look forward to it everyday (pre-workout).
Ok I did 1/4 cup cream of rice with almost 2 level scoops of chocolate PB swirl protein and sliced a banana on top. Wow! This is damn good!!! Thanks breezy

Have it as a pre wo meal. No harm done imo. I'm doing John's recipe atm. Cream of rice nut butter and sugar free chocolate syrup protein powder

Same here. No idea

Edit- thanks breezy for squaring that away.

Quick question.. are you taking this an hour before lifting or ? If you are also using a preworkout powder what is your time line like leading into the workout?

Great question, I was wondering as well. Also this maybe a stupid question but when you say nut butter you mean peanut butter right?

I actually quit having oats pre wo as they were giving me a huge gut ache. Cream of rice absorbs way faster so it's a huge win imo. The chocolate syrup is awesome for flavor.

Oats pre do the same thing to be.. will give this a go. Thanks for sharing your pre-protocol Justin.

Pre-workout of champions.

No problem, bud.

I eat my Cream of Rice immediately before heading to the gym, which is usually 30-45 mins before I actually start training. I rarely use pre-workout stims anymore. Probably a couple times per month. If I do, I drink my pre on the ride to the gym, right after my meal.

Peanut or almond butter. I rotate based on what flavor OEProtein I'm using. Vanilla with almond, Banana with peanut, Strawberry or Chocolate is a toss up.

I literally haven't had a single oat since first trying Cream of Rice.

Ok ok ok. I'm sold. This is going in the basket next grocery day lol

Checkin in for the no oats anymore club.

Some motivational words from the young, but knowledgeable and insightful, Alexander Juan Antonio Cortes :

"On finding passion,

Had a conversation with a friend yesterday who wanted to know how I had "found" my passion in the fitness industry.

I didnt find. I BUILT IT.

I never planned to work in this field or had grand foresight in goal setting. Truth be told, Ive never set goals in anything, I just had things I wanted to do, so I learned what i needed to do and then did them. I started personal training in college part time and after walking out of the performing arts field, training I enjoyed enough to keep on doing.

I always had a commitment to improving at it, but there were many times when I considered quitting and doing something else. Apathy, doubt, resentment were things I experienced. I just never gave into them

So Despite those periods, I held fast to the belief that so long as I worked as hard as I could, those points of doubts would be followed by periods of growth. Much like having strength or muscle stagnate and then super compensate, there are times when you simply need to keep your head down and do work, and trust the process of this leads to something.

Year over year I found myself loving it more and more, even when I wanted to break up with it. And the more into it I was, the more it rewarded me, and the harder I worked the more opportunities presented themselves, and then the harder I could work taking those on, and so on and so forth

So the "finding" of passion then, I really dont believe it works that way at all. And everyone young my age thats flighty and "searching" really needs to take a step back and WORK at something before declaring themselves lost. You're not lost, but youve likely never worked hard enough at anything to "find" yourself in it."
