Body can only process 30g sugar a day

Heard a reputable coach who is known to be a very educated guy say today that your body can only process roughly 30g of sugar a day. Be it from soda or an apple after that rough number its junk calories and will contribute to slop weight gain. Seems like crap to me but I wanted to hear from you all as to why it's crap or why he's correct or nearly correct.

I would disagree 100% with this statement. Essentially every carbohydrate you ingest is broken down into sugars, whether it be cookies or whole wheat bread. Also, there are different types of sugar. The majority of sugar found in fruit is fructose, which is broken down in the liver and can be used to replenish liver glycogen. The liver can hold around 90-110g of glycogen. Other refined sugars are sucrose, which breaks down differently in the body and are used to replenish muscle glycogen. Energy requirements per person will vary greatly based on a variety of factors, but the 30g statement simply isn't true.

Its possible that this statement could be true for a completely sedentary individual. But if you're exercising daily, you're using far more energy (glycogen) than 30g per day. I think its false to assume that all carbohydrates and sugars are created equal, but you body can definitely utilize more than 30g of sugar per day if you are physically active - especially post workout. If what your coach said was true, I'd be reallllll fat, lol.

Another point to consider is "added sugar"

sucrose, dextrose, maltose, glucose, lactose and fructose. Agave nectar, cane crystals, corn sweetener, corn syrup, evaporated cane juice, honey, high-fructose corn syrup, molasses, syrup and fruit juice concentrates are also types of added sugars

and johnpatterson we all be a bunch of portly fellows

He's not my coach, just a coach who has a ton of clients and from the outside looking in seems to know it all but when I heard him say that to a client asking about giving her kids fruit I couldn't help but look at him like "wtf man". I don't have kids but if my kids wanted fruit over all this other processed garbage I'd let them have it. He recommended only giving a cup of fruit to them at a time.

I thought I knew quite a bit on carbs but I've never know about the liver. Thanks for the awesome post man. That's going in my notes and I'll research more into it.

I find it surprising that someone who seems so knowledgeable would make a statement like that. Maybe for children I'd opt to limit sugar intake, but I agree with encouraging fruit. Fruit has so many other benefits than simply viewing it as sugars. 100% agree with you.

You're welcome brother! Yeah the way the body processes carbohydrates is fascinating. I've read tons of literature on it to try and understand it better, and I feel that I still don't grasp the concept fully haha. Layne Norton has a lot of great info on carbohydrate sources and timing - I know he always recommends to limit fructose (sugar from fruit) to one serving post workout and incorporate more sucrose and starchy carbs to help replenish muscle glycogen quicker. I'll see if I can find the article for you

It is crap. Completely made up crap

Heck yea, hook me up lol. I eat up all the dietary literature I can find. I think it's fascinating

Yeah I am with John Patterson on this one. I hate it when anybody, let alone "coaches", demonize a specific food. The body is an amazing machine, and to set a one-size fits all limitation is not only wrong but just plain dumb.

I would check out Miguel Blacutt on YouTube as well.

Bro Science - plain and simple man. I would be obese if this were even remotely true. I am over 30g everyday and a day when I smash 6 donuts or a pint or whatever would likely have killed me by now. RIP as well to my homeboyz mkretz booneman77

Heck, many coaches of college or pro athletes advise Choc milk post-wo lol.
The Solution who preaches moderation would be a big fatso yet he is shredding for a show lol.

ya if 30g of sugar was the daily limit every person on earth thats not literally starving would be obese. thats just silly. you can eat 30g of sugar just in incidental amounts

Exactly!

How many times you reckon you hit 300? Lol

Don't knock it until you try it ;)
Yesterday was a cheat day and I hadn't had one in 2 months, it would have made many fat people drool gravy. But I wasn't use to all the junk and fat and I though I was going to hurl by lunch time. Those 3 chicken pot pies for breakfast and the soda did not sit well.

Hope that was a diet soda ;)
