Article: Pullovers: bad exercise for the pecs, but good fo

Well duh, the bench press is better than pullovers, but the pullover is a good and old timey exercise to throw in your routine just to mix things up!

Edit- also everytime i do pullovers my teres major gets insanely sore!

I like the way my upper / center of my chest feels after doing pullovers.

F this, pullovers are awesome for chest development and rib cage expansion. Go a bit lower and you get great lat and serratus stimulation.

I agree man! I don't consider a a mass exercise like presses but I think it's a great exercise too.

I'd be curious to see how much of a difference there would be, between bodybuilders and untrained individuals, on an exercise like this. I think it's easy with pullovers to allow the last and triceps to take over. You really have to focus on your chest for that mind muscle connection.

Pull overs are for your lats lol. If your focusing on anything else your going to end up with shoulder and or elbow pain. It blows my mind how people have no idea of the mechanics of exercise.

Pullover muscle activation, like anything, depends on Range of Motion and arm alignment.

This article is right that there is more Lat activation than Pectoral Major activation.

However if your elbows travel near the ear the Pectoral Minor gets a lot of activation, if the elbows are flared out the Lats get a lot of activation.

The Pectoral Minor can be as large as the bicep, so training this muscle as a prime mover instead of a stabilizer (almost all other exercises) enhances the chest development greatly.

So this article is flawed by not discussing form of Pullover and its affect on the trained muscles.

Really? Well, Kai Greene does them for chest. I think he might know a thing or two about it.

What does he attribute his chest development too from these ......2% maybe. There is a bit of chest in the movement...and you can focus your attention on chest during the movement if you wish. But there are allot better chest building exercises (not talking about pressing here) then a pullover.

Anyways, its about what works for you bud.

Agreed with that, trial and error. It's more of a stretch than a builder for an end lmotion

Really? You're my bud? Thanks pal!

If you keep your arms straight while doing pullovers then yes it does work the lats, but if you bend your elbows keeping the dumbbell close to your head through the movement then it hits the chest more.

Maybe you need to read up on the mechanics of exercise a little more.

Pullovers for triceps? What?

I do them for bringing out definition in some of the rib cage muscles (serratus, ect..). Rib cage expansion sounds nice but I don't buy into that too much. I've done pullovers for years and I've never noticed any kind of expansion whatsoever.

And it's not a pullover unless you're perpendicular to the bench. If you're completely on the bench (parallel) then it's the equivalent of doing girl push ups.

Are you trying to say John Meadow's does girl push ups? :P

I do them parallel, head hanging off the end of the bench, bring the dumbbell over the forehead area then back down, constant tension Meadow's style.

Dumbbell pullovers for rib cage expansion and chest... machine pullover WILL hit lats because the extra range of motion at bottom... also stiff armed pulldowns are better for lats

Bud, I think you need add an AI to your supplementation protocol. And good luck building your chest using pull overs lmao.
Don't get your panties in a twist buddy. For the record I rarely do pullovers. I do a lot of presses, flys, and dips for chest. All I'm saying is that they may have their place amongst chest training. Especially since people who know what they are talking about like to include them in their chest training. Ok pal?

I use pullovers as a warmup

I can that were buds now. So ya...what your saying makes allot sense. And for the record I only wore panties once on Halloween. I enjoy pullovers at the end of a back or chest workout...I think they are great for stretching out the rib cage, posture / re-aligning the upper body after bombing it. It's whatever works for you. The best bodybuilder in the world may do something that disagrees with your body completely no matter how much you try to get the exercise right. Dips for me...destroy my shoulder and yank on my bicep tendon no matter what I do. It's probably cause I am 47 and have to work around all those little injuries from years and years of training. All the best....

I did pullovers the other night after not doing them in years and my tri's were sore as hell the next day.
