Article: Nutrition Myths

Kidney Health?... Protein consumed in large amounts has no effect on kidneys? Contact any nephrologist of a US high repute hospital and he/she will tell you a different story. The truth is that we eat way too much protein, keeping constant pressure upon the kidneys, when what we really need is more sleep. And there's no substitute for sleep.

True about sleep. Impact of protein on kidney function remains contentious and controversial. Too much of anything is unhealthy regardless of what it is. Most MDs argue a healthy diet is the key to quality health, however, of the physicians I work with among my peers, very few are well trained in nutritional needs and balanced diets and most do not follow their own advice. Protein requirements will continue to inspire debate. Some argue 2g of protein per pound body weight. Others suggest 120-140g per day is maximal for optimal cellular benefit and beyond this is detrimental. Straight clear answers are elusive and hard to come by with respect to nutritional needs for body builders and athletes.

Awsome read.

Almost every piece of research about kidney health and protein examined those who already had compromised kidney function. Thats a big difference to healthy people. If too much was really a problem i and many people i know would have kidney problems....but for some reason we don't and for some reason our bloodwork on kidney function always comes back good.
