Abstract:
Eurycoma longifolia extract which is believed to have aphrodisiac properties was tested in mice and human testicular

homogenates. The claimed effect was observed through the ability of the extract to enhance the elevation of the androgen

level in the homogenates. In vitro analysis using capillary gas chromatography on rat testicular homogenates showed an

increase in androgen level. The levels of testosterone and its metabolism were seen to be significantly higher with the

presence of Eurycoma longifolia extract. In vivo studies was carried out by treating male mice through intraperitonial

injection. The effect of Eurycoma longifolia extract on the serum testosterone level was examined by radioimmunoassay. Our

observation showed that the serum testosterone level in treated mice was significantly higher than the untreated mice.

Results obtained suggest that Eurycoma longifolia extract has the ability to increase the biosynthesis of androgen. The

observed effect could provide the possible explanation of the claimed aphrodisiac properties of the plant.
