Article: Foods You Should Never Eat

By Tiffany Gagnon Men's Fitness

They may taste good, and appear somewhat harmless, but if you value your health, step away from these chemical-laced, high-sugar foods.

Your diet is an incredibly powerful thing. As you’ve adapted yours, you’ve most likely seen positive changes in how you look and feel. On the flip side, you also know what your body feels like when it's running on chemical-laden, high-fat foods. And while you generally know what to avoid, some of the worst offenders aren’t so obvious. That's why we've enlisted the help of New York City-based dietitian Tanya Zuckerbrot M.S., R.D., who's helped us compile a short list of foods that should never make it past your lips.

1) Farmed Salmon
Salmon is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. It’s particularly high in omega-3 fatty acid, which can help lower triglyceride levels and blood pressure. Salmon also contains energy-boosting B vitamins and vitamin D, which is found naturally in very few foods. The problem with the farmed variety of the fish: “Farmed salmon is higher in contaminants and contains more saturated fat and more sodium compared to wild salmon," explains Zuckerbrot. "So opt for wild salmon when possible and you’ll also get more potassium, calcium, and iron.”

2) Conventionally-Grown Apples
Apples make the perfect on-the-go snack, but grab the wrong kind and you'll be ingesting a bit more than you bargained for. The average conventionally grown apple is covered in more pesticide residue than any other fruit or vegetable in the grocery store, according to an Environmental Working Group report. Opt for organic apples if you can.

3) White Chocolate
Don’t get your chocolates twisted. Dark chocolate is one of the healthiest superfoods out there, but the white stuff doesn’t even come close to providing health benefits. A three-ounce serving contains a whopping 50 grams—that's more than 12 teaspoons' worth—of sugar. “Overconsumption of sugar can have health consequences, like obesity and tooth decay," notes Zuckerbrot. "Swap white chocolate for a one-ounce piece of dark chocolate, which has been shown to have heart health benefits.”

4) Food Coloring
Food coloring is sneaky. Unless you’re eating whole foods 24/7, it’s likely that you’re downing some dye here and there. “Not only have food dyes been linked to hyperactivity, artificial food coloring is also a red flag that a food may be nutritionally lacking," says Zuckerbrot. "Far better are natural additives, like beetroot powder or paprika, which are used to enhance the color of food.”

5) Creamy Salad Dressing
You should be eating salads every day, but one shake of creamy Caesar dressing and that good nutrition gets buried under a mountain of crap—not to mention, the calorie count for your healthy meal or snack just doubled. “These dressings contain a smorgasbord of preservatives, like MSG, food dyes, and ingredients that keep these mass-produced products creamy and fresh for long periods of time," says Zuckerbrot. "Instead, stick to olive oil and balsamic or red wine vinegar to keep your salads chemical- and cream-free.”

6) Fried Chicken
Chicken is an excellent source of protein, making it one of the best muscle-building foods. But once you toss that baby in a fryer, you turn a fat-burning all-star into a waistline-expanding food that will put you at risk for serious heart problems. “One measly piece of fried chicken adds about 10 grams of fat to your diet, and a high-fat diet has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease," says Zuckerbrot. "Instead of frying your chicken, save yourself nine grams of fat by baking it in the oven and squeezing lemon on top for an extra burst of flavor.”

Nutritional misinformation. I wake up to this :(

Serious question: what part is misinformation and why?

I do avoid white chocolate, food coloring and fried foods like the plaque.

I will say I do eat farm raised salmon because it's cheaper and I do eat apples but I always wash them first.

Why do you avoid these things is a better question?

Food coloring has no problem going through us. Are you alergic?

Fried food should only be avoided if the calories and fat don't fit in your diet.

Sugar is not to be feared. White chocolate is not even chocolate anyway.

Salmon is cheap. Organic,fresh fished,whatever doesn't matter.

WITH YOU THERE! fried potato wedges!

"Apples make a perfect on-the-go snack"
Yeah love the massive amounts of protein I get from those.
Also never eating salmon unless it is wild caught is pretty damn stupid.
Obviously food coloring is not gonna be helpful but also the last thing you should care about.
And why should I eat slad everyday?
The rest seems legit to avoid 6 days out of 7 but "never" is just stupid..

So yeah.. avoid fried food and wash your apples with hot water.

1)sure more contaminants are bad. but sodium being an issue? well dont salt the crap out of everything and problem solved. and saturated fats have a purpose in the body. yes too much can be harmful in the long run but too much water can kill you too. so should you avoid water?

2)like apples are a make it or break it point for your diet. wash the fruit, problem solved. or eat other fruits.

3)i have nothing to say about this one

4)seems like majoring in the minors but ok.

5)another major in the minoring thing. if salad dressing destroys your diet than your diet sucks ass to start with.

6)OMG!! 10 grams of fat. wow. seeing as how i eat about 50% of my calories from fat, compete in 2 sports with one of them being a weight class type sport i dont see the issue. 10 grams is a drop in the bucket and more majoring in the minors. for informational sake, i take in at around 150grams of fat a day. some days as high as 200.

Fried stuff tends to have medium carbs and fat, that is reason enough to avoid it in my eyes.
I want high protein medium fat no carbs.
But that's me. Still I think fried stuff should bw avoided most times.
And who the fuc.k eats white chocolate and expects it to be good in a diet??

Listen fat guys. If you wanna be fat and not get the gals then eat your fried food and buffets. But don't fill up the comment section with your ignorance

i eat fried foods and buffets. i weigh 195 with 15% bodyfat. thats not fat at all.

this is going to sound real douche like, you must be an aspiring bodybuilder that is constantly chasing the 6 pack. well hate to bust your bubble, but plenty of people workout and get strong and big are not fat along with eating buffets and fried food.

I am a bodybuilder. I have been 6% bodyfat and I have been 25% . Fried foods don't make you fat. 15% is within healthy range. You sir are probably the reasons people are more worried about having a visible 6pac and less about lifting heavy and putting on quality size. You go ahead and keep your waist line while my legs dwarf yours.

Pryo you fatty

Abs legs I got it all.

I will out lift you any day of the week.

Power is my game

So go clog your arteries with trans fat. You fried food Junkie

I'll keep eating my baked food while looking awesome.

There is s fine line between satire and being a troll. Part of that line is knowing when to stop.
That being said there is no better food than home made fried chicken with apple coleslaw. Some times you just need a little soul food. Its all about moderation

Let's just toss this all up to being another useless Men's Fitness article as usual....

Trans fat and saturated fat raises LDL

Monostaurated fat is healthy fat

Know the difference

Carbs consumed with healthy fat prevents a insulin spike

You are the fat troll

Eat a carrot fatty

You have 14 posts and I already don't like you. Did you just come over from bb.com

Eating fried stuff as cheat is totally fine imo.
Btw 15% bf is fat as far as I am concerned, I am at 14 and trying to find a diet that lets me stay lean year round while getting stronger cuz I am pissed at being fat. Hard to do though.

I think having a visible 6pack is a good goal and many strong men are lean so there is no reason to assume it would have negative impacts on training, in fact it actually appears to give higher test levels.

It also prevents new trainees from reaching where they could be.

So keep eating like a slob and look like one.

I got abs and I'm strong as hell

wow, 15% as fat. LOL. thats classic bb.com trolling there if i have ever seen it.

thank GOD i am not a bodybuilder/beauty pageant competitor.

I'm lean cause I train real hard.

I walk in the gym and train like a mad man

And I consume healthy clean food.

As a result I look awesome. But I train to be strong and eat good to be healthy and have energy.

Looking great is just a side effect. Not my ultimate goal.

Not nescessarily.
And even so, I see no reason to rush things, most people will train SS or 5x5 and that is probably slowing progress way more.
I mean, even if my diet (2g protein per lb bodyweight and one or two meals of fatty meat, rest shakes) slows me down by a few percent I will grow more later, thanks to higher test and it serves as motivation to bust my as with heavy singles and tripples every day.

Wow lean, strong and good looking... U must be the most bad ass guy on the internet in a bodybuilding forum!!

Testosteron.
More bodyfat equals less of it. May no be the biggest difference in the world and does not mazter when using gear but I think that and looking good as well as distinguishing oneself from strong fatties is more than reason enough to persue a strict diet.
Though I have yet to really show results and the will to stick to it, started the predator diet 4days ago^^

We all have goals here too, that's why we're on this site, to share information, encourage each other, and REACH those goals. Not be d!cks to other members.

Bodyfat has little to do with testosterone in healthy ranges *10 to 20%*

You believe under 10% is unhealthy??
Little but not nothing :)
Still I think confidence and awesomeness rise when bodyfat decreases and that can lead to higher test as well.
I don't think having defined abs is the only way to go but it is defenitelly one of my goals and being able to Bench heavy while being ripped is just way more impressive to me than those fatsos in their suits...

My abs show at 16%.
Under 10 can be healthy.
Under 8 is not.
Unsubbing at this point

Under 8% is unhealthy. Under 10 is skinny /athletic.

How so?
Serious question, got any proof?
I am a big CnP fan and Jamie Lewis is under 8% most of the time while breaking records.
Being below 10% from a diet of coke and salad (aka the model diet) can't be healthy but as long as you are low bodyfat from the right diet, get everything you need (vitamines fsts protein etc) and lift heavy it seems healthy to me.

being able to Bench heavy while being ripped is just way more impressive to me than those fatsos in their suits...

spoken like a true non powerlifter. aesthetics are not a requirement of powerlifting.

come to an actual powerlifting gym and you will though that we are not all fatties. sure the super heavy weights are, but they are super heavy weights for a reason. all other weight classes, especially the smaller ones you will see quite lean guys. extra body fat does help with leverages so being too lean does not help us much.

hell, even go to a powerlifting meet. the 308 and super heavy weights you will see some guys that look fat, but guess what, they are 308 and superheavy weights. they also probably put up more than most any of us. i have seen 1800+lbs totals from what some skinny 6 pack chasers would call fat. the same guys that struggle to total 1,000.

now many of you beauty pageant competitors are taking things to an extreme here. not every meal is fried foods. not every meal is a buffet. just like 15% is not fat. and your understanding of the mechanics of metabolism is all wrong. its 150+yr old outdated information proved wrong by science many times over.

and yes, i just fed the trolls some more. :(

Not eat fried chicken??? F That..

"I know" looks scrawny as **** too..lol. Keep eating as clean as you can and you will always stay a buck fifty.

People bashing powerlifters as fat? That was another article from November or some such.

Powerlifting is a sport of hard working folks

Unfortantly that life style get u in the grave early.

Look at that big Hawaian back in the day. Who broke world bench press records with a reverse grip. Dead young :-(((
