Article: Alcohol And Bodybuilding

It's well known that alcohol increases aromatase activity as well as temporarily increasing circulating estrogen due to the increased burden that alcohol places on the kidney.

Some interesting thoughts here but the author seems to have ignored some prevailing data out there.

I'm not sure I would choose beer over hard alcohol like the author said. I'd rather take a few shots on a weekend than drink a 12-pack- lots less empty calories and bloating. But the bottom line is if you're gonna get serious about lifting, you shouldn't drink. And obviously it shouldn't even be an option if you're on AAS.

Beer might be a better option than shots for the social aspect; you can nurse a couple beers and hang out for a few hours instead of slamming down three shots then flexing by the bar like a tool.

I don't drink hardly ever, maybe 2-3x per year max, but I wonder if I'm making mistake knowing the benefits of red wine and not having a glass with dinner:

Scientific research has been done on the benefits of grape polyphenols and anthocyanidins to help support cardiovascular health and offer protection to human blood-vessel cells. Full spectrum trans-Resveratrol also provides anti-oxidant protection, boosts cellular energy, and balances the immune system.*

The secret to anti-aging lies with trans-Resveratrol, the active form of Resveratrol polyphenols found in the skins, seeds and stems of red wine grapes. Trans-Resveratrol remains active only when sheltered from the sun, light and oxygen. In this pure, ultra beneficial form, trans-Resveratrol has been proven in studies to activate the SIRT1 longevity gene and enhance cellular productivity. trans-Resveratrol is found here and available to you at its peak of potency.

Several research studies have shown that trans-Resveratrol significantly modulates biomarkers of bone metabolism, inhibits pro-inflammatory enzymes such as COX-1 and COX-2, and exhibits chemopreventive agents, anticarcinogenic properties, cardioprotective effects, neuroprotective properties, and caloric restrictive behavior.

The key to cellular energy lies within the mitochondria and has been determined to be the foundation of living longer. trans-Resveratrol has shown the ability to increase the number of mitochondria thereby increasing your total daily energy. Studies have shown that trans-Resveratrol promotes an increase in mitochondrial function, which translates into an increase in energy expenditure, improved aerobic capacity, and enhanced sensorimotor function.

And its only absorbed when you drink it by swishing it around in your mouth - it's absorbed through the gums, and metabolized into nothing when swallowed.

I think the benefits of abstaining from alcohol, albeit some benefits you have mentioned , far out way the pros for drinking.
Personally drink weekends mostly whisky and beer (hate wine especially red) and don't regret not taking red.
Stay the way you are

Frankly I feel much better and I'm more stable and centered abstaining from alcohol almost completely - its to the point where I feel guilty when I do drink, and I pride myself on my abstinence.
