Article: 7 Weight-Loss Lies We Don't Understand Why People

Skipping breakfast "can only sabotage your weight loss efforts" - not exactly true

Garbage article. Almost every point is arguable, and the last point is outright wrong. Here is an article about a nutrition professor who lost 27 lb in 10 weeks eating nothing but Twinkies and Doritos, simply by counting calories. The caveat is, you have to count calories carefully. It's very easy to go over on a junk food diet, much more difficult to go over if you're eating clean.

Worry about calories first and foremost. Then, and only then, worry about everything else. It's not say nothing else matters, but rather calories sit at the top of nutritional priorities. I don't understand why people mess this up

I don't care how "clean" (hate that term btw..) you're eating, if you're consuming too little calories you won't gain weight. And vice versa, I if you're consuming too many calories you won't lose weight.

When are they going to have an article about 7 myths about the myths that we all believe when dieting?

Did you actually read that article? He didn't eat nothing but Twinkies and Doritos, he also drank protein shakes and took multi vitamins.

This article is awful. They disproved that not eating breakfast is detrimental to weight loss. Food has a thermic effect, protein has a higher thermic effect than say fat. It doesn't matter when you consume these calories because the thermic effect of food is proportional to intake and not time of intake.

So your saying you can eat all of your protein for the day in one meal, all your carbs in another and all of your fats in another, and it wouldn't be any different to eating the same amounts mixed together in several meals?

The thermic effect would be the same overall at the end of the day. Your body needs to use x amount of calories to break down different types of food. Certain types of nutrients require more energy to break down than others. Protein has a high thermic effect while fat has a low thermic effect. Carbs can vary by a large amount depending on if they are complex carbs (e.g. wheat bread) or simple carbs (e.g. sugar). Anyway, while it would be a poor choice to consume in this way for multiple reasons... the amount of calories burned would be the same regardless of at what time you ate any of them.

I don't believe that for one minute. There is no way your body is going to utilize the protein fully if you just ate one large meal of it in a day. The human body is a bit ore complex than what you are portraying it as. Foods are handled differently by your body when used in different combinations and at different times. If it was so simple, there wouldn't be so many bs articles like this one about diet.

Yeah you're right it is an oversimplification but the difference would be negligible. They write all these articles because they get paid to.

Yes I read the article, thanks for asking though. He drank 1 protein shake per day and took vitamins. Wouldn't you? He's a nutrition professor not a maniac. A protein shake has 170 calories btw, vitamins have none. I would guess he took those measures to avoid getting sick. They're not enough to invalidate his experiment.

Right. Anyone who says that one meal is just as good or effective at giving positive body composition changes as 5 to 8 meals a day has not tried the latter and probably refuses to consider it due to its impractical nature.

Anyways, there is always more than one way to skin a cat. Likewise, there are several ways to lose body fat (let's not use the term weight loss on this forum, let's use "fat loss").

Saying this way works better to "lose weight" is not synonymous with fat loss. It's just weight. Likely to be half muscle and half fat in most cases.

Secondly, not every way is as effective as the next. One should get that out of their head. YES, THERE ARE BETTER METHODS TO BURNING FAT THAN OTHERS. NO, IT'S NOT EASY AND NEITHER IS IT PRACTICAL. THAT'S WITH ANY THING WORTH HAVING IN LIFE.

Although it doesn't matter when you eat it is proven the best method to lose weight is to eat every two hours to keep metabolism working.. Also breakfast is important to "kick start" your metabolism in the morning.. Yea you can lose weight by not eating but you won't keep that weight off.. Diets don't work lifestyle modifications do!

Your definition of "proven" is going to change as you learn more. The idea that eating more frequently, or eating breakfast, speeds up your metabolism is unfounded in any real factual evidence. Not saying it is wrong. Just saying it is not "proven".

On the opposite side of the coin, there is no scientific evidence of metabolic damage (the slowing of your metabolism due to extreme dieting situations), but the theory seems to play out in many long-term dieting situations....and I happen to consider it when dieting, even though I don't know if it is "true".

It actually has been proven in many scientific journals such as in the NSCA journal and the ISSN journal.. And it's not about speeding up or slowing down you metabolism it's about keeping it active which eating every 2 hours does.. Also there is tons of research that shows people that eat larger breakfast and smaller dinners not only maintain their weight better, but also have healthier lifestyles which was in another issn article..
