this is really a fundamental point. vouchers are the reason that Dennis Miller gives as one of his primary ones for abandoning the dems for the repubs. for many others it is true too. the primary reason people don't like vouchers (whether or not they acknowledge or admit it) is fealty to the govt. institution of the public school OVER AND ABOVE interest in the education of children and/or the ability of PARENTS to make choices about their kids' education vs. the govt/schools.
it never ceases to amaze me how many parents/politicians who are against vouchers, are the same ones sending THEIR kids to private schools. it thus also becomes a classist thang.
there is NO "seperation" issue. govt. does not give money preferentially to religious schools. it doesn't give $$ preferentially to ANY private school in that respect. PARENTS do. if 99% of parents choose catholic schools, quaker schools, jewish schools, whatEVER, it is not the govt. that does the choosing. eliminating that CHOICE is wrong. it limits choice, free expression and parental authority.
it is a TRUE choice issue, at least as much as abortion, etc. and yet this unwavering allegiance to the Holy and Perfect Public School (tm) takes precedence over the authority of parents and giving THEM the resources to make MORE choices.
and it injects much more of a market economy COMPETITION. public schools don't have to compete nearly as much when parents get the public school education FREE and have to pay full ticket for private schools. the market works. let it
