PanOxyl has been working for me too, but I'm just dealing with normal, minor adult bacne. The active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide, which basically works by killing off the p. acne bacteria (if I remember correctly).
Vit. A/retinol (a different form of vit. A) works also, and is what's in prescription acne creams. Weaker (i.e. non-prescription) doses are often found in anti-aging creams, because it helps the skin regenerate itself. But those also help with acne, at least they did in my case (I'm using Philosophy's retinol booster caps, quite pricey though). I'm not sure, though, if vitamin A supplements help...
