2009 College Football Season

I know no such thing. Do I feel the Big Ten is the equal of the SEC top to bottom? No I do not, nor do I buy into all the negativity towards for the Big Ten. The truth lies somewhere in between plenny's and your hyperbole. While we certainly do schedule our share of cupcakes, but our non-conference schedule this year is certainly tougher than Alabama's. Navy IS a good, not great football team and USC is as well. But hey Roll Tide, bring on UTC. GO MOCKINGBIRDS!!

Speaking of storied rivalries... as I suspected, Alabama's record against Ohio State is a perfect 3-0.

Not kidding here, Ohio State doesn't want anything to do with Bama. They don't match up. OSU has no run game... at all. The Tide have three RBs that would just embarrass them. If USC's defense shut Pryor down, Alabama would have him in tears by the 2nd quarter. This holds up even if Bama goes 8-4 and OSU finishes with one loss.

So you say, I feel we would fair VERY well against Alabama and I suspect Penn State will as well in 2010 and 2011. Time will tell. I cannot argue with the history (sparse though it may be) we have never beaten Alabama. We clearly lack a top flight running back and I would say that is our biggest problem on offense as Tressel wants to run the ball.

OSU barely gets by # 63 Navy and shuts out #108 Toledo. They LOSE to the ONLY top 10 team they'll see this year outside of Penn State. And, as it turns out, USC was way over-rated to begin with.

Alabama dominates #6 Virginia Tech, who beats one of the better Big 12 teams, and destroys cupcakes Florida International and North Texas.

Certainly tougher?

Alabama loses no one on offense next year, and the key defensive players will be back. Penn State will have another reason to mourn on Sept. 11th.

Texas looks sluggish. Jury's still out on them. Everyone else has a loss already, mostly to less-than-impressive teams.

Never thought I'd say this, but with Miami's improvement, FSU annihilating BYU, and V-Tech edging Nebraska... I have to proclaim that the ACC is playing better than the Big 12.

Keep in mind the following: To win the SEC, it's likely that one of those schools has to beat all of the other three head-to-head. For a team like Alabama to win a national championship, they will have had to play and beat V-Tech, LSU, Ole Miss, Florida, and whoever they would face in the nat'l title game. That's five top-10 teams to get past for a title. And it's not like Tennessee and Auburn are going to be pushovers.

In comparison, what current top 10 team does Penn State have to beat to get to Pasadena? Just your Ohio State.

That pretty much illustrates why SEC fans resent it when Big Ten fans try to put their conference in the same class.

1. LOL @ ESPN hyping Notre Dame's matchup against Michigan State as a "season-defining game," and a "redemption for the Irish defense."

Wait... isn't Michigan State the team who lost to Central Michigan last week and now has a 1-2 record? And I suppose redemption is giving up 30 points to them and being lucky enough to take advantage of their QB's decision to gamble on a sure 3 points that would have tied the game at the end?

Let me state the obvious: As much as Irish fans are itching to go 11-1 or 10-2 and play in a BCS bowl... you should be praying to the Madonna that Weis is let go after a 7-5 season. Every win for your team this season amounts to a long-term loss. Even if you can't get Meyer... Gruden is just itching to get out of that MNF booth and do some coaching. The Irish could use the "Chuckie" attitude, instead of Weis' heavy breathing.


2. LOL @ Lame Kiffin for saying his plan "worked perfectly," in reference to his off-season smack-talk toward Urban and Florida. According to the boy-genius, it "took the pressure off" of his team... and kept them from being trounced.

See, Coach Einstein, that's the difference between Tennessee and Florida: You coached your guys to keep the score from being run up on them. In your shoes, Meyer would've tried anything and everything to win the friggin' game.


3. LOL @ USC's inability to beat an unranked Pac-10 opponent the week after winning a hyped-up game.

Seriously, Pete... like Sarkisian didn't know all about your willingness to relax against perceived inferior opponents... and like he didn't circle Sept. 19th on his calendar when he took the Washington job??? This time, there's no excuse for losing this game. I gave the Trojans the benefit of the doubt last year, but there's no way they deserve to be mentioned when everyone's jawing over the BCS title game at season's end.

4. LOL @ ------------------> Mormons!

No more BYU or Utah nat'l title hopes... but we'll still be stuck with Boise State all season.

This is why I believe none of them will survive unscathed. I know you agree that Boise will be unbeaten, and what's worse is I think they will be the only unbeaten. When the top ranked teams have there losses and to whom they lose will determine who plays Boise for the title. Who could have ever believed Boise in the NC game?! BTW I do not think the Big Ten is on par with the SEC and I have stated this repeatedly on here. I just think all the anti Big Ten rhetoric is trite and tiresome.

Not sure the latter is fair. They ran a hitch and go when it mattered - just couldn't complete the pass (turned out to be an INT).

I didn't see the Vols going all turtle on O. The run was working.

Now - he didn't pull out anything wacky on special teams.


Mainly - it was interesting to see the playcalling for UF when the game was tight. First time they actually had to call a play that mattered this year.

Did you see the Kiffin post-game conference? You could see right through his pseudo-criticisms of his team. In reality, he couldn't have been happier with the results. He was practically glowing. I can't imagine any other great coach being content with that loss, even if they were 30-point underdogs.
 
and War Eagle..! That was a hell of a come back by the Auburn Tigers!! How sad is it that they still aren't ranked in the AP despite beating 2 teams who won bowl games last year handily and a SEC opponent? Havent had a team stay within 11 points yet we're ranked lower than many teams with losses. Changes need to be made. Do AWAY with the preseason poll!

Wow... I can't believe I'm saying this, but... I agree with everything in your post minus the "War Eagle.":lol:

Preseason polls are absurd. If they started ranking teams this week from scratch, Auburn would be ranked much higher than #29. No way Penn State or Ole Miss would be @ 4 and 5. USC and Ohio State would be out of the top 15, and BYU wouldn't even be in the top 25. Houston would be ranked ahead of Oklahoma State... etc, etc, etc.

Great win for Auburn. I was worried during the first half when that Devine kid was running all over the place. The Tigers are very opportunistic, which should worry their upcoming opponents. LSU and Ole Miss's schedules just got a little more difficult.

It will be awesome if the Iron Bowl has two top 10 teams this season!

Just got back from Gainesville - hung out with my daughter a few days before and after game.

Yeah, hard fought game. You could really see how the Gators miss Harvin and Murphy against a good Tennessee defense. I much as I wanted to see Kiffin get creamed, it's still a "W" and the UF coaching staff will certainly make some adjustments.

In any event, Monte Kiffin's defense and Urban Meyer's offense should be something to watch over the next years.

penn state's SOS is weak, i will not deny that. But, IMO, a nat'l champ shouldn't play....CHARLESTON SOUTHERN to start a season.

but last year when oregon state upset USC, while pennstate beat oregon st...you still said USC is "the" team. now, they lose to WAsh, and they are chopped liver.....i don't understand your logic.

That's why the winner of the SEC Championship has been voted into NCG last 3 years with at least 1 loss (2 in the case of LSU). The people who matter (vote) know the difference between smoke and smokescreen especially when it comes to strength of schedule.

Remember it was only 3 years ago that the Big Ten was whining about an Ohio State - Michigan rematch in the NCG as if no other conference's team could make a game out of playing Ohio State. Of course one loss Florida was (barely?) voted in and destroyed the Buckeyes 41-14. If you remember, most didn't see it coming and few gave UF a chance, but that lopsided win - in contrast to UF's much more competitive SEC games that year - opened a lot of people's eyes. IMO, that game solidified the new SEC ascent (and Big Ten descent).

2006 Ohio State 24 #2 Texas 7, 2008 Capitol One Bowl Michigan 41 Florida 35, Mike Hart fumbles not once but twice on the goal line and yet Tebow Christ and the gang got beat. There are other games but I won't bother to post them because SEC fans have become so smug and glib that they will dismiss them anyways.

Ohio State-Texas had Colt McCoy in his 2nd start as a true freshman. Not exactly the biggest game. Go see how Texas finished that season too.

First off, Boise State beat OU in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. You're referring to the Outback Bowl, where Penn State beat a 9-4 Tennessee team.

Colossal win.

You're right... it's just us SEC guys on this particular forum. I've never heard an analyst, or sports writer, or broadcaster ever comment on how weak the Big Ten has become. Nope... just us AM guys.:rolleyes:

On Monday, Kiffin said he didn’t want to respond to Meyer’s comment. But asked whether he was worried about the flu also hitting Tennessee, he said: “I don’t know. I guess we’ll wait and after we’re not excited about a performance, we’ll tell you everybody was sick.”

“This offseason the commissioner made a big deal of renewing vows in terms of what we say about other teams, other coaches and other players” Kiffin said. “Obviously Urban feels he doesn’t need to follow that. We won’t say anything else.”


Personally I think this is good for recharging the rivalry and good for the SEC.
 
Hey here's a thought, if Miami beats V-Tech and then Oklahoma next week making it 4 wins vs top 25 teams how can they not be the #1 team in the nation? If you don't think so then what do you base your opinion on other than SEC nut hugging?
 
They would definitley be considered a top 5 in my book.

Its not looking good for us as I thought. No Floyd at receiver(out for season)...Clausen with turf toe. Hughes is still hurt. We're fixin' to see if Weis has depth.:think:

Yeah man it def looks like the luck of the Irish just ran out, you guys are banged up big time. I think the schedule is relatively light until USC correct?

JoePa used that flu excuse last saturday after the mediocre performance against temple. It was called a "lame" excuse by certain members. But when Lord Meyer says his boys have the flu, the world comes to a screeching hault.
