Anyone here own a Mac?

Just wondering if anyone else here uses Mac over Windows. A while ago I invested in a Macbook pro and it was the best decision I've made in a while. Anyone else?

i own a Big Mac :)

j/k

there some users here that own macs, but it seems that most of them use windows. i personally own several windows systems but my GF owns a mac, since she uses it for Graphic design

iMac and iBook. I am a complete Apple whore.

haha NICE, the new IMac's look so PIMP! I have a Mac mini I'll mess around with from time to time but it's so slow compared to my macbook. My cousin has a Tower and WOW that thing SMOKES! Cannot wait for leopard to be released!

Converted almost 10 years ago, the Macbook Pro is my latest & current one (love it). My daughter has an iBook, my ex-wife has a Mini, my brother has a 5-mac network @ his house, my sister has both a Powerbook G4 & an Intel iMac.

When I bought my first, I was the only Mac user I knew.

Since my old iPod is dying (a gold mini), I'm debating between replacing it w/ the 160gb Classic, or the oh-my-god 16gb Touch (both just released)....

haha the touch looks nice, but the memory on that 160gb is just INSANE. I'm wondering how long it would take me to fill a 160gb ipod, I'd have to start uploading a bunch of videos to that bad boy! I have a 30gb that's completely full, and a nano I use at the gym, trying to convince myself that I need a new Ipod so I can buy one of those haha. But wow sounds like you are more Apple crazy than I am, I havent had this pro very long but my next purchase is a new Imac!

I have Macs at work and PCs at home. I hate the Macs.

For me, Macs are like computers with training wheels. They're fine for people who don't know what they are doing or who just want to do the simple things that are already allowed by the programs. However, whenever I need to do something complicated (like fix a software interface glitch) it's just a giant pain in the ass because the Mac OS isn't designed to allow people to tinker under the hood. Moreover, I'm always encountering problems because the Mac software programs often have trouble with documents created by PCs (which the rest of the business world uses). The newest OS greatly mitigated this problem but it is still agitating when it happens. I have to apologize and ask that they just send the document to my home computer.

I've had Macs at work for ten years so have experience with all sorts of Mac tech and OS variations.

OTOH, when I needed a computer for my 4-year-old, I bought a used first generation iMac for $40 because it is easy to use and essentially a disposable computer (for the inevitable day when he breaks it).

sounds like you're running an old version of the OS on machines too old to run even that.

when I decided on my first mac, the main question I had was: 'given how much futzing around windows requires, how much time do I want to spend doing it for free?'

Answer: zero.

still, people like what they like, and like what they're used to, so watch me not try to talk you into (or out of) anything.

I'd need FOUR 160gb 'pods to hold my music (tons o' discs from years of working in radio & records), so I don't even bother w/ that. Oddly, I read this morning that the new Classics are S-L-O-W....
But wow sounds like you are more Apple crazy than I am....
Apple-crazy? *shrug* some might think that; is it "apple-crazy" to have made nearly 250k US over the last 5 years from my investment in AAPL? maybe.

Truth is, I've simply had good results with them...and so have the others in my family. My brother is a hot-shot PC guy, one of seven senior trouble-shooters for Sun Micro & long-time intel platformite; he was deeply impressed by my Powerbook G3 when I got it, and later on, when he found a conference room being cleaned out & noticed the old (pre-PPC) Macs being carried to the dumpster, he redirected the guys to his truck.

For the first month or more, he was on the phone to me almost every day: help, I need to do this!!! what do I do??? Every time, I'd direct him to the "Apple' menu, go to control panels...after a month of this, the calls had slowed down, but I got another one, and it went the same - but when I got to the part about here's where you look, etc, there was a long pause. A *very* long pause, after which he says to me, "youre trying to tell this could be easy, aren't you?"

He calls me fairly often, but not about his Macs - unless it's to brag.

FTR: I bought the Mini for my ex (to fulfill a promise in the waning days of the marriage); I bought the iBook for my daughter when she went of to college (it was what she wanted, after years of using Windows at her mom's, at school, at the library). My brother did all his on his own hook, my sister bought hers for her own reasons (don't know, didn't ask).

My first one I got in early '99; second one I got in late 2003; current one I got early last year.

I'm not a big Mac fan at all...OSX is slick but it from most benchmarks ive seen it actually performs worse than Windows XP on Intel hardware. Granted, that was testing some apps that werent Universal yet...

All in all, Im sure they're pretty much equal from a performance standpoint, especially now, but Apple would have you believe that OSX is the absolute best-performing OS on Intel Core2 hardware, and it isnt.

This is just one example of Apple's less-than-honest marketing practices...any person who knows a little about computer hardware can look over this page:

Invalid Link Removed

Statements like:

“The Mac is the only computer in the world that can run all the major operating systems, including Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Vista. With software like Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion you can even run them side by side”

and

“Intel Core 2 Duo processors are fast. As in really fast. But unlike any PC powered by Intel, the Mac runs Mac OS X — which is optimized to squeeze every bit of performance out of Intel’s engines”

Are outright lies, while every other point they make can easily be addressed by anyone who knows a little about how to configure a Windows OS to suit their individual needs.

Another case in point, the Mac Pro. Talk to anyone at Apple and they would have you believe that it is the be all, end all in computer performance. That its premium price more than justifies its industry standard reputation, superior speed, etc, etc, etc.

The Mac Pro is indeed a powerhouse of a machine, but take a look at this:

Two 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
8GB (4 x 2GB)
Mac Pro RAID Card
750GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
750GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (single-link DVI/dual-link DVI)
One 16x SuperDrive
Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse - U.S. English
Mac OS X - U.S. English
Total Cost: $7194

That's a well equipped Mac Pro. Now look at this parts list from NewEgg:

The custom build dual Xeon machine has faster disk drives, FAR greater upgrade potential, and the Mac is $3340 more expensive - for what? A pretty case, the apple logo and OSX? Im sure have a fully assembled PC and some support are worth something, but a $3340 premium?

PC building and performance tuning is a hobby of mine, so I'm naturally inclined to stick with a Windows based PC because they're so much more customizable and expandable, and less expensive.

I think OSX is a really nice OS, and I think Macs are really nice machines, but I dont think that the combination of the OS + hardware justifies their price premium. They are taking advantage of people who don't know much about computers, and using smug and pretentious marketing to make people believe that a mac is somehow superior to a windows PC in every way...when in fact the hardware is identical.

To make an analogy we can all identidy with: To me Apple is like a supplement company that charges 2x what a product is worth, and because of their giant 6-page ads in muscle magazines people who dont do research for themselves and find that there are better and/or less expensive ways to achieve the same results fall for it every time.

If Apple really wanted my business, they'd make OSX a piece of software that I can install on the hardware configuration of my choosing - like Microsoft does with Windows.

But they lock their software down and force you to buy their pretty cases and overpriced hardware, and to me that's just shameful.

I can run Ubuntu/Beryl on my machine if I want to, and then Ill have a UI that puts Vista AND OSX to shame...and Ill also have a really awesome looking OS with far less 3rd party software support than Windows.

Kind of like what Id get if I ran OSX, although Id be paying through the nose for it.

Hey I hear Muscletech makes a great Creatine too:)

On that note, if I had money in Apple I could give a crap about their marketing practices - they obviously work pretty damn well!

That is an old excuse, and maybe valid back in the 80's. Since then a lot has changed and Windows actually leads when it comes to any media creation.

That being said, I am Windows user. I use to hate working in a Mac lab when I was going to the Art Institute. Ever try to develop on a MAC? Sucks ass. We use to test on Macs, so if it ran fine on a Mac it would rock on a Windows based puter.

well she got that mac from her school they sold it to her with the complete Adobe packeage(illustrator, photoshop etc)

Nope, we upgrade the hardware every two years and the OS everytime there is an update. We're more or less cutting edge (got new hardware last year). As I said, the latest updates to OSX greatly mitigated the compatability problems that I used to experience with the first version of OSX and older OSs, but they're still there.

Some of the problems are of our own making. Because we couldn't find Mac software that would do some of the database things we needed, we had to have one custom made (for a stupid amount of money) and it REALLY has a hard time with anything not created on a Mac. Our email program (quickmail) is abysmal.

Mac's have always been in schools, as well as having deals for students, but that has nothing to do with being a Graphic Designer.

Well, I've never bought an Apple product (although I do own a free iPod), but I've been using a Mac-OS off and on since the '90s on my home computer....does that count? LoL

I was triple booting my homebuilt PC for a while there: Windows XP, OSX and Linux. Really only installed OSX for Final Cut Pro...and to p1ss off my Mac friend who said you can only run OSX on Macs.

Back in the old days, I was an Amiga whore. Ironically, running the MacOS on an Amiga was faster than on a Mac, lol. Both the Amiga and Mac used the Motorola 68000 chip for the CPU, but the Amiga's additional custom chips for graphics/sound/IO made it a tad faster. Some classes in university used Macs back then, and I just didn't want to leave my room, lol.

BTW - if you want a totally non-hassle/non-complicated installation - do not do what I did! LoL. Same goes if you don't want to look like a geek. Just buy a Mac.

If I were to ever buy a laptop, I'd buy a Mac - even though I'd mainly be using Windows. (Either bootcamp or parallels). For desktop...depends on my budget - but most likely I'd still go the custom PC build. Faster and cheaper. (But you have to know what you're doing. I specifically bought a motherboard with the ICH7R southbridge for ease of compatability, etc even though ICH8 is the better version.)

I own a Macbook Pro and I put that thing through hell, can't even get it to bog down. I'll be burning a DVD having reason and or protools open and sometimes surf the net.

Mac's are dope

I'm on an eMac right now. I agree with most of BV's statements and I realize what I have..but I still like my Mac a lot over previous PC's.

I have zero desire to tinker with my computer..I want to turn it on and go and that's what Macs do best. I've had this machine for nigh on 4 years without a glitch...no serious crashes, no meltdowns, no lost data, no hardware issues..nada. There are some compatibility problems with transfering documents between myself and PC users but I can overcome them 99% of the time by switching up which format I save in.

Surfing the net on Camino is decent but there is an occassional ad I can't see well because it doesn't format well.

So, if you want to tinker, expand, write program etcetera..go with PC for sure. If you want to turn the box on and have it work 99.9% of the time without having to call a tech geek..go Mac.

i have 3 imacs..still scratching my head in this day and age why ppeople are using windows pcs.

LOL Amiga whore...Me too!! I remember when Commodore folded i didnt even own a computer for like 2+ years, because I couldnt stomach anything else. I still have my A500 hooked up for games and stuff...Shadow of the Beast still kicks ass:)

I totally agree with that statement...the new Macs are *nice* machines weather they're running OSX or Windows. Getting into PC building is something you have to be passionate about or else its inherent tediousness could drive you bonkers, so its certainly not for everyone - I would certainly recommend a Mac, or other well build OEM PC to anyone that didnt want to deal with that kind of thing.

Sunder is right - you do have to really stay on top of things because new technology comes out at a ridiculous rate, and finding the perfect combo of components to suit your needs is a project in itself.

Why does't apple start selling its OS for use with PCs, and concentrate more on their other products and not their computers?. I have heard a lot of good things about OS X, and if the made it legal to run on pcs I think they may make a lot new customers.

Because OSX would crash and burn so badly if they did. It's not necessarily that Windows is written so poorly, it's more of a difficult issue to support such an immense selection of different hardware. (Windows would work fine if you were forced into only a select Microsoft approved hardware configurations).

OSX works with much fewer errors because it's mostly proprietary or known hardware it works with (945 chipset, etc. I believe Foxconn makes their motherboards right now - 1 company, not 20 different companies like PC's). Just on the Core 2 Duo platform alone, Windows has to be compatible with 945, P965, 975X, Nvida's 680i and AMD/ATI's RD600 chipsets.

And to be pro active - yes, OSX is based off a linux platform - and many people have a stable version of linux. But how many of those linux users had zero issues installing linux and getting it stable? They typically have to avoid certain video cards, etc, as there are usually driver issues. Linux is not known as a "works out of the box" type of OS. (Although it would be too if there was a limited and known selection of hardware).

I'm not bashing OSX, it's just that the reality of it's "stability" and "ease of use" is primarily because OSX is extremely limited in the hardware used. Same reason why most console game systems are so stable.

I'm not a Window fan either though, and I'm cheering for Apple to get a larger market share. The main program I specifically use is not available on OSX - so it's not like I had a choice in my OS...
I'm hoping anyone can challenge Micro$oft...monopolies are bad.

That's very true...and another reason why I think the Windows OS is impressive and prefer it, it works on anything. (well x86 based anyway...)

And competition is good! If it weren't for little AMD kicking ass for the past 4 years I doubt Intel would have been so motivated to come out with the Core2. And Microsoft wouldnt have been compelled to pretty up Vista if it werent for the growing success of OSX.

Apple makes some terrible business decisions that just appear arrogant to me...ie iPhone that can only use AT&T..man, that was just dumb. I would actually get one if it weren't for that..it makes a cool quasi-laptop.

Then all the bickering they do about keeping OSX off anything but Mac hardware is foolish. I understand the part about dedicated hardware and such, but it's still bad business. The cult of personality that Apple has cultivated will not always be able to save them from these bad decisions. Same with VW...lol.

Excellent point. This is why they Apple will always be second best. Propriatary anything just causes problems in my opinion and the only reason they keep it that way is to keep money in their pockets, and so they can charge you 10 times the price....

Yes, and also to stay alive. So many clone companies have went under in that cutthroat business - it's that niche they are in right now that keeps them somewhat afloat. Another company notorious for trying to enforce proprietary hardware is Sony, but they're doing a better job economically.

If OSX was released to all PC's, I would almost guarantee, unless the iPod division keeps them alive, Apple would declare bankruptcy. Why buy a buggy and often crashing OS (OSX) when you can have Windows? They'll both lock up on you, but at least there is a lot of applications available for Windows....and plus you probably never really paid for that copy of Windows anyways, lol.

Even if by a huge miracle OSX was actually stable on every combination of hardware out there now - and let's just say for sake of argument that OSX is actually a better OS than Windows too - it honestly doesn't mean a thing. The better product is not the one that always wins - it's marketing and backing.

NeXt - anyone remember them? Superior hardware and OS when they came out - dead.
BeOS - a much better OS...anyone ever even hear of it?
Heck, the Amiga hardware and OS was superior to Mac and PC in almost every single way in it's day. First OS to use true multitasking with far advanced visual and audio capabilities and memory management that PC's and Macs could not touch. Not only that, but I could run BOTH PC apps AND Mac apps...3 computers in 1 (I'm not going to count the Atari ST emulator, etc)
Marketing and pressure led to fewer application development, which was its downfall.

WordPerfect vs Word, Lotus 123 vs Excel, dBase vs Access...the financial power of Microsoft can overcome any better written software...or they'll just buy them or another competitor out and use their product, lol.

Betamax vs VHS. Why the heck would anyone use VHS?? The audio and video are inferior - yet VHS won for some reason.

To a lesser extent, there's the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray vs HD-VMD format battle. Anybody care to place any bets that the technologically superior format won't be the winner? Storage space, speed and even price don't matter - it's who backs it up (movies available, etc).

BTW - I very much agree on the stupidity of iPhone being exclusive to AT&T.

Totally agree, Sunder.

I miss WordPerfect and actually prefer a lot of things about Word over the Mac's word processing system..ie reveal codes! What's so hard about offering that?

The drop in price for the iPhone is a slap in the face to all the hardcore Mac lackies who forked out 600 bucks for it 2 months ago. I wasn't about to pay that kind of dough and I'm supremely happy I did not. If Mac drops their contract with the ATT exclusivicity..then I may reconsider. But then I will never get anything done anywhere because I will be playing with it..lol

There are plenty of 'hacks' out for the iPhone that will allow you to use it on any carrier (much to Apple and AT&T chagrin)

Steve Job's company when he 1st got ousted from Apple - those machines fetch a mint on Ebay today for their rarity:)

BeOS - a much better OS...anyone ever even hear of it?

It's still around, supported by a small enthusiast community...so is GEOS for that matter:)

Amiga's failure was mainly due to Commodore's mismanagement. I firmly believe that if that company's executives didnt have their heads up their collective asses, the Amiga would still be a viable platform today - and PC's would be that much more powerful because of it. That machine was *way* ahead of its time.

Excellent point. This is why they Apple will always be second best. Propriatary anything just causes problems in my opinion and the only reason they keep it that way is to keep money in their pockets, and so they can charge you 10 times the price....

When Apple was using PowerPC based CPUs, it really was proprietary hardware and from a computer enthusiast's perspective, made it a unique and interesting platform. I can't blame them for switching to Intel with the release of the Core2 architechture, but they still act as if their hardware has some exclusivity about it, and it doesnt. It's the same thing you can buy in a Dell or build yourself for hundreds less.

I know I keep *****ing about it, but I just cant get over the prices they're charging...$800 for an extra 2GB of DDR2 667 RAM?! And no choice on video cards...they stick you with a middle of the road ATI 2600 PRO GPU in a $2400 system? Unbelievable...

You'll hear people *****ing about the price of Windows all the time, but take a look at the markup on a Mac - that's what you're paying Apple's operating system.

Oh my...I'm definitely showing my age if I admit to using GEOS, lol. The C64 was my first computer. Ah, the memories.... :)
That was back in the day when my "socializing" was spending an evening at a friend's house and copying each other's software, lol. Bit Nibbler....can't remember the other names...took forever when we only had the single 1541 drive. I'm very afraid that I still remember the model #...

Commodore 64 was my first "home computer" also, thats what they called them those days. After that I had the Commodore 128 that you could switch C64 mode!. Shortly after that I had the Amiga. I really didn't get into the Amiga that much. I had a subscribtion to Ahoy! magazine and typed in thousands of lines of code, staying up all night to "de-bug" my game I typed in a BASIC from Ahoy! magazine!. I used to play Ultima 1, 2, and 3. I loved that game!. Also, M.U.L.E! and Karateka!....Don't forget Legend of the F.I.S.T!!!....These days I just can't get into gaming. For some reason it just doesn't seem as fun.

The only thing Apple I will touch is an iPod.
Mac's are great for the artists, but I'm an engineer. WTF am I gonna do with a Mac.

Just wondering if anyone else here uses Mac over Windows. A while ago I invested in a Macbook pro and it was the best decision I've made in a while. Anyone else?

Running OS X as my main OS now. Have my macbook (2.0ghz/2.0gb ram) running bootcamp w/ XP as well (had vista on, but took it off), in addition to running an XP virtual machine w/in OS X.

I love the computer, but at the same time I've definitely come to the conclusion OS X has been overrated.

Things I love most:
* Setting the corners of my screen to tile and show desktop. Super nice when working w/ lots of documents.
* Fast boot time.
* Fast sleep resume time.
* Install/Uninstall is as easy as copy paste.
* Intel based so I can run windows on it.

Things I don't like:
* overpriced
* Not much (if at all) more stable than Vista or XP IMHO

Yeah, its was like $200 more for a DVD burner and a $200 more for a 2GB RAM setup.

I use my macbook as a laptop only when I'm out my house. At home I have it hooked up to a 22" widescreen w/ keyboard & mouse and my new external DVD burner all hooked up to a USB hub. Also threw in 2GB ram for like $70.

With a student discount, and getting the "free ipod" (and selling it), my macbook + 2GB ram + DVD burner was maybe only $100 overpriced. If it wasn't for my student discount I wouldn't have purchased the macbook.

Student discount FTW, however without it, all of the upgrades are waaay too expensive!

Yeah, its was like $200 more for a DVD burner and a $200 more for a 2GB RAM setup.

Just bought a 2 month old one of these for half-price off someone who just found it too big for his purposes.

I must say I'm beginning to see his point (I had a hell of a time finding a laptop case big enough to hold it but I'm loving the dual video cards). Alienware costs about 1/3 too much for the tech because you're paying for the "cool" factor but I got it at a steep discount, plus my employer will reimburse $1k....so I've got a jacked-up Alienware 17 inch laptop for $500 out of pocket (does happy dance).

The upgrades are entirely ridiculous. And, the macbook pro is absolutely retarded expensive for what you [don't] get.
While I do enjoy my macbook pro, I'd say it's EASILY overpriced all things considered. Apple does essentially make the "coolest" products but sometimes it's really hard to justify the price tag.
