Slicin' and Dicin'

Sweet, and of course it is not all about the money, but I was curious. I will be curious to see if you notice a huge difference in quality of home grown over store bought. I wouldn't mind some egg layers but my wife would probably lose her mind if I tried that. We had neighbors a few doors over that had about 10 at one time.

It wont' always work out this way, but one reason we got 10 birds instead of 5 was Wilco had a deal. Buy a bag of feed and get 5 birds for free 😂

we are in a local co-op as well where we get organic chicken feed thats pretty high quality for equal to or less than store prices so I have a 50lb bag of that for my next batch but for my current 10 birds:

2 x $23 bags of feed will get them from start to finish I believe if I butcher at 7 weeks. I may need a bit more if I let them go to 8-9 weeks

View attachment 260016

so $46 / 10 = $4.60 per bird. You can add to that water if you want, but price is negligible. There is the cost of brooder, heat lamp, feeders and waterers, but we have had all those things for many years because we've been doing chicks for so long. I think we did have to get a new bulb this year ($12.99) but thats sitting over my wife's 5 new layer chicks.

If I get more Cornish Cross chicks they're $3.19ea

Definitely cheaper in the long run, and you know you’re getting clean fresh meat. I remember as a kid watching my Grandmother chopping the heads off and some of them doing the little dance. Just a part of being a kid raised around farms. Funny thing is we’re all animal lovers, but it was healthy to learn as a kid animals for meat are necessary. Of course our chickens are all layers, and by the time my wife names them there’s no hope in making them meat birds even if I wanted to.🤷🏻‍♂️

haha ours are the same way, when the girls get old and are probably not laying any more I have offered to put them on the grill and my wife always says no so we let the old layers live out their life until they die naturally then I take them to the train station. They are like pets. Every ounce of scrap food from our house and the neighbors house goes to the chickens. their poo creates fertilizer. If I make a whiskey mash of all corn, after it finishes fermenting I'll give a lot of that to the chickens (and the rest to the woods for the deer).

a lady in a meat birds group posted about how she is struggling with the idea of killing her birds and she thinks shes weak. I told her I think she's healthy. I've been duck hunting since I was 11 years old and I never "loved" killing animals. It was probably my love for animals that got me to harvest every scrap piece of meat off the carcas that I could, I just can't stand wasting a life. But I also have respect for the food chain and how the animal lived to give us nutrition.

I definitely think raising your own meat is a really good human experience. to tend to a baby animal until its time to take its life, you learn the anatomy of the animal and just develop this crazy respect for everything. the animals life, your life, etc. I'm biased, so I assume the meat and eggs taste better but they're mine so to me they already do! lol!

(however our eggs are thick and darker. we get really cheap tumeric and ginger at winco and supplement their water. I definitely 100% do believe your home grown eggs are way better than store bought if you can do it)

Oh yeah, there’s no doubt that fresh eggs and meat taste better. And fresh milk is better too…down here in the South the Old Timers would call fresh milk “sweet milk” because of the sweet flavor of fresh milk. Fresh butter tastes better too…. I remember watching my Grandmother churn butter by hand. Ha, I’m getting fat just thinking about those good old fresh butter biscuits, fresh eggs, bacon, and milk….just a different world.😍

By the way @Dustin07 I have to give you credit man. You are one of those sharks, you never stop moving, and it seems you are always doing something very productive. Not just spinning your wheels for activity sake. As much as we praise others on here for where they are super impressive. I just want to call out that you are absolutely in my group of people I consider to be outstanding examples in many ways. I just thought you should know that just you being you in your everyday life is inspiring.

Thanks man, that's mighty kind of you, I think it's probably more credit to my wife though cause I'm always trying to keep up with her

It is wild how much we can accomplish with some autistic focus and tech. It's crazy to me how much I have learned in the past few years while on the treadmill, from Spanish, to distillation, aquaponics, etc!

Wife was up sick with a bad cough so between midnight and 2am I put her in the shower for steam, which helped a ton, made her some chamomile tea with honey and lemon, had her pound a little NyQuil, and turned on the TV to keep her company. I threw a couple extra blankets on her trying to encourage a sweat fest but Everytime she started sweating she'd take them off lol. Either way the small things helped a lot. She slept great till morning and is at the DR now checking on whether or not she needs or wants an Rx. I'm a bit tired.

My boy came to visit me at lunch (his spring break) so I could show him the new building we are trying to move into. So I figured I'd let my fasting go today so he and I could have lunch together. Still kept it clean, just chicken on greens with no dressing.

Mostly went to the gym for the sauna cause I've been surrounded by sick people lately (knock on wood) but as long as I'm here and getting dressed anyways let's cardio!

Hope she gets to feeling better soon….great job taking care of her in her time of need….love is an action word.👍

Her boss has been fighting something for a couple weeks and in and out of dr for antibiotics so its starting to go around her office. She did get into the dr yesterday and they tested her for flu and covid, which she got pissed off about because she said she didn't authorize them for that, lol. She asked them what the plan was if she tested positive and what they'd rx then, they said 'nothing' which infuriated her more because she decided she was better off just staying home and slamming our home remedies since the drs didn't have a solution anyways! ha.

to be fair though they did at least give her something for her cough and she seemed much better last night, she slept through the night just fine and I'm guessing she's over the worst of it. she will be taking one more rest day (hopefully, if she can keep herself from going crazy) today.

I pulled something Sunday during my OHP so the last 2 nights finding a spot on the pillow for my stiff neck has kept me awake too 😂 but its already feeling better. Today is going to be touch and go for gym because I have a weird mid afternoon appt so when I get in I will try to make the most of what time I have today.

Mariners swept the 'stros. See you in Oct @gphagan1 ! Braves are looking good...

Yeah, those doctors don’t want to get that Norwegian blood boiling too much, or they may need a doctor themselves.

The Mariners are looking good….yeah, the Braves are looking like that 2023 team. The last two years they got derailed by injuries, so hopefully this year no major injuries. 🙏

I hope she feels better already! :)

I also hope that your trap / neck loosens up. If not how will you ever be able to do this again?

Must be an Astro fan.
Well he is from these parts! I don't know why but baseball bores me to death. So it doesn't bother me at all. ;)

Wife has been home sick past two days and in her truest form spent yesterday cooking up gourmet spaghetti sauce, so we had spaghetti with some great beef sauce, steamed veggies, etc. All in all seemed to work out ok, woke up at 188 this morning feeling a bit more energized and carbed up.

Shifting away from PSMF and whatnot to more balanced for a couple weeks to see how my body responds. I will probably use my lifting belt as my main indicator since I have reachieved that 4th hole leanness in waist measurement. I'll likely work to keep that in the near term more importantly than scale etc.

But 188-190lbs at this waist is a full 10lbs heavier than in the past so that sounds like decent progress from the bulk/cut cycles.

man todays lift was a good example of how motion creates motion.
6am I was chomping at the bit for today session, ready to go.
by the time I got there, feeling tired already, less motivated. but said go through the motions and it will kick in.
by my second set I was ready to push it.

Hard to say, I made a couple playoff games but missed the Series....

I saw the Astros play in the World Series back in 2021 versus the Braves in Houston. Was an incredible experience. Crowd was so energized. Want to say it was game 2 (maybe 3). We won the game, but ended up losing the Series that year.

We were actually nervous about that Series because we had went through so much to beat the Dodgers, and then we had to play the Astros, and I thought the Astros had a better team than the Dodgers that year. That had to be a cool experience for you. I’ve never got to go to a World Series game, but we did go see the Braves beat the Brewers in the playoffs that year. And the playoffs atmosphere is definitely ramped up compared to the regular season.😎

Dodgers are going to be a tough team this year too, I think. I figured M's sweeping the 'stros would be a tone setter and here we are giving it up to the Padres this week so IDK lol. I'm pretty excited about our team though, M's have a history of being in first place by the all star break then struggle bussing till fall so we'll see...

and yeah the playoffs were insane! a buddy of ours bought like 13 seats when our new park opened back in 1999 and ever since then he has kept a list of I think 20+ people that every spring buy up all the tickets with him (From him) so we have access to these really great seats but way way way below retail. we still paid an arm and a leg for play offs but when they were selling second hand for $4k I think we went for $400.

I remember the morning before I was going to a play off game my wife was watching the news and she's like: "Hey you and your dad could sell those tickets for $4000 and watch the game in the bar across the street" LOL! My mom told him the same thing and we both said, we've been waiting a long time to see a mariners playoff game, we're not going to miss this!

Think the Astros lost 3 pitchers to the IL during the series against the Mariners lol.

Yeah injuries are a killer to a good team. That’s what has cost the Braves the last 2 years.

so I really dislike Tarik Skubal because I think his personality on the field is pretty douchey, but this is one of the reasons I grew respect for him this year, when he bailed on the Classic to go train with his teammates. I thought that was a sign of a dedicated player who wanted to put his best foot forward for the team that's paying writing his check, not some exhibition game. (but I'm biased, I hate the baseball classic anyways)

Yep. I hate the baseball classic too, because I’m always afraid Acuna is going to get hurt. He has one gear….all out 100%.

Did things a little differently today to break the monotony of the past few months and play with squats + free weights more to see how the knee responds which generally has been much better.

A. My knee sleeves were tighter so maybe my legs haven't atrophied as much as I thought.

B. I felt a pop behind the knee/lower hamstring on my 280 rep. But it was a pop of relief like muscle fascia breaking up which would make sense cause I've felt for a while now the injury is hamstring based and not mechanical knee stuff.

C. I really thought I'd take a double or triple on that 300 but got a little over amped, absolutely buried it, then spent 5 minutes finishing the rep

All in all I feel like mobility is sufficiently recovered to take squats more seriously.

Off to the phone store to replace this brick. Yay.

Glad to hear your knee is doing better, and that you were able to do some squats, that’s great. I feel you on that scar tissue pop…. I was finally able to do more than just my rehab work on legs today. Just leg extensions and leg curls, but I had a pretty good bit of crackling going on from scar tissue myself, but it does feel good to be able to do something besides just bands.😎👍

Here’s hoping the knee keeps building this positive momentum for you! And nice work sticking out a heavy single - those are the ones that make your mind stronger.

I'm feeling really good today. I have had a couple of nights here and there the past month were a dull aching behind the knee would wake me up in the middle of the night and I'd be unable to find a position where my leg didn't just feel crazy sore in that spot. But they weren't repetitive nights, and hard to figure out the cause. So being able to put up some OK squats last night and have zero issues last night or this morning feels like a victory.

a 300lb single isn't impressive for me but ironically, a triple at 205 on front squats is actually pretty good. I think mentally, I'm ready to put together a real plan instead of just jumping on the leg press hamster wheel on repeat finally.

15 x BW (these felt awesome)

Lat pulldowns - neutral grip
10 x 145, 190
Pumpy!
15 x 130

Seated cable rows
2 x 15

Notes
Normally Friday is fasted cardio/PSMF but I wanted an extra upper pump day today for fun. So no psmf today although clean nutrition, chicken + rice + greens.

Even with a spotter I'm pretty sure 12 reps (my PR) was out of reach today but damn that 11 sure surprised me. Glad I added a day this week!

Back/lat work is a funny one. Some days I really have to switch movements/ROM to find a pump and other days I get a lat pump from bench.

Today neutral grip pulldowns was the ticket.

Saturday:

I'm wrekt. Hamstrings are in a severe state of DOMs

Honestly not even doing that much. Got up early to mow the lawn cause we are gonna turn part of it into a small bed for blue corn, pumpkins, and tobacco. Did that today, a few of those raised bed bricks from home Depot, unloaded a half yard of compost/garden soil for my wife's Dahlia bed and this new pumpkin / tobacco bed. Took care of the meat birds, worked on the truck and I'm absolutely exhausted. Hitting home Depot for a couple small irrigation parts to get zone 1 of 4 or 5 dialed in today. Gonna accomplish a lot less than I had planned but my wife has been fighting this cold/cough for about a week and a half and not having her at 100% to help around here really makes things much more difficult than I would have thought. It's funny how much married people share a brain. It's like a super computer that you don't realize runs on two servers until one of the servers goes down.

So all that said and done it's only 1:15pm and I'm already looking at the clock for the bell to ring. Home depot, Petco, then Safeway. I told her comfort food and a movie this afternoon so going to do salad and cauliflower crust pizza and crash on the couch once we get the garden irrigation done. Live to fight another day!

But holy hamstrings

That’s a good kind of tiredness….it’s always rewarding to get a lot accomplished around the house. Hopefully your wife will start feeling better. There’s no doubt that when you’re married you are one, and better together in a good marriage. I like the Supercomputer analogy.😎👍

Man it's so true. It's great when we are on the same page but I've really "missed" her this past week. I told her today the chaos we've created is definitely a two person job to maintain lol. It's exhausting but fulfilling.

Her garden project we've spent the last almost 8 months building is finally coming into fruition. I'm honestly really excited to be sitting on the deck this summer.

PXL_20260418_222757541.webp

I obviously still have a lot of clean up there to do. The hardware cloth will go under the deck to keep dogs and bunnies out of the garden. And I have the diy irrigation hose out there sunbathing to make it more flexible and figure out if I have enough. We are almost at the point where it's just "clean" and ready to be enjoyed.

That is really coming along and is looking great man!!!

Thanks my dudes! I have used those cheapo DIY irrigation systems from Home Depot for a while now, probably since pre-covid era and I think I'm getting better at it. added a few pieces... back flow regulator, filter, and a PSI regulator to control pressure into the whole system. its funny how fast these things add up when they're only like $1.67ea then next thing you know you're $150 on yet another weekend Home Depot run, lol.

But I did get the first row of beds set up really nicely with drip lines. using a couple extra elbow pieces on the main hose line instead of just letting the hose drape as it naturally does I think gives it a better "finished" look and adds some integrity, plus it keeps it in place so random hose loops aren't constantly trying to trip me, lol!

Butchered 3 chickens of our first 10 this weekend. I'm slowly culling the biggest ones between now and May 1 because I want all the meat birds gone before we go on vacation so the house sitter (our kids) don't have to deal with them. I kept one of the birds fully intact and brined like a turkey so we'll bake it tonight for dinner. The other two I breasted out into one bag (freezer) and in another bag wings and legs. The legs on cornish cross chickens are as big, if not bigger than the breasts!!. then a third bag for carcass, hearts, feet for the stock pot later.

Got the last 5 chicks, now at 5 weeks (layers, not meat birds) moved out to their "growout" brooder. and otherwise just sorta yard "tidying" weekend. I have a feeling we are in for a nasty summer tbh. there was a certain dryness in the heat this weekend (otherwise beautiful weather though) and already a lot of bugs....

Did not lift at all this weekend, gave myself a little extra rest and just focused on the house and downtime with the wife.

Last week's squats felt like I had turned a corner on ROM. At some point I did have some stiffness behind the knee but nothing I'm too concerned with so I'm putting more effort into repetition and rebuilding a base. I'm not going to accomplish a lot with 2 weeks till vacation but it's good practice.

Will hit cardio tonight.

Weight has been hanging at 188. So that feels good, whereas 190 was a hard plateau to break through, it's now become a bloated ceiling. Next two weeks will mostly be about enjoying the lifts, stabilizing calories, and refueling for a mid may push.

I realized if I'm gonna use leg press I need to document which one cause we have HS at one gym and star trac at another and they actually a bit different.

Changing this week up since I had a bonus day Friday and mostly recovery this weekend. This week is shaping up like:

Weds - cardio/active rest
Thurs - deads/back
Fri - arms

Then I have boys weekend at home while wife is at the beach so plan is some gaming, planet of the apes, gonna have the boy process a chicken AND BBQ it himself, and most likely a bro sesh Sunday focused around chest but maybe squats too if I can motivate him
