Price of whey has skyrocketed recently

5 lbs for 70-95 $ is what I see . Few months ago was getting 5 lbs isolate for 55-60 $ on amazon

Is it against the rules to ask are their any great deals on isolate are?

geez 2012 on here, was getting Gasparis myofusion 100$ for 10 lbs isolate.

From what I've heard, the prices are starting to go back down but the prices you see it sold at now would reflect what it was when it was made, so I'd expect them to be up for awhile.

It's been a combination of things too though - the increases in shipping prices have made everything go up and effect things like protein more than a lot of other things. And even the containers, I remember when a 5 lb. why tub would cost .75 cents and now you're looking at a couple dollars at times just to get the containers - and then shipping charges are over double on plastics compared to what they used to be.

We had been planning to make one back about 10 months ago. Within a month, the price of the raws went up to almost double what they were when we originally had it quoted and that's why we decided to wait. I want us to do a protein, but didn't want to get into it when prices were through the roof like that. Figured best to just wait until they come back down.

Honestly, 70.00 for a 5 lb. isolate is really good based on what it would have costed to make one this year.

I have several food allergies so I drink more of my protein intake through food than most people do, and its been brutal this year.

The best deal that I've found lately for a brand I actually trust has been Allmax IsoFlex at DPS. It's going for 69.95 to 79.95 depending on the flavor.

In the 2012 you could find a 2br apartment we're I live for 1200/month. Those same 2br's go for 2000-2500/month now

#inflation :( Price of everything is going up! except costco hot dogs!

Recently? Are you new to buying whey? They went up 3.5 years ago. This didn’t just happen lol

Whey protein prices fluctuate a lot.

They went up a lot during the pandemic, but they did come back down.

Then last year in Oct/November they went up again bigtime and were very high through the first half of this year.

I definitely agree that they went up and never went back down to what they were, but they have been up again higher since last fall. We had talked a lot on here about doing a protein and that's why we didn't - bc I jinxed that. No kidding, within 2 weeks of when I approved a WPI flavor sample, the price to produce the product went up by 70% :ROFLMAO:

Bro prices went up 3.5 years ago and they been the same pretty much since they went up 3.5 years ago lol. Occasionally companies will throw out these BS fake sales of 10% or 20% cause people ain’t spending money so they need to drop prices to make it more intriguing .

I picked up some new Ghost whey a few weeks ago for $23 on amazon and it was so good I went back to buy more and it was $45 lol. to say I was butt hurt is to put it lightly.

my step daughter asked for recommendations on protein powder so she and her boyfriend could get more protein in economically and I said honestly go with your mom and buy chicken with her cause it's cheaper per g of protein.

I still love my evening protein shake/pudding treat but the way my wife buys chicken it's actually cheaper gram for gram.

Bro that’s got nothing to do with the price of whey. Thats strictly amazon and I was talking to my wife about this last week. There qeeew a few supplements I bought of amazon from SolRay. One cost 18.99 and the other 27.99. I bought them multiple times at this price then suddenly went back months later and the prices were jacked up by 15-20$ each. Amazon does that when they see you constantly buy somehting they jack the price up figuring no matter you will buy it. But if you buy off ghost site most you’ll see is sale prices or the same prices that’s from my experience atleast. I haven’t seen any increase in prices on whey in years just companies pushing their phony “ sale” prices

But yeah protein powder prices are insane. I remeber when a 5 lb jug of ON was like 50$ now it’s like 80-90$ maybe more. It’s fn insane bro. I really don’t even drink protein powder I get all my protein through food and maybe have 1 shake a day with dinner for some extra protein that’s about it. Some weeks on end I don’t drink shakes of any kind at all

The person who posted this thread is a respected member who has posted on AM since 2004. He asked a question because he noticed protein prices had went up again in recent months. He gave detailed pricing in his post. I replied to his post and to his point about it going up and explained why, and let him know the best price that I knew of on protein at the moment.

One of the brands that I use a lot of myself was 49.99 pre-pandemic, went up to over 100.00 for a 5 lb. during the pandemic, then had went back down to around 59.99 to 64.99 and is now back up to 69.99 to 79.99 in the last few months.

I explained the why part of this to anyone that was interested in learning about it. For anyone that isn't, there's no reason to read my posts about it, but also no reason to try to argue with me about it.

I'm not going to argue with or debate anyone on protein prices, or the prices of any raw materials.

I work in the industry and deal with raw material prices every day of my life.

I've discussed in this thread the raw materials costs and the factors that influence what protein sells for.

I explained in detail in this thread about the up and down trends of protein prices and even detailed how we had planned to do a protein last year bc protein prices had been down to their lowest costs since the pandemic and from the time of getting a finished product quote to the time of getting flavor samples approved that the price went up again by about 70%.

There was a whole thread about that at the time, and it was discussed openly about the pricing going up then - and I'm not the only company owner that discussed it and let everyone know then that prices were getting ready to go up again on it.

You are free to criticize companies for offering sale prices on protein if that's the way you view it, but a lot of times that's when the prices come down and they buy batches that are lower cost and they pass the savings along to consumers as a sale price - because they don't want to change their actual retail price and then have to increase it again. So it just makes more sense to present it as a sale.

Anabolic Minds has always been known as a more science minded forum and a place where people like to learn about more in depth things in the industry. Most people come here to learn about supplements and ask questions, and they appreciate the insight that people that work in the industry give them on things like this.

Its the same price direct on their website. they got me with a low price and now I'm hooked, lol.
That is shocking man. Cause usually I find amazon to always be higher in price or at times equivalent to the company site. Ghost protein is great man the chips ahoy is so damn good lol

A lot of the big brands will do special sales like that on Amazon now, sometimes even loss leader deals bc a big influx of sales related to them will help their rankings and some will do it hoping to get extra reviews.

This is typically done on things that would taste very good to get you hooked hoping you'll continue to buy at regular price. But even if you don't, they got the boost in the Amazon algorithm.

I can't do that one bc I'm allergic to gluten but I've heard it tastes great.

When we do a protein, that's one thing I really want to do is to do some flavors that people that can't eat gluten normally wouldn't be able to eat and do them gluten free so that they can.

That is one that I wish I could try but I can't bc of my allergies.

My consolation prize is that at least Chips Ahoy makes gluten free Chips Ahoy now so have had a few shakes here and there where I break them up and add to other flavors of shakes haha.

Well Ghost im not sure how great their quality is but I’m positive to say they have probably the best tasting protein powder out there.
I was just gonna say get a food processor and grind them up and add them to let’s say vanilla powder should taste just like chips ahoy even maybe add them to chocolate protein powder probably just as delicious. But yeah man we both have to many issues that affect for enjoying certain things but we always make it work

I trust Ghost as far as their quality. I wouldn't be able to use it regularly anyway though bc I'm one of the people that can drink WPI but whey concentrate bothers my stomach. It's weird bc dairy doesn't bother me at all, only whey protein concentrate in large amounts. So I stick to WPI or WPI and Micellar Casein.

I took a container of the gluten free Chips Ahoy and put them in a ziplock and took a kitchen hammer to it and turned it into crumbs. I've been mixing it in all sorts of stuff and its great, so I can imagine the real ones would be too like in the Ghost protein.

I wanted to try their strawberry shortcake but it has gluten too. Haven't figured out a way to make that one as a homemade version yet, but going to try to when I have the time to try and figure it out.

That's one thing about us doing a protein - we held off bc of the pricing having gone up on it, but one of the things I was most excited about was trying to offer some great flavors and making things allergen free for people that usually wouldn't be.

Why you crazy SOB.

I am going to try that haha. I am using an egg protein right now that tastes like what I imagine is similar to a horses arse. Darn near puke every time I drink it haha, but drink it I do! Thanks for the tip!

I have so many food allergies that I drink more of my protein through shakes that most people, so I get creative haha.

I haven't tried straight egg protein in years, but never liked the flavor of it. I always do WPI or WPI/Micellar.

So why not make an allergen free gluten free. I’d like to say it would be a big seller. I also think it would be costly to make. Then to try and turn profit you’d probably be stuck charging an arm and a leg for it

That's been the plan with the protein.

Anything we do will be gluten free.

It wouldn't be completely allergen free bc since whey is from dairy, there will be a milk allergen listed, but it will be WPI, not concentrate, which is very minimal lactose.

There will be no soy protein. The original plan was there to be no soy at all, not even soy lecithin, but there is a massive sunflower lecithin shortage so it may have soy lecithin in it - which is fine though bc most people allergic to soy protein can have soy lecithin with no problem.

And any of the inclusions flavors we do will be gluten free.

When was the last time you had a Costco hotdog? 🌭. I hope you weren’t sweating when eating it lol

Its been awhile. I think I've actually only had one in my life but always see the price of it when I go to Costco :)

I’d be all in for this. Being I got colitis my stomach does handle whey well for the most part but sometimes certain whey can mess me up and give me a lot of gas due to the dairy. So a lactose free would be awesome All sounds like a great idea and a win to me

I gave up on daily shakes and cooking my own protein desserts at some point, maybe 2019-ish. I remember being satisfied with a 5 lb tub around the $50 mark.

I did keep and accelerate a protein bar habit. I feel that prices there have gone up but not quite as bad. When I first got into Quest bars in 2014-2015, it seemed like $2 / bar was the sweet spot. Many flavors on Amazon still come in around or slightly under that today (albeit with subscriptions and the 5% back on Prime Visa). Costco brand bars are back down to $1 a piece. Ghost protein at list price is close to $1.75 for a similar amount of protein. Am I missing something? Are the bars are stuffed with cheap filler now?

Not to derail the conversation too much but it is sorta crazy to think about how much life has changed since 2019. My wife and I talk about how much "expendable" income has changed DRASTICALLY without wages changing. Just cost of living is so incredibly high. I drive about 3,000 miles/month. from low fuel prices to peak prices (especially since I'm in WA state) that has added up to $600/month to my fuel bill. I know everyone is seeing it but sometimes you forget about how drastically things have changed with the inflation/shortages etc. Our prop taxes have gone up nearly the same per month and everyone I know has seen their rents or property taxes go up to match that. really puts a ding in the extra spending money!

I know, I actually went and downloaded the Ghost app and signed up for alerts just in case they have some awesome protein sale. I mean, I can always make bargain basement chocolate + a little powdered PB work just fine but those ghost flavors are a real treat.

Rises in cost have been kicking everyone's booty - People don't seem to realize this hits companies really hard too. all our costs have ballooned so much...from material to logistics to labor, etc. I know I've really struggled not to raise prices...pretty much everything has stayed the same.

I can only speak for myself, but there's been a lot of sacrifice to keep prices steady for you guys. I know you all are feeling the squeeze and done everything possible to avoid price increases...and we haven't chopped a single profile - like so many companies have done...they haven't raised prices, but they chopped their ingredients.

I had a few customers really come down on us after the first couple years of inflation "why is this price increasing?", "can you give me a break down for justification to the price increase?" I was like..................................... well.......... have you been living under a rock the past couple years? what's your grocery bill look like right now?

it's definitely across the board at this point. Funny thing is my wife and I have cut so many extra cirricular expenses out of our life, the one thing we haven't cut back on is supplements and gym bills 😅😅🤘

It's two-fold I think.

1) I do think that the quality of a lot of bars has come down - in the sense that they used to be more on the high protein, low carb, low fat side - now, they're more moderate protein and have carbs or fats with them which make them easier to flavor. But the average protein is so low now that you'd have to eat 2 of them to equal some of the older bars.

2) The average bar is so much smaller now, which is one way they've cut costs.

I have food allergies so I have to avoid gluten and soy protein, and sugar alcohols hurt my stomach at more than 1 or 2 grams, so its hard for me to find bars that I can eat and that have the nutritional profile I want.

I never see these talked about, but for anyone looking for a good clean protein bar, these are really good.

I do think prices aren’t as crazy if you actually look at it versus various other food sources though, just depends.

Definitely agree.

Prices on whey have definitely gone up, but if compared to the price of equivalent protein intake through food, its not nearly as bad as it seems, because prices have gone up so much on everything.

I’ve found myself purchasing premade RTD bottles more lately even though it’s not always as economical, but the convenience works for me when I’m training twice a day and would prefer liquid meals lately.

I've had people tell me questionable things about mercury content in the muscle milk product etc, but I have more than once had my wife grab one of the 24 packs of the muscle milk light RTD cases from Costco. The convenience factor is high... being able to toss one in the gym bag and often just drink it intra or towards the end of the workout and the price/gram of protein is pretty dang good.

yeah the only "real" food I really know of in our region that seems to be better per g of protein is chicken. But that is also cause my wife is a masterful shopper and gets our chicken breasts dirt dirt cheap. If a person doesn't care much about additives or fat content I don't think there is a single way on earth to get more real protein in you than a $5 costco rotisserie though. We have carved them up many times on a sunday and had plenty of meat left over for a couple days of meal prep.

I wouldn't worry about that at all. They're a big company so they're a target for some lawyers and CA has that prop 65 thing where they say all sorts of things are harmful that don't translate into real life and real dosages.

The best deal that I've found lately for a brand I actually trust has been Allmax IsoFlex at DPS. It's going for 69.95 to 79.95 depending on the flavor.

Sweet . DPS has been good to me since way back when first used SNS Mohn back in 2004, first hormone cycle ever . Sns has kept strong though all these years and I'm glad. You work for an amazing company.

I freaked out when I lost 1600 $ bc I was hacked and ignorantly let someone into work account, they pretended to be from Doordash where I worked over 1000.00 worth, plus gas, about 1600$ and have not been paid for it , where someone got into dd account bank account to a dasherdirect card . If account ever gets hacked , check your payout method asap

Been using a mostly concentrate blend at other times when isolate isnt required and may feel some stomach discomfort but difficult to tell bc on doxycyline bc of cystic acne so maybe body has changed since in college in 2004-2006, when had to switch to isolate in morning or would have intense stomach discomfort. The body is does change

It's crazy how much they cost. Overall grocery bill in general is a lot of more expensive than just a few years ago.

Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate that.

I miss MOHN. That was my favorite ph of all time for me.

Anyone have any recommendations for a whey that uses minimal or no: artificial colors, artificial flavors, gums, artificial sweeteners, etc???

And/or grassfed whey?

Hard to know which companies to trust or sometimes where to start looking. Just hoping someone has recommendations to share.

Been using Muscle feast for yrs as it’s the cleanest I can find.
I guess I've never come across this brand before. Looks like it fits the bill of what I'm looking for. Definitely pay the premium. Any flavors to stay away from? I'm pretty much ok staying with chocolate but it would be nice to change it up.

I did pretty easily find a 25% off coupon code online. That def helps with price!
