in the 70s and 80s companies paid for otj training..more or less apprenticeship training--it's still available to those who are willing to do some manual labor to reach goals.
back in the day we weren't afraid of manual labor.
Other jobs existed, I.e. fast food and white collar jobs which paid a higher starting rate comparatively than they do now.
It's not people having unrealistic demands, they are simply being asked to get paid in accordance to what they are worth.
