So while I don't disagree that individuals need to take more personal responsibility and care for others more - I am not sure the government's role is so clear cut.
I mean, if the government can start making calls on contagious diseases, where are the lines? If you get the flu do you have to stay home? Because that may be a risk factor to some people. What if you are symtpomless and pass some disease to someone? Can the government take your freedoms because you are sick, like sending lepers to an island?
Does it become a crime to spread disease? If you are asymptomatic and unknowledgable and thus have no malice aforethought can it still be criminal?
And sure, obesity isn't contagious, but it is a huge cost to society and shifts costs from the person responsible onto others when you talk government Healthcare and insurance, etc. I mean, obesity caused heart attacks and strokes regularly occupy hospital beds that slow down treatment for other emergencies, and statins, ace inhibitors, etc. Are a huge cost to insurance companies because of obesity.
Not trying to argue here...just ask some legit questions that I find difficult to answer and draw the line on. I personally think from a personal level it is an easy choice to sacrifice for others...but it is not the governments role to make that decision for me.
The irony is most big government people will say it isn't ok for the government to prevent a woman from killing a baby, but they are fine allowing the government to tell people they cannot spread disease. It certainly is not a simple world.
