If it's up to me, we give the social workers some amount of self defense training and send an armed officer along with them in case it does get ugly. You agree that police aren't trained to deal with mental health situations, so let's give them some back up just in a slightly different way than usual.

Many police agencies already do this. The officers go to the call first and make the scene safe. Then they request a social worker respond if applicable. The social workers have the power to issue a WI 5150 hold as well.

have you actually talked to any social workers or police officers to get their input on this?

from what i understand social workers are already overwhelmed with case loads?


it could be that social workers want no part of putting their necks on the line considering how dangerous these situations are?

Oh...yeah, I dont like that...unless the police have them stay back at the car until the scene is safe. A dead social worker is not effective for combating mental ilneas....

I have. They are overwhelmed, you're right about that but those I've spoken to support the idea but they need a budget for more hiring both in general and especially if they were to take on more responsibility. I've also read that these opinions are unique to the relatively few people I've personally spoken to/corresponded with.

so, you are of the opinion that social workers are down with being 1st responders enforcing gun violation laws?

i can't see recruitment going well for hiring social workers when they are told they will be acting as unarmed law enforcement, lol.

I would imagine the threshold would be much higher than simply just being sad. The idea is to reduce risk, not eliminate it, so you target groups that are most at risk - I.e. felons.

Under federal law it is unlawful to sell or otherwise dispose of a firearm to someone who has been diagnosed as mental defective or committed to an institution. Mental defective is defined as:

A determination by a court, board, commission or other lawful authority that a person, as a result of a marked sub normal intelligence, mental illness, incompetency or condition:

1) is a danger to themselves or others
2) lacks the mental capacity to contract or manage own affairs
3)includes the findings of a court that a person is deemed insane through a criminal proceeding
4) those found unfit to stand trial or found not guilty by reason of lack of mental responsibility.

So that already covers quite a large base. As with most law, the people are deemed mental fit until proven otherwise. So imagine if their was a screening process that filtered that out. The way you guys might see it though is that they have the right to bear arms until that right is taken away, so it would be unconstitutional to screen them in the first instance. I can see that argument as well.

That's the difference between a right and a privilege. A priviledge is like a driving licence, you have to prove you are capable before being allowed to drive on the road. A right is something you are born allowed to do, until it is taken away.

i doubt there is much left to save in portland...it's really a shame. in 2018 portland area tourism generated $5.8 Billion in direct spending---i guess they can kiss that money good-bye?
 
the execution of lezmond mitchell is scheduled for 6pm, 30 minutes from now. i had expected a larger protest since the navajo nation were against mitchell's execution, but as far as i could tell there were only a handful of protesters-local news reports the number at 30.

just as with the previous executed prisoners mitchell's crime involved murder of a child, along with the 13 year old girls grandmother-both were killed then decapitated.

mayor bowser stated that DC residents would not be 'bullied out of living their everyday lives'

i think it is about time democrats started speaking out on this kind of 'inappropriate behavior' that has been going on since these 'mostly peaceful' protests started...thank you mayor bowser, hopefully you have set an example other democrats will follow.

In NY all you need is a school teacher to say something and a judge sends police and takes guns away from the family without any due process. Its guilty until proven innocent rather than innocent until proven guilty. They are called "red flag" laws. It can be something as simple as a kid drawing a sketching of a gun in his notepad.

So the problem is they can grab your guns simply for suspecting there is any mental illness or any other reason such as making a stupid comment on social media, anything that suspects your a threat simply by someone filing a complaint your done until you spend thousands on a lawyer to help prove your ok.

The term "the people are deemed mental fit until proven otherwise" in new york is really anyone can be un-mentally fit without proving it, as long as someone files a complaint say buh buy 2A without proper due processes guaranteed to us by the US Constitution.

My whole issue with your post is you made it out that a .22 is worse than a semi auto. That’s an asinine comparison. A semi auto has nothing to do with the effectiveness of caliber size. The first one I clicked on was the Anne Anne Kindergarten stabbing in Hong Kong in 1982. A man killed his mother and sister, then went to the school and stabbed 34 kindergarteners. That’s just a sick individual that needs a bullet to the head.

I looked those up, and casualties are low. That's the point I'm making. Any kind of attack if feasible, but there shouldnt really be any argument that if you want to inflict the most harm with a minimal amount of planning, you use a firearm.

That doesn't make firearms bad, it's just a statement of fact.

Again the same arguments are being presented; unless you cant stop all murders, there shouldnt be any laws at all.

If China wanted to invade NZ, they would absolutely annihilate us. Their active military is half our population and they have ICBMs and Nuclear weapons. I dont see any NZer using that argument as a need to own a firearm. The chance of that happening is low, and if it does then were screwed anyway. We're a peace keeping nation without any real airforce lol. No fighter jets, and a few old cruisers for a Navy.

What if scenarios mean nothing to me. Any body can make up any far fetched scenario in order to try prove a point. What if China, Russia and Iran decided to nuke you? They could. Then what?

The first guy he shot (and killed) threw a molotov cocktail at the shooter as the shooter was running from him seconds before he was shot. I dont blame the guy for shooting that guy. With that said, I most definitely dont want a bunch of 17 year olds with semi auto rifles out self “patrolling” the streets with zero guidance other than their underdeveloped frontal lobes.
