Anyone worried if Corona virus keeps spreading the gyms will shut down?

I wish they went up to 200 each man!! They are 200 pounds when you combine BOTH of them together and they can be adjusted to as small at total of 10 pounds. 200 pounds is the maximum I could find from any manufacturer.
That's still very very solid, my man. 200 lbs between two DB's is still mean stuff.

I have a bit of stuff and more on the way. It's all old stuff in a dungeon of a basement but coming together nicely. 300lbs of plates, plus some extra chains and bands, couple dumbells from 20-35, couple cables and a treadmill.

I will be making some heavier dumbbells out of concrete and rebar. And some Farmer Walk things too. Also got a old tractor tire from my buddies junk yard on the way

This. Plus adjustable dumbbells are always a little more “awkward,” and you always want to be a little more careful with them, so you tend to do your reps a little slower and more controlled, which makes them feel a bit heavier.

Well, the problem is even if you dont full blown "get it" you could still have it and not even know. This means you could still pass it on even if you dont have symptoms
Can only do as much as I can control (act as if I know I have the virus by practicing social distancing , avoid going out for unnecessary trip,, wash hands constantly, use hand sanitizer) and just trust God with the rest. Not going to worry pointlessly or freak out about things such as “Oh no I MAY have the virus and have no symptoms”. Regardless of if there is a chance this is true, it would serve no helpful purpose to think this way and the probability is I DONT have the virus which is why the government is only testing those with symptoms. Going around worrying “I may have the virus and not have any symptoms” only leads to negative thoughts, not positive ones.

Ya I noticed they are more awkward first day using them and I have to use less weights than I normally do to control them safely. Do you think it is safe to perform behind the head dumbell tricep extensions with adjustable dumbbells? The dumbbells are the kind you add plates to and use a fastener to tighten. They are so long to enable all the plates to fit on them I worry about the dumbell somehow swinging behind my head and hitting it! Would you recommend performing the exercise with extreme caution or do you think I should avoid it all together to be safe and just do kickbacks instead?

So I work for a retailer connected to a gym in the uk. The gym has closed but my store remains open for the time being. The gym manager is giving me a set of keys as I will need to check the place is secure from time to time over the next two to three months. He's like "use the gym as much as you want"...

Also close grip presses from the floor work great with dumbbells. Keep elbows tight in by your side when lowered. If you find that overhead extensions are too risky get one loaded up dumbbell and lie across a double bed on your back, extend your arms to 45 degrees up and back and do extensions this way. You. An lower over the edge of the bed so the weight is lower than your head and only raise to the 45 degree angle not straight up. You can get away with lighter weight doing this and still get great results.

Are those lawnmower wheels added to the end of those long dumbells ?!?! :cool:
Haha, now I see it! I actually really like the plates with the rubber ends. The big ones are 10s, and the end ones are 5s. I also have 2.5s. Having the largest diameter plate be rubberized really makes putting them down a lot quieter and safer. They’re also not completely circular, so they don’t roll too much, although they can if you need them to.

This should be the last concern. For us who have been working out for years there is a thing called muscle memory.

keep doing pullups, pushups, dips, bodyweight rows...if you have some weights great. You will lose hardly anything so IF we get out of this (wont matter if we dont of course) you will be back on track very fast.

And besides, a short 6-8 week cycle will get me looking juicy again if my physique deteriorates too much for my liking 😂😂
Exactly right. But a lot of people don't know this.

If they are star locks, I would use your judgement. If they are any other type, I would avoid any movement that puts pressure on the collars or has gravity pushing against the collars.

I guess I am lucky. My parents live 5 minutes away from me and have a 1500 sq. Ft. Basement they have FULL of junk. I managed to carve out about 400 sq. Ft. Of that basement for a gym as a teenager and it is the only place that is even remotely organised in their basement. Haha.

I have a power cage, about 1,000 pounds of plates, a couple Olympic barbells, Olympic dumbbells, star lock dumbbells, a lat pull down machine, leg press machine, adjustable bench with keg extension and preacher curl attachments, hyper extension bench, a heavy bag/speedbag stand....abiut all I could ask for.

If I had a bigger basement it would be nicer a my house, but I guess working out at your parent's house at 40 isn't quite as bad as living there.

I just did my first ever CrossFit workout. Buddy of mine got to borrow some barbells, bumpers, dumbells and kettles from his gym that closed down. So he set up a workout in his driveway. Felt good but god damn that wrecked me. It’s about 90 degrees where I am and I don’t usually go over 5 reps haha. I’m gonna keep with it though because I love lifting weights

Yeah **** got real in the Uk over the weekend.
Had to close both my gyms Friday night. Took 500lbs weights, a bar, set of db’s, a bench and a trx.

loaned the rest of the moveable stuff out to my members (we’ll be closed 3 months at least)

although I’d probably be allowed to train there myself a full lockdown is only days away and my kids are now being homeschooled by me (wife’s a doctor) so I’m just grabbing an hour when I can.

had to order some squat stands as dismantling the racks at the gym was too big a pain but supplier now saying they might be able to fulfil the order so we’ll see.

enjoying the challenge of training with limited equipment but my garage is full of stuff so feels pretty enclosed, hoping to improve the space over the next week or so.

one thing I will say is that you should plan for this to be long term, very possibly the rest of this year. Full lockdown is the only thing that works on this virus at the moment and whilst China has done well they’ve only just lifted restrictions - if it surges there again they’ll shut down again quick.

I think we’ll see some restrictions lifted after 3 months but gyms may be deemed too high risk.

I don’t see the majority of the American public putting up with this for more than 3 weeks. If this continues, the economy is going to crumble and people won’t be able to just literally stay at home. Things could get very messy here. Hope I am wrong but this is what I see happening if this continues.

We (Americans) have very little discipline as a whole .... And a big sense of self-entitlement (above the interests, or well-being of others).

I just can't help but find this funny. While you are probably on the mark, If Americans are not disciplined, then my vocabulary fails me to describe my people. However, It's been fun discovering how workouts at home can work. I am so comfortable with the situation right now that I no longer care if the gyms open up again (a big change).

And if this is so serious, then, I don't see why a country like America can't build a bajillion hospitals/medical facilities in a month or two. No reason for strict quarantines of this level if there are adequate facilities. A very viable option imo,

This is the current mind set: "I shouldn't have to be inconvenienced. If a whole lot of other people would go out and do TONS and TONS of stuff ...
I would be able to go on with my life the way I want to."

You drastically underestimate how fast this can spread (how many people it can infect), and just how fast and easy it is to build actual “hospitals” that can adequately treat potentially severe cases. Please don’t take this the wrong way, but do you have any background in the medical and/or engineering fields?

Gyms are going to suffer during and after this. I posted earlier about a lot of people probably going to just give up going to the gym. And I am sure many people are trying to cancel their memberships right now.

Good luck getting a refund from LA Fitness.
I met with them about a membership I get reimbursed partially for from work and walked out.

They're grimy.
Then I read horror stories about people wanting to cancel their memberships and solidified my feelings.

Yeah they managed to Bill me for this months dues
Even though I only had access for two weeks

I emailed them saying if they billed me again next month they hear from my lawyer

They sent out a member states wide email saying they wouldn’t bill for next month so idk

It has nothing to do with being around people as it is the fact that I’m surrounded by tons of equipment that I can use. I think I took that for granted. Making do with what I have but this sucks. Also there’s no way gyms are opening April 1. I hope people don’t actually believe that. They will be closed much longer than that

Also there’s no way gyms are opening April 1. I hope people don’t actually believe that. They will be closed much longer than that
I feel the same way. I'm getting some better resistance bands tomorrow (Undersun) but I'm just not as motivated. I'm also taking a break from stims, but I might need to get back on soon. I also don't feel the need to purchase any supplements right now. But I also need to watch how I am spending my money. Supplements just aren't that important right now. Nothing is stopping the bills I need to pay (mortgage, student loan, etc.).

Gym owners must be going through a lot right now as well. Their future has never been more uncertain. I'd imagine many people are asking for refunds and asking or threatening to cancel their memberships. It's not good for this type of business. This really needs to get sorted out by May 1st at the latest.

What an idiot. Rand has proven he's a far cry from his father IMO. Dude make $174k/year from his job as a Senator alone; I'm sure he has room in his house for some workout equipment, and plenty of money for some weights/bands/etc.

Nope, no background in those fields. I not underestimating anything. Think of it like war effort, and if they can't manage it, well too bad. There is no such thing as a perpetual quarantine. Everybody knows that. Since the start, it was about managing the burden on the healthcare system. That cannot be done forever. The wisest strategy is to segregate the old and the young to the maximum extent possible, Jinsun mentioned this as well and focus on expanding the medical capacity in the time the quarantine buys. If all you do is sit around during the quarantine, then that's nothing. It's of no benefit, the disease will spread again when the quarantine ends. The only question is when.

This. I am in commercial real estate. I am currently raising funds for a specialized building that probably doesn't have much if the equipment expense and planning a hospital will have. Our project is projected at $20M and we have been working on bringing it together for a year. We planned on breaking ground in June and it was going to take a year to build.

The complexities of it all are mind boggling. Then there is permitting and dealing with government agencies and getting materials, equipment, etc.

And we don't have to hire a bunch of highly trained people.

To build a hospital right now, with all the shut downs, etc. - it may take years. It normally probably takes years. These buildings don't just pop up. By the time you even see anything happening on the ground it has already been years usually.

I understand that. But desperate times call for desperate measures. I didn't mean proper sterling facilities. I meant ramshackle facilities like the kind China hoisted up.

The quarantine will end. The only question is when.
If you have no background in either field involved, how on earth do you know you're not underestimating anything man? Now, I'm no doctor or medical expert, but I do have a civil engineering degree and experience, and building hospitals isn't something that's just super-duper snap-your-fingers-and-it's-done-overnight easy by any stretch of the imagination. Not to mention ventilators and other equipment needed to treat severe cases, the PPE needed for medical staff, and, of course, the sheer number of doctors and nurses that would be needed if things get as bad as they could if we just continued life as normal with no social distancing or quarantines.

(edit: the whole idea is to slow the spread of the virus, that way we don't overwhelm our capacity to treat people. This capacity depend on hospital capacity, medicine, equipment, staff, etc. If a s**t-ton of people all get it at once, it's much worse than if the same number of people get it over a much longer period of time)

Frankly, you're speaking out of your ass... "if they can't, too bad." If they can't, then it won't get done, and millions of people will die. If that's "too bad" for you, **** right off...

No, a quarantine can't go on forever, but your "solution" is nothing more than the wishful thinking of someone ignorant in the fields in which they are speaking...

(edit: I also love how you're stating what is the "wisest strategy" despite making no sense at all, and citing no sources. Yeah, you're the wisest...

Also, think about the crazy high cost of healthcare right now. These buildings are often over 90% capacity, often even at 100%. If it really made fiscal sense to build a new one, they would already be there.

A friend of mine used this simple example: Because it applies to most Americans. Not meant for those in here, but I thought it funny; scary.

Karen is infected but feels fine;
so she infects 10 people;

Those people feel fine so they infect 10 more people;
It will then exponentially blow up.

If new facilities can't come up, the curve can only be flattened so long as the economy doesn't get on the ventilator which won't take that long.

Good luck getting a refund from LA Fitness.
I met with them about a membership I get reimbursed partially for from work and walked out.

They're grimy.
Then I read horror stories about people wanting to cancel their memberships and solidified my feelings.
I am a member there. They emailed their members saying they would be freezing everyone’s account if they aren’t opened up by April so they won’t be billed.
