Hyde’s Strength Odyssey

Nice work, and who in the holy hell says you shouldn't train intensely?

AMEN TO THAT!!! Intensity is key not only to performance but also enjoyment.

Mainly the Russians. Be a machine, don’t blow your load in the gym, blah blah blah. I think that’s probably more important to observe when trying to work up by RPE, whether that’s in a max effort method or just like in RPS where daily performance sets the numbers for the session.

But I can’t deadlift for crap without some emotion, plain and simple.

Yeah, I guess maybe they mean maximal intensity. Also the Russians tend to train a lot more frequently than we do don't they? If so then going to RPE 9 and 10 every time would run them into the ground quickly.

Unless I am working around an injury, or training for explosiveness I almost always try to get to at least one rep per set that I had to work for, and a hard rep on the last set.

Exactly. If frequency & volume are high intensity has to be managed closely to not burnout. But coming from more American bodybuilding influenced systems, I’m the same way.

Man, sick box squat PR. Is that both a weight pr and volume PR or "just" one or the other? Great work either way. I have a feeling im gonna have some serious catching up to do when I graduate.

It was a warm 97 out when we were canoeing but still a very good time. If you’re ever back home for a spell and want to meet up for some hiking or rafting and the like, I am game. I love the water and I like a good trail - don’t get to it nearly often enough!

Just remembered I read this and never responded to it cuz i was in the middle of something. That sounds like an awesome plan, im definitely in for that. Im hoping to line up a rotation site in the midwest next year so maybe it can happen then. I got into hiking probably a few years ago now and I honestly dont think I enjoy too many things more than just going out and walking around on a good trail with some beautiful nature to look at and seeing where I end up.

Honestly both, I’ve never pushed the straight bar to a max on a parallel box. Best single with the SSB is 422 (4 plates) some years back.

I feel like this is probably easier than a free squat thru parallel for me as I tend to squat kinda deep, but I feel I need to get used to building the strength to stay upright under bigger weights. Similar to how wraps or suited lifters tend to be able to bring up their raw lifts much faster once they take the equipment off, but plenty of lifters that stay in sleeves never go anywhere.

I wanna be the guy lifting the weights!

Bodyweight is down another lb to 227.5, despite adding the DMZ/LMG, so I am making progress with the diet.

Power seems to be trending up despite losing fat, and boxsquat has really mentally become my favorite lift lately. I am recovering a lot of ground on it, and to feel it improving every single week with more left in the tank has been a true blessing - I will take the ride as far as I can!

Sounds like I need to get out of sleeves and try some wraps lol (have been actually debating on buying wraps for 6-8mo now)

Congrats on the weight loss thus far AND the PR. I’d say your moving in the right direction for both goals!

Thank you! I am not using wraps, but just working off the box to keep me from squatting as deep is definitely helping accommodate easier to weight. I did watch my buddy get a 40lb bump from wraps (505-545), then coming out of them next training cycle hit 525 sleeved.

I said that because of this lol I’ve only been in sleeves

I need to stop procrastinating and purchase some wraps because there IS some carryover, if not just the feeling of having more weight in your back as well

Hell, Steve use to get 40-50 out of his wraps!

I think I am lean enough to slip into some suit bottoms I have without too much trouble now - I have a single-ply little Titan Superior I grabbed for cheap on a Christmas sale years back, and SweetLou’s sumo-cut double-ply Metal Ace squatter. Both took someone else to get me into when I was ~234. I was down to 225.4 today so I bet they’re about perfect now for some extra support without the battle into them or getting much lift out of them. The straps down ace may be perfect for these wide stance boxsquats.

Yesterday went to Martinsville, IN for the Giants Live North American WSM Qualifier - trained at Core Fitness first but forgot about the time change so didn’t get much done; just played around and set up stuff for Jessica.

Laurence Shahlaei has been perhaps my favorite WSM competitor since I was a kid. No idea why I loved him then, but he always wowed me with how fast he was. Over the last few years he has suffered a lot of major injuries...and finally this past year he has really been making a comeback. He has really inspired me as I have wandered my way back through all of the setbacks I have had over the last couple years when I doubted myself. To see Big Loz take the gold on the podium and earn his place back at next year’s WSM, and to congratulate him in person and share what he’s done for me was incredible.

I have been contemplating some BJJ or maybe even just straight up boxing. Then again a nice MMA school would be great too! My cardio was on point when I was sparring and rolling all the time. That stuff gets you in good condition!
When I took bjj the teacher would only let me roll with guys way more advanced than me. He said I just muscled my way out of things.
I can wrestle pretty good.....but my right is DANGEROUS. I hit my heavy bag at about 60% 3xs a week.
Bjj wasn't for me. Respect those heavy black belts though

Hyde way impressed how you keep your strength at that low weight.
As soon as I drop under 250 I feel weak. A lot of it is mental for me. If I feel weak I am weak.

You using two different dumbbell weights on the NG Db press?? Or did you do 6 sets total?

Yeah I had to roll with guys who were a lot better than me. They made me learn how to use my weight without gassing out. That was huge for me in a lot of ways. I am also a pretty good wrestler, but I love the clang and bang game too! The most fun for me was probably ground and pound though. I could just maul people once I learned how to use my weight without much effort. Was really good at taking the mount or side control and you didn't want to be in either of those positions with me. I wasn't great on submissions but really good at defending them and taking the dominant position. Speed and explosiveness were my best weapons whether stand up or on the ground. However I was always afraid to explode into an Arm Bar or something for fear I might accidentally really hurt my partners.

Makes me want to wrestle!!!! But I enjoy lifting a lot more. And it taxes you doing both. If your going hard at both!

Same thing with me i was always stuck with black and brown belts as a white belt cause i was strong enough to handle the other guys. The purple belts gave me trouble too. I was a good wrestler too and that translated very well for me

Well being off a proper cycle for a year has probably paid off as far as getting more bang out of the rather light stack I’m on now.

But more importantly I think in that time I got to really appreciate the mentality of strength. It is first, a mental battle of self belief.

I had insane appetite yesterday out of the blue and ate a legitimate 2k extra calories, which helped me get a bit more sleep too, so I had the power today! Hopefully it was just because deadlift was so brutal and not DMZ going full cookie-monster on me.

Even if so, make your will power as strong as your lifting resolve and you will be able to overcome it at least 85-90% of the time and on DMZ that is enough for great results!!!!

Yeah it is truly a terrific compound. And I haven’t had that kind of hunger today so I think it was likely just from such intense training and too little sleep.

Freakin’ blasted. 24 work reps at 385 took it out of me, and of course my iPod died right before my first work set lol.

Last day on S23 and I couldn’t care less. Stuff is a pain to dose, tastes awful, and not sure it really contributed much. Maybe 15mg wasn’t enough, but if I try it again it will be higher dosage and more concentrated.

Oooh some good girls and bad girls followed by some single leg glute press...better keep that estro in check, im a little afraid you might end up in a bikini comp at the end of this cut. If thats the goal just take the breaks off the aromatization so you can fill out that top homie.

Glute kickbacks are 100% a chick thing - It actually called for using a cable station, but I had to draw the line somewhere

Lol I thought it was gonna be a deload when I saw 50lbs come off her squat bar and the milder accessories...then I saw the 100% increase in volume over last weeks 4x3 and realized I was in for it.

Bro I wish I had some estrogen! Nothing aromatizes in this stack so I have to take some Boladiol preWO at least once a week with no AI just to keep my joints from exploding.

I actually strained an adductor once after a long Boxsquat cycle when I came back to free squatting and went to test my 3RM - the Good Girl was irreplaceable rehab honestly. The more you know...
