When I was 23 I didnt like myself where I was and where I was going. I decided to get out of the poor mentality that making just enough to get by and working through annual 23 cent raises just wasnt going to improve my life. I never took welfare, but my mother was on it, you grow up with this welfare state mentality, its like a disease. My sister unfortunately is victimized by the welfare state system. When I was 23 I decided to take up the opportunity to start educating myself and went to college, this is something that was going to happen when I was 18 buy my 3rd world country family was against me leaving home to better myself. The plan was work in a pizzaria and life will be great. My life then sucked after high school of course, thanks mom and dad fr ruining my life! I still love them by the way but they dont just know how to raise kids to succeed.

Anyways no need to make a whole book on here, but I decided to put effort into myself every day to better myself to put myself in a better position both by graduating college and working harder than ever on my own. Schooling is not just college but taking the time to study at home to set yourself up for a better tomorrow. I went through pains doing so but it was worth it.

I still work everyday to make myself in a better position tomorrow. When I know people that want to watch TV all day, play video games all day, hang out all day and simply work their regular 9-5 I always try to find time to get smarter, work better and learn new skills to prepare for tomorrow. I enjoy life and all those things of course, but I just keep a limit on entertainment and work to get more obsessed with progressing into the future and never being comfortable where I am today. Im not happy with my progress still and want to get much much better. I depend on nobody buy myself to get there, Im the one who is going to steer the ship, nobody is going to do that but for me.

Thats just some thoughts if you want my first reaction to answer your question.

My tanning salon lady (owner) who is a legal south American immigrant was just ranting about both her family and customers on welfare but drive really nice cars...she is soooo pissed off. She works hard to make her money and buy things, but people capable of working just like her collect food stamps and drive to the supermarket in nice cars and these people have no incentive to gets jobs. I did try to remind her some people do really need it, lol

Very good story. Pretty much the same thing I did. I feel like people get discouraged by being on welfare and don't see any way out. I can totally agree with your sentiment, and kudos to you for doing what you had to do to advance yourself!

It's really difficult for me to reconcile these ideas, I suppose. I believe in hard work, but I also believe that things like welfare etc. should be there for people. However, I also think they should be temporary solutions, not permanent.

If there is one more thing I quickly want to add to this is that a key to part of my success were hardships on the social stage as a kid, being fat, bullied and picked on. At 15 I couldnt take it no more and took up weightlifting in high school. I never looked back.

Weightlifting and bodybuilding (no im nothing competitive) taught me the discipline needed to better myself. I learned the harder I work, the more I get out of it. Its extremely rewarding and beneficial.

Now carry that over to the rest of your life and you have a winning formula to succeed. The more effort I applied in life, just like weightlifting the better things got with time. I learn all that because of the weights :)

So true. I wish I had started weight lifting as a youngster. I was also a fat kid who was picked on for that and being smart. I didn't start lifting until I was about 36, though LOL.

I dont have a problem with the idea of welfare in general, for right now however there is so much abuse I see and in the long run there is the abuse mentality that carries on from generation to generation. I would rather like to reform it than eliminate it, people DO need it, but my pessimism side in long term trust in government does make me lean to eliminate it. I wish we can reform it and make it much better I really do, if only the world was closer to perfect.

Your avatar there is a little hard to see but looks like you lost weight, is that so? If so what did you accomplish and in how much time?

Hey, forget the first 36 years, worry about now and the next 36, plenty of time to be the best you can be!! Often people start as a kid and now look like shyt....for example, the idiots that looked down on me back then, lol

Yes sir. I lost over 120 pounds, gained some back but working on it again. I know I can do it, just have to be strict like I was over that period. I think it took me about 2 years.

Thats crazy...congrats! You of course may suffer through the yoyo effect just like I had. I had been up and down several times through my life. I have lost around 55 in 08-09 (second time I lost that much) and never looked back. 17 years of struggle finally after getting doing better research with diet Ive mastered my weight and have been steady control for 8 years now. So anyways never be discouraged if you gain it back, but always find your failures and fix them, no matter how long it may take.
 
I bitch and moan about welfare and it's abuses as much as the next guy, maybe more....but having lived in a truly poor country[phillipines 81-87] for 7 years I realize how important it is to have a safety net. I could tell some story's about true poverty that I hope no American ever has to experience.

when I used to leave subic naval base to go into the city of olongapo, there was a bridge that we called sh1t river bridge[yes there is a reason it was called sh1t river bridge], you had to cross over this bridge after going thru customs-in effect leaving the U.S and entering phillipines...there would be all of these 'KIDS' in little makeshift rafts floating in the water waiting for people to throw peso's into the water, then they would dive for those peso's...the exchange rate at that time was 30 pesos to 1 dollar.

or about the street kids who carried around cardboard boxes slung over their shoulders selling cigarettes while hopping on one leg....or the continuous 'hey joe got a peso'...

and then the legalized prostitution...young girls would come from the provinces to work in the sex trade in olangapo, they were not looked down on by phillipinos, many of them supported their entire extended families from their earnings, who otherwise would have gone hungry...I admit to partaking of these girls with much pleasure in my youth, but now I understand how exploited they were--not only that but I now have 3 granddaughters of my own and would never wish this fate on them.


I think of those years of living in the phillipines and thank GOD I am an American:usa:

Thanks for the insight. I may also complain about certain things, but I agree that some sort of a safety net is necessary, and a good thing. I suppose my biggest gripe is with government inefficiency and corruption; it's one thing to be taxed to help people get back on their feet during hard times, or to build infrastructure, etc, but we all know how much of our tax dollars get wasted, and end up padding someone's pockets.

I remember Mark Cuban saying that he's a Libertarian but believes in having some safety nets, which is a platform I think a lot of people could get behind. I would have greatly preferred him over Trump. Just like Trump, he's a successful billionaire businessman (non-politician) who "tells it like it is," except he doesn't go to the point of saying too much stupid/sexist/etc things like Trump does.

the thing is that TRUMP 'IS' PRESIDENT....I don't agree with many things about trump, but to fight everything he wants to do 'just' because they are anti-trump seems anti-productive to me.

I visited 47 different countries when I was in the navy...when I say I am proud to be an American, I mean it!!!

with all of our problems America is still a great place!!!

Oh, I agree. We should want our President, regardless of who he/she is and if we love or hate them, to do well for America; to hope they fail is analogous to hoping the plane you're on crashes because you don't like the pilot. Don't you realize you'll get hurt too?

I just brought up Cuban because the talk of safety nets reminded me of him talking about his beliefs, and I think a lot of people could get behind a libertarian platform with some more safety nets than some libertarians may ideally want.

He was pretty clear and specific during the debates that he doesnt want people laid out on the streets dying of poverty and lack of medical care.

I think before we dig in deep we need to see the final version before they actually vote on it. I do know Obamacare is seriously a crime when it comes to poor people (in many cases at least.)

I do wanna say, the whole idea is to open up free markets and drive down costs through competition. Obamacare just didnt do that.

Poor people would have to buy insurance against their will enforced by the IRS or be punished for it. Its brutally inhuman to do that to poor people. Then if you were poor and got a plan, you now have less money and less incentive to see a doctor (the whole idea is to get poor people to go to the doctor to prevent worse conditions) because they are broke following the law and buying insurance and then you would have to pay 100% payment for a visit as usually the co-pays are some $100 a visit...etc..

When I was poor I would go to the clinic, a visit for some $80 they said pay what you can. I gave them $40 and they would never bother me again. No insurance of course, if I bought insurance I couldnt afford the $40 even.

With the Republican bill at least poor people have the right to opt out and keep the little money they have and just go to a clinic and pay cash, its cheaper than insurance unless something catastrophic happens of course.

Thats alot of stuff there for me to catch up on, but personally I do not support Obamacare or Dumpcare. I would prefer to completely illuminate (edit: damn spell check, thats eliminate!!!! lol) the idea of health care and insurance back to its original intent as 2 separate entities. I would eliminate all federal government interventionism on the health care aspect of it and lend that decision making for the most part to the states and its voters. Insurance is just what it is, insurance run by private companies people can buy if they want. I have some other ideas but if you make me your president I promise all your wildest fantasies will come true.

I agree about getting government out of health care and insurance. Health care should be allowed to be run as a business. If others want to start and donate to charity organizations to help out the less fortunate, then great, but I don't want to be forced to support anybody for any reason.

I, on the other hand, don't mind supporting anybody. Abuse and fraud is what irritates me. I believe everyone should have access to affordable care, no matter your age or income.

Of course, I work at a non-profit research medical center so I'm a bit biased I suppose ;)

Getting government bureaucracy out of it helps, it was government intervention with managed care that created the affordable mess in the 70s to begin with. Before that America wasnt a place where it was hard to get medical attention if you didnt have money. Lets get back to go to a doctor, pay him cash directly and call it a day.

So why not just give people the choice?
 
It's a bull**** system that benefits the poor. It's made most of the employer coverage catastrophic which makes it more expensive fur me because of higher premiums and outrageous deductibles. My present employer plan cost me over $600+ a month with $6,000 family deductible. So it's going to cost me $13,200 OOP before I see any coverage.

In AZ Obomacare is astronomical ($1,200 aka: mortgage payment) with less coverage and more restrictions. Then the real kicker is when I'm unemployed I cannot afford Obomacare and then I get fined t'boot!

It's great that those (the poor) that were without can get it with government subsidies and credits but because I'm not poor I get squat. It's bull**** that it's mandated and the fine is more bull****.

I propose that they create a plan and pass it and use it themselves - *******s! Or better yet have them pay premiums for theirs and dip into their very generous pension plans (with benefits) to buy it for the poor and leave the rest of us alone.

Couldn't agree more. I hate that lawmakers are able to pass thing but throw in some sort of clause which makes them exempt from what they just passed.

once you have served 1 term in the house or senate you get free healthcare the rest of your life....and it aint Obamacare coverage.... the most inclusive plan imaginable, they will never spend a dime on healthcare for as long as they live---not sure if family is also covered but I wouldn't be surprised!!!!
 
If someone want the benefits that come with a job, why not get that job? Again, people want things handed to them instead of working for it.
