The Unofficial Ice Cream thread

Another lazy ass AH flavor.

When you consider the amount of effort that they put in vs. S&S, it makes me feel much better about buying from the latter (totals for me: AH $18 per pint...not worth it...S&S $23 per...worth it usually for at least one of the monthly's).

Baskin-Robbins Mom's Makin' Cookies

Overall for a first time experience with Baskin Robin's I was very satisfied. This store bought pint had the consistency of Ample Hills and Salt and Straw as far as compliments go. While the base is not up to par with quality of some of the top dogs on the ice cream market it was satisfactory. The combination of brown sugar and cookies left a very good flavor mixture. The small amount of chocolate chips gave you a brown sugar chocolate chip cookie replica and had a powerful swirl of cookie dough. I have heard some hit or miss reviews on Baskin Robins, but this was a very positive encounter. I will be checking out more flavors in the future.

Graeter's S'mores

Graeter's took a simple summer dessert and mixed it very well into ice cream. The only take away from some folks may be the ice cream base is too sweet, and there is not enough of either mix-in. Graeter's tried to find a happy medium between all three pieces to the puzzle and did a great job. The graham crackers and chocolate chips meshed well with the sweet base to give each aspect of the S'more in every bite. I personally loved this flavor, and hope they bring it back in the future. I would place this in my top 3 S'mores of all time right up there with Wegmans and 7/11.

Lake Effect Couch Potato

Overall I love the concept of this pint. A basic vanilla ice cream that was done well by Lake Effect. The swirls could of been larger, but Lake Effect threw two of them in this pint. Their idea in my opinion was not to have one overpower the other. Instead they were looking to have each compliment the base and mix-ins. The chocolate covered potato chips were delicious, but scarce throughout the pint. If the swirls were a bit stronger and there were more chocolate covered potato chips (what I was most interested in) this would of got a better grade. Good, but not great!

Lake Effect Paula's Glazed Donut

If you love glazed donuts this is a pint to grab if you are in the New York area. The amount of flavor from the glazed frosting is delicious from first bite to last. The density and creaminess of the ice cream is a leap above Ben & Jerry's and Haagen Dazs. I would also state this is on par with Ample Hills & Graeters. The only difference is how creamy the texture is in every spoonful. For my first experience with Lake Effect I knew this was going to be good. Combine one of Buffalo's best donuts into ice cream, yeah you know that is a dessert made in heaven.

Lake Effect Salty Caramel Twist

I can't complain, my experience with Lake Effect has been pretty good and this was another great flavor. I heard some of their other limited edition flavors are even better then the ones I have tried, so I will have to give this company another go in the future. The only small gripe I had would be a larger swirl, as the mix-ins were good. The base was superb, and led the way for a great pint and pleasant experience.

Had the PB Cup Halo Top finally tonight. I really liked it. The PB is similar to what you see in a lot of ice creams with that kind of hardened/crunch drizzle/swirl. There was a little less than I'd like, but it was good.

Thought there may be actual little pb cups, but no. Still good, but should have just been named choc pb.

Tried both of these the other day...

Coohaus: this is one of the most authentic banana flavored things I've ever had. Not the typical "candy" banana flavor. It very realistic. Just sweet enough and with a descent swirl throughout that really makes this a simple but enjoyable flavor. I bought this on a whim cuz I had a coupon but am really glad I did. If you like real banana this is one of the best flavored items I've ever had. Overall a simple but enjoyable pint.

GF: this is straight up ground up espresso beans... I had thought the "chip" meant it had chocolate chips but nope. If you like coffee, this is basically like eating espresso beans dipped in something sweet. The flavor is strong and the consistency is nice and "chippy". Personally I'm not enough of a coffee fan to truly enjoy this so I thought it was average but for a coffee lover this could be in your top tier.

Espresso Chip is fantastic. I absolutely loved that pint being a coffee guy.
Grab Almond Butter Chocolate Chunk. You would enjoy that from GF if you can find it.
Mascarpone Pistachio Caramel is also a must grab. I am not a huge pistachio guy, but the base & Caramel make it killer.

Never seen either of those two but I'll keep my eyes peeled. Both sound great and GF has yet to let me down at all. dark choc seas salt caramel is unreal

Oh man. Now thats what I'm talking about! the consistency/creaminess of these pints have been awesome even without mix ins so I can only imagine this being even better

I just did a store locator after Bob's description lol.

Looks like the Kroger by our mall is listed -- I'll be stopping by there to check it out :food: :)

yep ive seen them at every kroger but not that flavor.

Cracked into the sea salt caramel halo top tonight... whoa. This may be the best of the new flavors. MidwestBeast you were kidding.

Also, could've just been this particular pint but it was far and away the creamiest I've ever had. Just an overall killer pint.

I haven't had another yet, but yeah, I thought it was phenomenal for what it is. At the top of HT's lineup for sure.

I, on the other hand, had another pint of Tonight Dough last night ;)

I seriously can't get enough of that one.

Tonight dough is amazing. Top 5 all time any brand for me. Cinnamon buns is up there too for b&j

That one is tasty, as well -- but I have to be in a mood for it.

Same for Tonight Dough to an extent, but it's nice because it's a lot of variety and it's just SO. MANY. MIX-INS.

So I feel like I can work from chocolate, back to vanilla, then some pb, then some cookie dough, then some brownie, lol.

The Kroger I usually hit (less busy part of town) wasn't listed on the locator for GF, but the other one by the mall did. I just hit the neighborhood Walmart market for groceries and dinner last night, but I'll be making a trip sometime soon over to scan for that almond butter cookie *crossing fingers*

Gelato Fiasco Truffles in River City

For my first MGMT Pint I was happy. Was I blown away? Absolutely not, nor would I rank this a top 5 flavor off the line. For someone who is not a huge fruit fan I have to say this was a great flavor added for variety. The base was done very well, the creminess of the gelato was on point, but the mix-ins could of used work as far as being consistent. Gelato Fiasco is known for hit or miss pints with mix-ins. Sometimes you may get a ton, and for some you get nothing. My Wild Blueberry Maine virtually was a base with nothing added. Since the MGMT pack is heavy in babka, donuts, and other specialty desserts I am eager to see how these all rank. For a first experience good, but nothing that I would rush to rescoop.

Gelato Fiasco The Goods

Overall I was pleased. Usually I am not the biggest fruit fan, but enjoy it from time to time. Gelato Fiasco did a great job with the base, and also put together two good compliments to take this to another level. The Candied nuts were delicious, sugary, and luscious in each and every bite. The lack of chocolate chips took the score down, but it was a perfect addition to a banana gelato. I personally walked away from this one with a higher score then intended, but I am not going to complain. If you like chocolate and banana's this will be one for you. The sugary vibe from the candied nuts gave it the banana nut flavor with the added chocolate twist. All in all a good one!

Gelato Fiasco's Supernatural Spirit Satisfaction

Invalid Link Removed

Overall I enjoyed this, but whiskey or booze fiends may be left shortchanged. The milk chocolate base was middle of the road which will drop the overall score a few points. Gelato Fiasco is really on point with the mix-ins in the limited edition pints and did a good job. If they had the torched marshmallows found in the S'mores pint I think that would enhance this overall flavor. Another thing they could of done was a marshmallow swirl and focused on just chocolate covered almonds throughout. I think that would of made this a better pint. Overall good, not great, but still something I would recommend.

Gelato Fiasco's Biddy Biddy Babka

Invalid Link Removed

Gelato Fiasco did a good job on being very consistent on this run of limited edition pints with their mix-ins and flavors. So far I have not been let down and each pint has been packed from top to bottom with pieces of cakes, truffles, and other mix-ins. The chocolate base may be nothing to ride home about, but the amount of babka really raised this pints grade. Crunchy, delicious, and laced with a chocolate filling left an unmatched chocolate combination. Think about a chocolate hershey bar and a chocolate cake loaded with chocolate chip pieces combined into a gelato. Job well done, if the base was a bit stronger I would of given this a top tier mark.

Figured so. I'll never see any of the le's unless referee in stores ha

order online sometime when you know you will be home from some companies you have not tried. Highly suggest it from a quality aspect. Ample Hills, Salt & Straw, Little G's depending on the lineup from S&S and what they offer. Safe bets would be AH and LIttle G off goldbely

That's the problem... I rarely am home longer than a weekend and even if I were, it's usually only last minute I know. Sucks.

Gelato Fiasco's Doughing Me, Doughing You
Grade: A-

the mix-ins are super consistent which has been an issue with me in the past. The base could of been better, but the texture and flavor of the mix-ins were a good match. Lots of flavor, lots of chewy goodness, and a good sweet cream base. If Gelato Fiasco stepped up the base this would be an A, but no complains on my end. For someone who loves brownies and cookie dough this really hit my sweet tooth.

Great pint, and what a way to end the limited edition pack from Gelato Fiasco. This was hands down the best base offered off the limited pints, and had a ton of donut pieces.
Love Donuts? If you are a fan of dulce de leche or a milky caramel ice cream then you have exactly what you want. Unfortunately this was a very limited run to get these pints, but in the end it was worth the purchase for the price. The pairing of the light milk chocolate donuts with a creamy caramel made for a way to end my Gelato Fiasco run with a bang.
