Somebody obviously has to pay to keep interstate bridges from collapsing, and some boats and planes to go meet anyone trying to land on US shores... but I have a BIIIIIIIIG Problem with the current US Tax Structure. Flat Tax, National Sales Tax, or a "Wealth" Tax would be much fairer and actually let people get ahead (Even with a wealth tax, everyone would be paying less than they do now).

Flat tax with first $15k exempt will only help poor people. I was poor for years, I know what hurt me most and that was the income tax.

No, but having only $22,500 left after taxes is a lot harder to live on than $2,250,000. That's an enormous difference, especially when you consider that poor people spend far more of their income on things like fuel, groceries, housing etc., than the rich.

I've also known many poor people over the years that buy more useless crap than rich people, and/or drop every last penny to make sure they keep their entertainment on at home.

That, IMO, is the result of the consumer economy that places social pressure on people that is very hard to resist.

No need for whole foods, but when I see people buying ice cream with food stamps and making a separate cash purchase to buy $80 in cigarettes and beer this is a serious issue.

You don't need health food stores to eat right. Chicken is cheap, oatmeal, eggs, certain veggies, etc.

If it wasn't for my wife's hobby of eating out I can eat healthy at less of a cost than the average poor person eats crap. Speaking from what I've seen with my own eyes for many years.

People can do what they want, but they need to take personal responsibilities for their decisions and not on my tax dollar. I'd rather hand poor people money myself at my choosing.

Also, if you think about it, the current tax structure is pretty equitable.

It is structured with tax brackets, which means that everyone in a bracket pays the same rate. The first part of your income is not taxable (which varies according to filing status, tax credits, etc.), and you aren't taxed on your entire income, just that part that puts you into the bracket.

Currently the super rich, who don't even get most of their money from income, are taxed at about 15% due to the capital gains tax rate.

I completely disagree. I don't like to see waste, but public education, free and reduced lunches for lower income kids, support for disabled people, etc are all places I don't mind helping out.

No, and there is no reason why they cant go to the doctor and get help. People with health insurance die, along with government assistance people including the vets.

Before government came in and made health care skyrocket through the roof with managed care, you can just go to the doctor and ask for help. If you had no money they wont refuse you for the most part. Doctors took a medical oath (which now is only optional) to help patients. You can give what you can, and if you cant you can give later or just not pay. There used to be alot of volunteer clinics back in the day, those are mostly gone now.

Insurance is just a service from a private company that you can opt to pay for. It measures cost vs risk. Its there just in case shyt hits the fan. Its not supposed to be health care, thats why its so expensive, its not insurance anymore. The system is ruined.

How much do you spend on people in need per year? Don't you think some of these things came into existence because the kindness of strangers wasn't enough to help out all situations? What if in a completely free market no one helps out?

Just bad luck for those born into bad situations? Tough break if you don't have legs to pull yourself up by the bootstraps?
