Plant protein vs Whey protien

My wife got some organic plant protein, the main protein source is brown rice and pea. Not too impressive but what maybe is, is all the probiotic, enzymes and vitamins that comes with this protien.

Is there any benefits over regular whey?

In my opinion not really. Whey protein is always going to be your first go to especially if you're trying to build muscle. I haven't used plant based protein very much so I can't talk too much about it but from what i've heard its a waste of money for the results you'll get.

From what I understand - there is no single plant source (rice, pea, alfalfa, chia, etc.) that has a compete amino acid profile. Whey however does. This is why it's fairly common to see plant blends, mixing together several sources to create a more rounded protein. I believe the closest single plant source for having a complete profile is hemp which is also naturally high in fiber and healthy fatty acids, but it's also lower in protein compared to other plant proteins.

So long story short, I don't necessarily see any advantage or disadvantage however in my opinion whey almost always tastes better, is cheaper, and gives you a greater serving of protein compared to plant. I will say though that most plant proteins are more "organic" as in they use natural sweeteners, possibly contain enzyme/probiotic blends, and usually have less fillers. But this isn't always the case and there's plenty of whey proteins that do this as well.

from my experience plant protein has a unique taste to it, it's not bad but it's not something you look forward to either....for people who get bloated or uncomfortable with whey protein might like a plant based protein or for people who are vegan might benefit from plant protein

my experience with plant based proteins are that I haven't noticed any negatives when it comes to body composition or recovery vs using whey (if there is a difference it's too small to tell), however as mentioned above I would gravitate towards a plant protein that is a blend of things like pea, rice, and hemp proteins over just a straight pea protein

the difference between whey and pea powders is that whey is a “complete” protein, meaning that it contains all essential amino acids, and pea is an incomplete protein. Whey is a byproduct of cheese-making, so it is a type of animal protein as well as a dairy product -- and all animal proteins are complete. pea is lacking the ess amino your body needs, you could always add bcaa's

whey is a fast acting protein as pea more of a slow digestive one

This ^

And also to add to smith_69 's post, whey is much more bioavailable than pea and plant proteins. This means that the protein from whey are better able to be used by the body. Your body digests whey better, and is able to use the amino acids quicker and easier than it can from plant based proteins

My buddy HAS to use a pea and other plant based proteins (hemp is another example) because he has a lactose issue (even isolates kill him). He says the pea (while not the best tasting) has helped him recover and build muscle BUT still continually takes BCAAs and other amino products. He uses the pea more of a late night protein shake or a mid day snack.

He should look into powdered grasshopper.

But in all seriousness, have him look into this:

Gluten and lactose free. I have some mild digestion issues with whey and lactose and I was totally fine with this. Also, have him check out HumaPro as well.
