Is quinoa worth the price??

Hey guys and girls, since quinoa has been gaining ground as a popular health food the price has been going up. BJ's wholesale used to have it for roughly $3 a pound but now I can't seem to find for anything less than $4 a pound... Anyone know where to get a good price on this??
 
It is good but it is nothing miraculous. View it as a carb source with a higher protein content than rice.

It isn't really worth spending a lot of money on in my opinion. This depends on someone's budget, obviously.

This, plus rice is cheaper and taste better in my opinion.

Basically at the moment I've been using it as a sub for oatmeal in the morning but if I use oatmeal than I'll use whey in order to get the protein. Otherwise I stick with greek yogurt or hard boiled eggs but i like having options lol... I do agree though if I can't find it at the right price I won't be using it anymore. In fact the same trend is happening with whey protein, in another couple of years it may just become to expensive.

I actually don't mind the taste, I know a lot of people are not very fond of it though.

Haha clearly you just didn't have it prepared right. Mix that stuff with dark berries, a little garlic, onion, parsley, basil, olive oil and lemon juice... Mmmm plus all 9 essential amino acids is so good

It was the Far East brand with flavoring already added. Still tasted aweful and had a terrible texture.

Hmmm... The stuff I get you have to boil for a while and it becomes the consistency of something maybe a little more chewy than firm rice.
 
If you like it enough, buy it. If price is an issue, look online for a bulk supplier or wait until they have a coupon or sale.

I've checked all over online including amazon. I'm trying to see if i can find it for less than $4 a pound.
 
I buy it at costco and cook it in the rice cooker with chicken broth. Awesome, if you aren't counting sodium.
 
You guys are crazy, quinoa is cheap considering cook weight albeit lentals and whole oat groats are mega bang for the buck. My sprouts has organic quinoa for 399/lb but can be bought cheaper in 25 pounders. Is it tuna protein per oz? No but nothing is (canning chicken is close) .

Quinoa is nice that it tastes like whatever you cook it in, the chicken of the complex starch family. If cost is an option go lentals, lima beans, or spilt peas for dinner time grain-ish starches.
 
Btw rice was mentioned. If you want bulk rice go long grain basmati. If you want white texture/flavor go black rice or at very least paraboiled (which is just steamlocked white to retain vits, some bran) . Never white rice. If you want fast cheap GI carbs instant oats are just as cheap but zero cook time and more "shake friendly".

With that said a good source for bulk grains is the mormans ( search "lds home storage" for a location near you. Obviously sams/costco but even cheaper is feed stores for the brave not afraid of the occasional pebble in thier oats/wheat berries/rice etc
 
I prefer oats,potatos,sweet potatoes,green veggies, rice,fruit,and noodles as my carb source. Its all glucose at the end of the day. Don't over think it.
 
My wife's a vegetarian so it's one of the few protein sources(besides beans) that she will eat. She cooks it alot and I really like it. Didn't know it was pricey. I like it more than rice. Where you live t bone? You must have the good dirt at your house, send me some!
 
Mrs. DGA3 just bought home some Kellogg's Special K "Nourish" hot cereal, which says it is a "multi-grain blend with Quinoa" (hot cereal).

I sure hope it doesn't taste like dirt!

(It probably won't - I see that each serving contains 11g of sugar).
