Carb coma? What gives?

So I have upped my cals and trying to build a few lbs of muscle and of course, trying to take in enough macros. My question is does anybody else feel lethargic after eating carbs (even complex carbs) a little while after. I had some olive oil and turkey early today and around 10:00 or so had about 75-80 Grams of oatmeal with some Splenda. I now feel like I'm in a walking coma. I plan to eat 8 oz chicken breast with some brown rice in a little bit and workout will be about 3:00 or so? Just wondering if my body isnt used to higher amount of carbs. It's been 2 wks since upping everything and haven't been this tired in a while? Anybody have some answers. It seems to be more frequent last 2 wks?

IT happens to me too but in the reverse sense. High carbs makes me very sleepy. I cant say for sure it was the turkey that may have started to hit you instead of the carbs, but I would monitor for a couple days and then see how it goes.

op have you tried a gda or nutrient partitioner? i take glycophase now but have tried almost all of them. Before taking any of them i use to get a lethargy from carbs but not at all now. Definetly would be worth a shot if you havent tried one. plus slin sane is on sale dirt cheap now

Higher carbs can make you lethargic yes.

It's just like any other meal that is bigger then you are used to. Once you get used to the added amounts you should be just fine though.

The type of carb also has something to do with it. With simple sugars you get a quicker digesting source and that's when people encounter the "sugar crash". With complex carbs though you will feel heavier but once they start to digest energy levels shouldn't crash like with high amounts of simple sugars.

GDA's are something to consider but I would only do so after I assessed how long I needed to acclimate to the increased food intake.

SlinShot worked well for me in the post workout window with simple sugars. SlinSane was the only other GDA that didn't cause stomach issues for myself.

Never really looked into a gda or nutrient partitioner? I will have to asses in next week or so? I know about the simple sugar crash that's why I wasn't sure on the complex carb situation? But I'm hitting 2 servings every time so it is something that my body probably has to adjust to. Oatmeal seems to hit me harder than brown rice. Maybe need to spread out servings a little also?

Maybe your body is somewhat resistent to insulin, so ingesting this higher amount of carbs would generate a higher insulin spike than usual and leaving you in a hypoglicemic state.
I get this carb lethargy from time to time, but for me it is not a very big deal as it doesnt last too long. I would suggest to try to eat less carbs before working out and most of your carbs after, since the weight training will raise your insulin sensivity and the body can better regulate bloodsugar.
I do this on training days and it feels great, but on rest days I try to evenly spread the carbs.

You could also try Intermittent fasting and working out in the fasted state.

I actually like to work out in a fasted state. I don't know about my actual strength but my energy levels are good. But the problem is, I have been training after work, somewhere between 3-6:00 and with my trying to bulk, I have been trying to eat everything in sight (clean that is). I find the protein is the easiest to get in everyday compared to carbs and fats.. Fats are probably a little easier with olive oil and almonds but i'm trying to hit 300 grams of carbs and it's tough!!
I started a thread about carb powder. I just need to find one that I actually can stomach and easily mixes in shaker.. If there is such?????

What IF protocol are you running ? I find it really hard to do lean gains (8 hour feeding window) while bulking, so I usually do 12/12 in order to get those calories.
If you consider going for a mass gainer (carbs powder + protein) you could try a tastier alternative: McDonalds (but without french fries). Maybe you wont get the carb coma from the mighty BigMac :)

one good idea. instead of oatmeal, use cream of wheat (much easier on the stomach) sits much lighter

I'm not running a IF protocol but I worked out most mornings last winter without eating anything before.. So I was without food from 9:30 pm to 10-11 am next day. It was mainly during cut/recomp stage because I just wanted to save calories for later? The no pre-workout shake or meal didn't seem to affect energy levels?? With the amount of bulking cals I need, I just feel like eat more then eat more:). Still experimenting with what is working best..

I do like cream of wheat.. Last winter I would sometimes eat cocoa wheats with choc protein powder.. The oatmeal is easy cause I eat the Quaker 1 minute stuff.. I will check into the cream of wheat!
