Sean's Powerlifting Journey

My knees still feel off without knee wraps. Wasnt opening as far out as I had wished. Not the worst. Hit up the SSB GMs because I felt my chest wanting to cave.

Looked good from the side, those ssb gm's look brutal...

I'll cook this for dinner tonight.

Side dish suggestions? Somewhat low carb. High carb day tomorrow

We all start somewhere.

Fu(k anyone that judges you, you're just trying to get stronger
Hell yeah, that's what I'm sayin!!!! I have my own dungeon, the only ones to judge me is my dogs...And they think I'm badass!!!lol
Thanks, love your attitude;)
This. You won't look silly a year for now :)
She Hulk in the making!!!!:D Thanks, your awesome!

So I busted out the 15's ,wrapped 15lb chains around my forearms and did work!!!! So fun! Just finished training, took some pics. I'll post them in my journal in a bit. Time to feed the muscles

So your going to stir fry veggies AND have spring rolls? That sounds like your best option. I can see how much you were shaking on those heavy SSB GMs. I have to push those heavy here soon. I've never done a lot of weight with them.

success

Edit: It sucked. Find a better Thai recipe. One that's not written by powerlifters. Too dry. Needs a peanut sauce

Somehow my body weight after eating all day is 207...

Squats looked good man. How you liking those briefs?

Id find something cheaper if there's something similar out but if you don't mind spending the bucks, they're great. They're warm as hell and my hips feel great. Form isn't effected one bit and they aren't too tight. I don't regret the purchase.

What is your current bench looking like? and whats your chest workout / rotation looking like?

Hit 300 in a meet in April. 335 with a bench strap. I'll do my required 5/3/1 sets, possibly more repetition work following or a supplemental lift. The majority of my chest building is coming from dumbell work. Back movements 2-3x a week, triceps 2x a week. Direct shoulder work on my overhead press day

I don't know how to bench. I don't even have to think about my squat. It just happens. Deadlift is getting to that point. Bench....I hafta think of so many cues just to mildly get more form right.

I had a tip the other day, that I'm overtucking, and my elbows are more inwards than my forearms. I also press towards my face. I plan on bringing my grip out to the rings today. I had been a finger or two inside. That should possibly prevent me from overtucking?

I'll be benching here in a couple hours with someone and I'll grab some video and see what you think.

Bench is my #1 lift. I am working on fixing my posterior chain and getting those up to par.
Have you considered finding a PL gym in your area? Getting in there with some of those guys for some real-world coaching?

Also, do you employ resistance bands, chains, all that good stuff?

There's to much that breaks down in the bench for me. My biggest issue is say: ill focus on leg drive and by doing so my arms flare, or my sb don't remain retracted, etc. so many cues to follow.

Sean- jealous of your squat thou. Deadlift comes so easy for me, but bench and squat are different stories.

All I have is a posterior chain lol

I lift in a powerlifting gym. A couple of Elite guys and a few heavy benchers. Bench press will be what holds me up from totaling Elite. Problem is I work 2 full days on/~2 days off. I don't see my family often so I lift during the day when the wife is at work and kid at daycare....the opossite time the guys lift in the evenings. Every now and then I'll have the owner hangin out with me while I lift and he will help, same with a couple others. That's where I got my "you tuck way too ****in much" tip from. There is a much larger sports facility with a good powerlifter group that will do movement assessments so I may be doing that next week.

I'll be benching with a 165 guy today, but he knows his stuff so I'll see if he can help.

Ive used bands/chains sparingly in my bench training. I disregarded consistent shoulder strengthening for a while and that put a damper on things. Ive changed that and increased my back excercises so now I feel my issue is more form than muscular. I need to get my form down first before I start adding variables to my bench. I have done a few pin presses, which definetly helped off the chest. Now my weakness is around the 2-Board area, where I start to press towards my face

I'm a month out from my meet, so the clock is ticking.

I wish I could just squat and that's it lol

Sounds like I can't contribute much, especially a month out... too many changes / advices / conflicting tips is just frustrating. Train with that 165lbs guy and with a MONTH to train just concentrate on the small easy adjustments you can make... then work on the bigger ones later on. Don't go drastically changing something crazy and screwing yourself up... that would be horrible.

Ohhhh no, you're not gettin out of this haha Ive seen your bench

I'll have a bench video up in a couple hours. New hand and possibly foot placement. I'll need all the critique I can get lol

Sounds good. I will also have my coach look at it...
In the future you should also look into Conjugate system training (Westside)... it is, yes I will make this huge claim, the #1 strength training system in the world. Period.
**** the 5/3/1 and 5x5 and all the other stuff.

Why don't you like 5/3/1? My 3rd week on it, and I really like the program thus far

Thanks bud

Ive dabbled in the thought of Westside. I ran the Cube Method for 18 weeks, 5/3/1 before that. My squat is close to my 600 goal and I needed to get back to the basics for my bench, hence why I'm on 5/3/1 again. I made zero gains the entire time on the Cube with my bench press, whereas 5/3/1 I did. I didnt want to conjugate press variations when I still can't bench

Though it's a much more simplified, newer version that I'm doing now. 5x5(75%), 5x3(85), 5x1(95)...I incorporate dynamic/repetition work how I see fit, along with singles/blocks/deficits/bands/supplementsl lifts/ect

Westside will be in my futures though

Thanks for checkin out the vid when ya do

Not that I "don't like it" its just not as effective as the conjugate system.
Why train with an inferior system?

Thanks bud

Sounds good, looking forward to it.

I personally use PL form on my bench 1x a week (When working to 1RM) then I bench more BB style on my volume days

If you're bored, feel free to browse through my bench videos man. I'll take all advice I can get

I did some cube for awhile. My shoulder didnt really agree with benching 2x a week. I do like the concept of the cube thou. Maybe when I get proven numbers at my 1st meet in dec I will revisit the cube

I will say that benching was easy with the conjugate method. I got extremely good at benching and my strength was way up. I'm T-one week from going back into Westside. I need to get my **** together and have a good plan going.

Get on it !!!!!!!!!

Hopefully I'll have a better assessment of what to implement after some coaching this weekend!

How far are you from Cincinnati Ohio?

How far are you from Cincinnati Ohio?

Four and a half hours, according to Google maps. I'll be passing through Cincinnati on my way to train with Brandon Lilly this weekend.
