13 Weeks to RPS Rawdawg Nats: Herder's PUUUGHE Comeback

Can you give a description on those a little more?

Holy volume batman!

I agree with napalm, dead looked easy last session.

Deload from here ad comp next weekend?

Hex holds are when you take a hex dumbbell and set it on end and grab it by the hex. If you can hold for 20s, grab the next biggest dumbbell. 40 is about as big as I can get my hand around.

The hub hold is basically the same thing. You take a plate, lay it on the floor, and pick it up by the center hub. The hex holds get hard because they get bigger and bigger, and the hub holds are hard because you can only get your fingertips on it.

The plate pinches are where you put the smooth sides out and pinch them. I can do two 10s for a long time, so I did 3 10s. You can work your way up to four 10s, then the 25s, and on up to 45s.

Other things you can do are wrap a towel (or two) around the bar and do rows or deadlifts, and one I'd like to take a crack at is to take those black binder clips and close it using your thumb and pinkie. Do some of these twice a week and watch your grip get better.

That's right, I'm gonna try to get mobile every day and do each of the comp lifts with like 135/225 for a bunch of singles to the commands.

Thanks man, those sound real fun. I definitely agree if you compete you need to train for competition.

A lot more fun than mindlessly clicking a Wal-Mart gripper or doing wrist rolls, both of which are nearly useless for strength or hypertrophy. Just remember: It's all fun and games until somebody drops a dumbbell on their foot!

My grip has always been pretty good from wrestling and working with my hands, but there have been matches where I knew I was going to lose just based on the handshake at the beginning of the match. I've been beaten senseless by guys that couldn't bench 135. Strong grip, strong man.

Haha I don't do anything for grip other than a lot of heavy work. deads, weighted pull ups, hanging leg raises etc. I guess a little extra couldn't hurt but idk when I'd fit it in. I've also always had a great grip, but I know what you mean. Good stuff.

Wait, didn't you always strap up for deads? Grip work comes in handy when you have to flip a 700lb tire and your only hand hold is a 3" tread. Or when you have to do farmers walks with 180# per hand, or when you're doing an axle clean and press with a 3" thick axle. Or when you're deadlifting for repss and then doing BB rows and then doing DB rows and chins and then more lat pulldowns and you forgot your straps.

I strapped up when pulling final heavy AMRAP sets like 475x6, yeah. All my lighter sets were without. So one set per workout with straps. I've also pulled 315x31 before with no straps. Haven't used my straps in my last few workouts at all and honestly it isn't any harder, I just have to use a different grip. Used to do a lot of tire flips prowling etc in football. The car pulls work it pretty well too. I'd say the rest of my grip work came from actually doing work, turning wrenches, carrying axles (real ones not ones for strongman) carrying feed bags, shoveling shale/sand/rock, carrying drywall, pouring and carrying cement or whatever else I would work after school and on summer jobs and mission trips. Pretty much just maintained the grip I had the last year but saw a good bit come back this summer when I got back to doing more physical work. Honestly unless I consider strongman in the future I doubt I'll ever find myself lacking for powerlifting.

and he benched 615 and deadlifted 805 for a total of 2320

At the meet I was scheduled to go to, the 20-23 year old non tested 220lb lifters posted 1795 and 1750 totals, there was a 785 squat, a 530 bench, three 1900lb totals, two 1800lb totals (one by an open 220 who wore no knee wraps).

And the guy from my neck of the woods that I met at the rib shack totaled 1925 last week with a 725/475/725. I need to nix that facebook message I sent the head of the crew and email that guy. I need to be doing what they're doing!

That is insane. The 181 kid from out here supposedly won bench and best overall? I don't think he totals over 1300 though. His best is like 425/355/475. I have no idea what he actually did this meet though ill have to ask.

Some of those numbers are just insane though. That squat..

I figured that guy would deadlift much more than that after squating and benching so much.

So You Think You Can Deadlift? has finally arrived:

biggest total of all time, 1200 squat almost 1000 bench 820 deadlift guy

You expected more than 820? Come on now, it's eight hundred twenty pounds!

He crushed his 820 deadlift, and I'm sure he was only concerned with 3005. There are many lifters who don't deadlift as much at the end of a multi-ply meet as they do in a raw meet. The equipment takes a lot out of you, from putting it on to the pressure it puts on you to the extra weight on your back/in your hands. Also, equipment doesn't help you nearly as much in the deadlift (hardly at all) as it does in the other two. 820 is nothing to sneeze at, either. I wouldn't be surprised to see him pull much more in the future.

Yes, I figured 900+ would be more appropriate. I watched the video, he barely broke a sweat on that pull. He could have repped it. Of course after squatting and deadlifting that much it's not going to come as easy and I'm sure he'd do more if he were only deadlifting. You're right about the total. I still think he could get more though. I mean I can name tons of guys off the top of my head that pull 800+ for reps. I'd think with such a strong squat and bench he'd do more. Granted I know it's multiply and you're absolutely right about it not helping the deads as much, it does help some. I don't know. It just seemed a little low to me. And seeing how easy he pulled it made me wonder if he could have gotten more but that was his final attempt. I agree I see him pulling much heavier. Man is enormous. Of course 820 is nothing to sneeze at but for the heaviest total ever I expected to see a bigger pull! haha.

When Super D hit the first 3000 total, his deadlift was 785. You'd have to go through an entire meet to see how much it takes out of you by the end. Raw, it will hurt your final deadlift number. That's why I'm opening at 455. There's no doubt in my mind on deadlift day that I could hit 475-500, but it simply doesn't matter after you've put out 6 max effort attempts. Just ask bolt, sean, rodja, napalm, rob, et al. That effect is magnified when you're competing in equipment. Mendelson has said he feels his bones flexing on 950+ lb benches, and Ryan Kennelly said the first time he held 1000, his vision went blurry and he heard a humming noise for a few minutes. I've done a few geared meet days in the gym where I hit 500/350/500 and I honestly can't even begin to imagine having to deadlift after squatting 1200 and benching 950. We really can't say "he should have done this/that" until we try to go 9-for-9

I agree completely. I'm saying it mostly from seeing how easy hit final went up. Not trying to be critical... I understand how it must feel. I know how it feels after maxing just deads or squat and can't imagine all 3. For 3 attempts. And then those types of weights. It's insane.

your video doesn't work anymore btw, is there a new link? to deadlift one.

oops. Let's see.

I can't get part two to load! They just put it up.

Not what I expected at all for part two. I wonder if they are gonna get into his neck position...also he sumos like a conventional. Maybe that's the plan? Interdasting tactic.

rob112 Gonna watch part two now!

Quick update for you guys. I've actually managed to keep myself out of the gym. I'm headed for Columbus tomorrow, so I'll be in town nice and early to hang out with my friend and his family, have plenty of time to drop the 5 or so lbs of water I need to drop, and get my last few lifts in tomorrow.

Tomorrow I'll be training about a dozen high school wrestlers out there, my friend is their coach and he came to me for S&C advice. My advice was simple: Read WS4SB, then read it again, then follow it to the letter. So mostly tomorrow I'm not coaching so much as making sure they're squatting to depth and not hurting themselves. I'm also bringing my sled, see if they know anything about hard work. They switched their max effort days to the end of the week so I can yell at them about knees out and elbows tucked and all that stuff that only nerds like us care about ;)

Weighing in as early as humanly possible on Friday (10AM) and then I'm going to see if I can't weigh 235 on meet day. I may or may not take pre and post bloat pictures.

Four minutes of watching a kid pull conventional in a sumo stance? That's the first time Elite FTS has ever disappointed me. The video being four minutes was my first boner kill. I could not be any more flaccid right now.

Do it, and ya know, EFS ain't too far from Columbus...I'd prolly at least do a drive by and bow to Dave...

I can't believe I didn't mention that in my write up! I am 100% doing that today AND/or tomorrow. Especially since I let a buddy know I had some ammonia caps while he was deadlifting last week and he went way overboard. And I need an EFS T-Shirt to go under my sniglet.

Weight Update:

24 hours out, 2 pounds over (actually 1.5). Today could almost be a normal day. Gonna get in a gallon of water this morning, cut myself off just before today's training session, and have an epsom salt bath tonight and I should come in around 217 even if the scale is heavy.

Nice job w the cut...

I'm so jealous of you bastards that live close enough to "the HQ of PL" that you can drive & visit.

I hate you right now...in a brotherly hate way.

It's ghey as hell, but surprisingly, getting in wasn't like getting into a Cavalier, where you're pistol squatting to an 8" box. The headroom and legroom is pretty good, but there's only two of us. I "seats four". I had plans on bringing the sled, but that was nixed.

I was thinking about it the other day, how when I got fired from G N C, my buddy offered for me to move out there, and now I think, Westside, Lexen, EFS, and others. It would have been incredible, I don't care if I was picking corn for a living.

EFS is tomorrow, and I'll be taking pictures!

EFS is pretty sweet. It's out in the boons for sure. Try getting into the gym, I only went into the warehouse.

I still got to make it to WSB, it's only 50 min away dammit.

Edit: Ohio is the best state. We got; EFS, WSB, Buckeyes, Reds, open carry, good looking women. Yeehaw.

Yeah yeah open carry, but concealed carry is heavily restricted bubba! You might have all that stuff, but you don't have the Steelers. And you don't have them boys that are 3 games up on your Reds right now! And your Buckeyes most explosive offensive weapons of the past few years were all from where again?

I don't know about "heavily restricted", I'm the only one of my friends and family members without my CCW. Pirates have a good squad, but lets see where they finish at the end of the season. Braxton Miller is from where I'm from. I can't describe how much hate I have for the Steelers, which stems from all the bandwagon fans around my area. If you're actually from PA I completely understand.

Don't be surprised if I show up at your meet with herderdude painted on my chest and a set of palm palms.

You probably should definitely come to the meet, man. If we're lucky, some of the guys from Lexen will step up to the platform. I have no idea who's competing, though I think EFS sponsored athlete Jenny Petrosino will be competing (HAWT).

The Buckeyes I was referring to would be Terrelle Pryor, Jordan Hall, and Corey Brown. Pryor and Hall were actually HS teammates, and they were in the smaller school category (think Div. II)

I don't like the way Big Ben touches the football after his crimes. Makes me uncomfortable. Need to wipe it down with one of them terrible towels.

I'd drive a Fiat 500, Abarth.

Man if I didn't have to work I'd be there in a heartbeat. I'm sure you're going to beast.
