Article: Music Lowers Testosterone

The fact that this study was done more then 10 years ago and I'm not reading about it til now leads me figure this is just much ado about nothing.

Still interesting though. We have yet to figure out what exactly the evolutionary value of music truly is, that theory is one I've yet to hear.

They should have had them listen to heavy metal and watched their testosterone levels raise. Listening to wussy music will obviously make you a wuss. Just like watching chick flix compared to violent action films.

^this X 10. How many bros listen to Justin Bieber or classical music while training? I think it's safe to say, none. If there are some, I'd bet they probably aren't running on their own T, cuz that would be a freak thing to do.

Agreed. I think the majority of people listen to rock/metal, rap, or some form of techno while training. For me heavy metal def gets me throwing some weight around.

I was going to make a joke about how many men who lift listen to ****ty music, which jives with my experience of browsing lifting vids on youtube, but then I saw

"Fukui did not look at what music does to men and women who train"

and decided this was the better joke in the article.

Bare in mind, these were japanese test subjects, so they started out with lower testosterone percentages to begin with.

You do realize that there are the Beatles, Rolling Stones and then, yeah, you guessed it...O-Town.

What, you from Orlando?

I tell you what, o-town might be useful as background music in a ladies club. It's been proven by Japanese scientists to raise estrogen levels.

"I want it all (your hubby's $$) or nothing at all (still take $1s)"

Okay fine. Two words or one and a letter....N' Sync......game over.

That was a stupid read. Music fckin pumps me up. cant imagine it lowering test, Unless your listing to some depressing/relaxing ****. But most guys I kno listen to some hype shyt wen lifting

Yeah lemme go to the gym without headphones so I can listen to all the bro scientists talk about nonsense. Jesus Christ did Mickey mouse do this study or what?

Hahaha. What a pile of horse ****. Music brings intensity. I have a far better workout listening to my metal then listening to other men orgasm every time they lift.

I call bull**** on this one, it's proven that playing Slayer's " war ensemble " increases your testosterone in the gym by 10,000 % .Times that by ten with anything from Exodus, Machine Head or Testament.

This has got to be the most absurd thing I've ever seen.

Totally agree. I mean look at the choices too. Also, did these guys even go to the gym? Usually my gym music gets me in the groove. In any case, a piss poor study.

A buddy of mine listens to backstreet boys and Molly Syrus because it pisses him off thus increasing test. So whoever said bad pop music isn't effective is a bust

The only reason why I listen to music while doing cardio is not to die of boredom. Doing exactly the same thing (like running, swimming) for 30 min or longer makes me want to solve differential equations.

It was leg day today. I was blasting Wilson Philips and squatn like a beast! The chunky chicks vocals get me amped!

Aye

Good lord man it can't be that bad?

Ever tried to swim 1000m min front crawl (nothing big imho) ? I did, and each time I found myself solving mathematical or programming problems. Same with fasted steady-state cardio early in the morning. It can get too boring. Only thing that helps me is music, thrash metal and distorted guitars (and drummer crazy as hell) to be exact.
I wonder if they ever tested testosterone levels when listening this kind of music - metal :D Even if it's placebo - it works on me.

"Klinesmith, Kasser, and McAndrew (2006) demonstrated that handling a gun caused males to aggress more in an experiment where they spiked a cup of water with hot sauce, believing that another subject would drink it. They also determined that the increase in aggression was mediated by testosterone levels that were raised by handling the gun. This is a well-accepted, reliable and valid technique for measuring aggression in the laboratory (Lieberman, Solomon, Greenberg, & McGregor, 1999)."

google:
Violent Lyrics in Heavy Metal Music Can Increase Aggression in Males, by Mast, John F.; McAndrew, Francis T.

published in Academic journal article from North American Journal of Psychology, Vol. 13, No. 1

The researchers proved that metal increases aggression, but due to a failure with the test equipment they were
unable to test testosterone levels.

here is a link to a page that has a copy of the study Invalid Link Removed

this experiment really needs to be run again so we can prove what everyone (except that Japanese guy) already knows

At this point, I would like to quote one of the forum users (sorry, can't remember who it was):
Too many guys get caught up in little number pieces like serum levels of ___ which sound meaningful. But they aren't if they don't actually have effect on body composition. That's why a lot of supplements turn out to be moderately useless, because they are based on research that shows blood markers for ___ to go up or down, but almost never on studies that show actual body composition changes.

slappy:
so you're saying I should grab some AK-47 instead dumbbells when working out biceps ? :D

According to that study, yes. Maybe skip the pre and clean a weapon. Or do curls with a .50cal. Even if the bump in T level is too small to do anything you'll still look lika a haus.

(yeah! 400th post!)

Must say that this study needs to be re-examined as times have definitely changed. Your mood and focus are baselines of how a workout will go. Everyone has that one track that sends chills up their spine and changes the game. I believe there is even a study examining the tempo associated with the music played as it pertains to exertion in a workout segment. But to each his own

There have been countless of studies proving music changes moods. Study to classical music for a mental increase is just like lifting to heavy metal.

Technically lifting and heavy metal are inseparable combo, 'cos you mostly lift metal things, and they are usually heavy :D

Very true and their even peer reviewed in several journals (Had to find citable sources lol), shame this one ever made it on to a website. Not a bad experiment but times have definitely changed and so has the human mindset.
