do the scales on phone actually work? I'd be surprised if the screens were fitted with a pressure sensitive sensor to measure weight on the screen.

OP - how detailed of weight do you need? I have a scale for basic 100mg-4oz, as well as a scale I use only for 2-99mg ingredients

Would like something that weights 50mg- 1 gram. btw, I looked at the reviews on the phone based scales and they are not very good at all...

Ya, I don't see how a phone would be able to accurately measure the weight. I don't think they are that advanced as of yet.

Bed bath n beyond - biggest loser scale - $20 and works just fine for me - been using it for years now and no problem at all measuring protein powders etc...

That will measure in grams and ounces.

If your looking to get and even smaller measurement, than something more expensive will have to do.

Actually saw someone use their iphone as a scale at a party recently. Was surprised as well.. wasn't aware there were pressure sensors in the screen....

you will need a scale that costs about $80-$125 for measurement down to 50mg(and have it be accurate).

Look for a carat/jewelers scale.

Check out the Gemini-20. It weighs down to 1 mg and can be found for $21.49 on Amazon, and it comes with calibration weights and everything. I just ordered one myself. I also have a small jewelry scale that weighs to 10 mg which I found for about $15, and it has lasted me over a year now with weekly, sometimes daily use. Keep in mind that for most cheap scales the very last digit isn't very accurate, so for example a scale that weighs to 0.01 g (10 mg) is really only accurate to around 0.1 g (100 mg) or more. The Gemini-20 should be decently (but not perfectly) accurate down to 10 mg. To get an extra digit of accuracy beyond that is going to cost you hundreds for a lab scale, so it's probably not worth it for your purposes.
