Vitamin C - should this be a staple?

bakerwil

Banned
I have been taking it regularly for about a year and am at the end of a bottle.
I never see it mentioned as a staple supplement and wonder if it of value for me to continue with?
I take a good multi each day along with lots of BCA's, Beta Alanine etc....

It`s suppose to be beneficial for collagen synthesis.

And the immune system.

I take 2g a day.

Ew why so much? 500mg a day should be more than enough and well away from peri-workout times.

I lift very heavy and I had terrible conn tissue pains.

WHO suggested at least 1g per day for arthritis so I go by that.

I guess 500mg should be enough for most people.

Will Coop come here and post "plasma saturation levels" or "detrimental for hypertrophy" before I do? :p

I had not seen Vitamin C as a viable or effective option for Arthritis though...

Couldn`t hurt...

Or could it?

Either way I don`t care haha

Hey Celorza, What happens if you take Vitamin C peri-workout? Maybe I should not be eating the chewables like candy out of my gym bag!

Detrimental to hypertrophy and it does not lower cortisol unless you are depleted or a marathon runner.

First I heard of something like that.

Search the Dana Houser sub forum, I remember an old thread where Coop smacks some knowledge basic and elementary to all human lifters.

Vitamin C is thought to help arthritis because it is necessary for the hydroxylation of lysine and proline residues in collagen synthesis. Unfortunately, taking more than the RDA of vitamin C provides no further benefit for collagen synthesis unless you are recovering from scurvy. If you want to exploit the collagen pathway to ameliorate joint pains, go right to the source: eat more hydroxylysine and hydroxyproline via collagen (found in jello and Musclemeds carnivor). The data does support high doses of collagen for joint health in humans.

Thanks for clearing that up Mr.Coop!

So no more than a few hundred mg vit c per day is needed.

Also I`m taking 5g collagen(1&3)every day and it seems to help very much.

This is from Dr Dana Houser's Top 10 Supplements

"Too much Vitamin C in the acute setting can be just as pro-oxidative as using none at all (or worse).

That said, 500mg with every meal (pre- and post-workout may be notable exceptions) - even if that means you are eating 6 meals a day (outside of the workout)...that'd be 3 grams per day to accomodate the increased metabolic demand."

I also read that Lance Armstrong was taking mulitiple grams of C a day.

Lance was an athlete that really needed it, like I said a marathon runner or in his case cyclist and what not, and also juice extravaganza, would've have needed for it to actually help in cortisol control but HE is not you...

What does this mean? I'm close to a marathon runner cardio wise...

Ok it means that unless you are performing strenuous exercise for multiple times a day and it is exceeding the range of 3-4 hours of continuous stress on the body or you make it a daily habit then yeah by all means 1g post workout

How do you know I'm not?! Or that I do something similar?! I'm just asking questions... I appreciate your help but don't make assumptions about me.

If you are a steroid using, long distance, world wide known athlete, my apologies. I just usually asume most of the people here are recreational lifters, leading a usual american lifestyle and add this in as their pleasure , hobby, recreation or aesthetic satisfaction (or overcompensation).

Now that you mentioned you do near a marathon , daily...can we get some specifics of that? In case you are running high oxidative stresses, and long distance running every day, you can become Vitamin C depleted and in that case it is a good option to listen to Dana, if not, yeah don't...not in the Vitamin C aspect. At least that's my opinion and some of us other forum's members opinion.

I'm not a hobby lifter and I have people that tell me what to eat but I like to do my own research to know why I'm supposed do and eat something. Most of you guys here are amazing in knowing your nutrition and I learn something everyday from reading here, that's why I come here, but sometimes I just want to have a straight up answer on my questions.

Thanks for your help!
