Rules you live your life by

I recently read Colin Powell's most recent book and he has several rules to live ones life by. This got me thinking about my own set of rules I've learned to live by and thought I'd share them and see what all of your individual rules are.

These are in no specific order.

1.) Life is not fair, get used to it. - Bill Gates said this I do believe

2.) Live for today, work for tomorrow

3.) No matter how easy of a day you have, never, ever, for any reason, tell your girlfriend or wife how easy it was. lol
*** I work for the Power company, so I seldom have easy days. Working in the 100 degree weather for 16 hours is by no means a walk in the park. However, some days we do nothing, and get paid very well for doing nothing. In my experience it's never a good idea to tell my g/f who makes 1/3 of what I make yearly how easy of a day I had when she was busting her ass all day in the office. Apparently all my 90+ hour weeks aren't too deserving of easy days here and there. So I stray away from my work load and usually respond with a simple "same ol same ol"

4.) Save now, spend later.
*** I'm only 25, just a child compared to some of you. Most people my age have all these wants in life. I have wants too, but my wants can wait unlike my peers. I live comfortably with the essentials and work hard for tomorrow (see #2). I've had a rough couple of years since I've been out of the Navy. Working 2 Jobs, 60+ hours a week, bringing home $9.00 wages for the longest time until I got my job at the power company. I rather live at just my needs level now, and have some fun in my 40s and 50s before I'm too old too.

5.) Learn something new everyday
*** I can honestly say I learn something new everyday. In my field it's very easy too. However, I don't just mean in the work place. I'm an avid reader, and love learning new things. You can never read too much or learn too much in my opinion.

6.) Have thick skin

7.) Be confident and stay ambitious. Just don't look like a c--cky ahole when doing so.
*** Being highly competitive is fine, just do it in a professional manner.

I have a few more that I can't think of right now, but these are things I think of on a daily basis that keep me striving to improve myself and career.

Here are Colin Powell's rules he stated in his book IT WORKED FOR ME. I personally love each and every one and have already started incorporating them into my every day life.

1.) It aint as bad as you think, it will look better in the morning

2.) Get mad, then get over it.
*** I absolutely love this one.

3.) Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it.
*** having been in the military, I've witnessed this entirely too many times.

4.) It can be done

5.) Be careful what you choose, you may get it.

6.) Don't let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision

7.) You can't make someone else's choices. You shouldn't let someone else make yours.

8.) Check small things

9.) Share credit
*** I've seen people in leadership positions neglect this all too many times

10.) Remain calm, be kind
*** I've been implementing this towards my life for years, and here it is in Colin Powell's book. ha.

11.) Have a vision, be demanding

12.) Don't take counsel of your fears or naysayers

13.) Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier

The measure of a man is one who strives to leave this world better than it was when he was born into it.

i went with my dad to see warren buffet and bill gates speak. their advice are the miost simple things but the perfect things to follow.

Treat others as you would like to be treated.

I like your post and I know what you mean about working in the heat and long hours I'm a lineman for a small power company in Florida

I practice Buellerism.

- Get along with everyone. Be a righteous dude.
- Lay off your brother; he loves you
- Your sister loves you, but she also knows you're full of crap
- Stay cool and remember that when the meek get pinched, the bold survive.
- Hide in plain sight and Lip-synch in the face of danger
- Take some time for yourself every once in a while. At least nine times a year.
- You can't respect somebody who kisses your ass. It just doesn't work.
- Between grief and nothing, take grief.
- Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

No one here mentions NCIS rules? Here are few that I have adopted over the last few years

1. Never screw (over) your partner.
2. Never believe what you are told. Always check and then double check.
3. Never be unreachable.

at the end of the day, it does not matter where you live, how much money you make nor who you friends are. as long as you are happy your life is perfect

I don't live my life by any rules, i found it better for me to not go by guidelines, and just live life.

There are three rules that I live by:

"Never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese."
