Hey just got a question i take multi vitamins but i have heard that they are not at all that good for you and would like some more opinions on it.

thanks in advance!

Why wouldn't they be good for you??? That's the reason you take them in the first place, no?

Well if you only weigh 69lbs than you have more to worry about then a multi-v. ;) Seriously though, get a quality vitamin and dont worry about it.

There are studies for and against multi-vits especially those that are mega dosed. Try to get all of your all of your vits from solid food (fruit/veg) rather than relying on supps.

the one that worried me was a study done on people who took multi vitamins and people who didnt and people who did died earlier in their lives...
not sure if that is a bit of crap though or not

If multivitamins are bad, so would protein powder and all other supplements. I think what you are hearing from people is multivitamins aren't the best way to get the vitamins, the diet is always the best way. Not always possible, especially when cutting.

now...

Seeing the name Palko make me think of....(and he has more problems then just a multivitamin!) Invalid Link Removed

Haley is gone, and Palko doesn't stand much of a chance to be even warming the bench next year. (For those wondering the person in the picture is Tyler Palko, second/third string QB for the KC Chiefs that is just a horrible QB.)

That would be almost an impossible study to do correctly and follow a scientific method on. I'm calling broscience crap on that one. Link to the study?

i cant post a link because i have to have 50 posts or more.. dammit but if you Google "Vitamin Risk Overblown" there is an article that comes up that someone wrote here on anabolic minds. For me it was the top search result shown.

Maybe look into Dinoiii's ACES protocol?

I can't post links, but if you do a google search for:

"the great multivitamin debate dinoiii" (without the quotes) it should be the first result.

Once my current multi is done, I'm planning on trying it out.

This study has been well analyzed and has been unanimously declared as crap. The actual results of the paper, like what the researchers found, is that there's no correlation between vitamin intake and mortality rates. The thing that was actually funny about the study is that the conclusions of the authors, which was to avoid vitamin supplementation unless under doctor supervision and to treat a medical condition, were contradicted by the same data in that study. As I said, the data suggested no correlation between vitamin supplementation and increased mortality, EXCEPT for like 3 specific minerals (I think it was iron, copper, and something else). For all 3 of those minerals, the people supplementing them were supplementing them under doctor supervision to treat a medical condition. Let me hear that LOL.

The study is available at Invalid Link Removed

Conclusions Treatment with beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E may increase mortality. The potential roles of vitamin C and selenium on mortality need further study.

I've seen a couple of TV programs on it and apparently it was the largest study ever done on multivitamins. On the same program there was a counter argument from Doctors who work with multivit companies so who knows.

Personally I take a 'normal' dose multivit rather than a mega-dose product and make sure I get some fruit and veg for any additional vits my body may need due to exercise.

there is a huge difference between a correlation and a causation

For me it's hard to refer to a multi vitamin as good or bad simply because they are all so different and many contain items that have promising early research but nothing conclusive.

Having said that vitamin a, e, c all seem to have good research behind them showing reduced cardiovascular disease, and immune support. Cancer research seems hit or miss.

Like someone else mentioned focusing on fruits and vegetables first, then take a multi. But no need to mega dose any of it.

Dinoiiis aces protocol is good too imo.

OP, some vitamins such as a fraction of Vitamin E are only fractionated nutrients and can actually down regulate your response to the whole complex of vitamin E. Just try to avoid any fractionated nutrient vitamins and look for whole complexes.

This.

When taking multis, its really important to research which forms of the nutrients are contained within it. Synthetic vs. Natural, efficacious dosages and what you are getting solely from diet. I think most conscientious eaters would be surprised that they really don't need to supplement more than maybe 2 or 3 of the ingredients in most multis.
