Stomach Pain L-Arginine-How to get rid of it?

I have NEVER had any reactions to any supplements before.
I was trying to increase GH at night so I was going to start taking Glutamine and L Arginine before I went to sleep. I had taken Glutamine before with no problems. I took L-Arginine for the first time in a very long time, and I have been having stomach pain ever since. I guess it doesn't agree with me. Never going to take it again. It is very weird. Every time I swallow food it hurts. Should I go to the ER? Tried Maalox and Tums..they haven't helped. What can I do to get rid of this pain?

You should probably follow up with a doctor. There may be an existing issue that the Arginine just exposed/aggravated.

How much did you take? I cannot take large amount of it because I have a hiatal hernia and I am in agony for 1-2 days if I do. Almost like the feeling you get if you take aspirin on an empty stomach. Only things that help in that situation are chamomile tea, ginger (or ginger tea) and DGL (licorice). The licorice thickens stomach mucous.

Also, L-Dopa is a much better choice for GH...

large doses (4g +) of l-arginine (free form) may cause intestinal problems. any other form would work better (AKG, KIC, di-arginine malat etc).

by the way, i agree with ccnanabolic, u won't get enough GH increase from amino acids that it would make any difference. IMHO there is no legit supplement that would

Agreed with both above. Stop taking the AAs until the pain goes away. Did you end up going to the ER last night? Are you feeling better this AM?

High doses of L-Glutamine cause stomach issues in some individuals

and if you wish use Arginine use the Pyroglutamate for of them (is a dipeptide that may cross the blood and brain barrier more easily where it releases arginine, acts as a slow release glutamine, and promotes positive acetylcholine levels)

if you wish GH release @ nigth use

Arginine Pyroglutamate
Ornithine AKG
Murcuna Puriens (standardized for L-Dopa)

Wise Guys Here :D

I am holding off..I checked what "came out" of my body-no evidence of bleeding.
It still hurts. I did not take much at all. I took two 1000 MG Tablets from GNC.
It's not like I did a mega dose or anything crazy.

OP - are u sure it isnt unrelated? If you are having another problem maybe you just think its because of the arginine?

I think it is because that is the only thing that changed in terms of any intake.
I have had stomach viruses before. This is different. It only hurts when I swallow food. I have no pain or discomfort otherwise. I am not sure if I had a pre-existing condition and the arginine pushed it over the edge, but I am 99% sure it was the arginine that caused this pain.

I would definitely check with a doc. If it hurts within a couple of inches of the base of your sternum when you eat then it could be your lower eso****eal sphincter(insert Beavis and Butthead laughs here). This is what gets inflammed on me and it sounds like the same kind of pain.

Icarin also does it to me by relaxing the hernia open causing stomach acid to irritate the LES.

That is exactly where it hurts. . What did you do to "cure it"? Just stopped what you were taking?

Yup. Chamomile, Ginger, and Licorice soothe it but time heals it. I strongly suggest you see a GI doctor just to make sure the arginine didn't just expose an issue like I have...

Going to the ER in the morning. I thought it was getting a little better, but I tried to eat plain noodles tonight and got one hell of a pain.

Went to the ER. They could not figure it out. I was able to drink water so they didn't do a scope. Three different doctors came in and nothing was making any sense. They put me on Pepcid and Protonix. Finally able to eat cereal for the first time. My diet has gone to hell this week..all I could eat is special K. I am never going to take arginine again. This is the first time I have had I have had any kind of side effects from any supplement.
Thanks for all of your input.

Unless there is an underlying issue, I would discontinue Protonix as soon as you can or you will be in rebound hell forever, trust me...Then Pepcid. Problem is there is hyperplacia that occurs in the "acid pumps" from those types of meds and when you stop taking them they overproduce acid for days or weeks. There are numerous articles about people not being able to bare the rebound long enough to stop the meds and just give in and get back on them. So, the medicine just ends up curing its own side effects. Two weeks is the norm for healing minor issues...

Also, I had the same issue at the ER. If after a a few days off the meds, you should definitely follow up with a GI doc if you can. The ER won't do a scope because there was no emergency. However, a GI doc will do a barium swallow, scope, etc. for other stuff.

I would not let this go...

You need to go to a specialist. ER docs are more versed at keeping you alive and back out the door than getting to the root of the problem.

I actually tapered off the antacids today. I took only one pill each. I am definitely going to followup with a GI doc soon. I think my body is just really sensitive to arginine. I had a pill break up in my mouth previously, and it burnt the hell out of my gums. I had amino acids break up in my mouth before with no problems. I didn't have any GI problems with arginine before, but it was weird that it burnt my mouth so much. Maybe that was a sign it could cause problems elsewhere. Not even pure vitamin C had done that before. I am

Hey man,

I just took Arginine on Monday and im actually experiencing the same pain as you are. How long did i take for yours to go away? what did it end up being? Also, I bought mine at GNC as well.... hmmm

Thanks for your help.
