A Squatter's Rites

...Wow. :jaw: And he died at age of 37, what a bummer.

My admiration for Eder and Eiferman stems from them coming from an era that had a focus on "strongman" training and feats of strength. And it's inspiring to see what they accomplished without drugs of any kind.

Considering my lack of finances and sources, I won't be running anything more serious that a Dermacrine/Androhard cycle anytime soon, so these guys give me something to shoot for.

I wish I had youth on my side to push the big weights. The old frame just can't drop the reps below 8-10 without dire consequences. I just have to live vicariously thru you guys.

We old men can still push heavy even while keeping the reps in the 8-10 range. I like working out in this range anyway. I know it promotes growth/mass and not just strength only. It's the best of both worlds.

Look at the weights that Branch and Ronnie toss around in this rep range. Astounding to say the least even if their form isn't exactly tight.

While not as enhanced as Ronnie and Branch,we can still move some weight. I've just had to forget about doing any singles or maxing out for longevities' sake. My ego wants more though...:sgrin:

Hey Resolve (or anyone really),

Could you do me a favor? I've been corresponding with JudgementDay, ever since you suggested that it may have been him who PM'd me and it was. However, this morning I signed on and I got a pop up saying JudgementDay sent me a PM, however, my messaging has been disabled and I don't know why. I cant receive or write PM's to anyone, which is why I'm posting on your log.

I don't know if PM's is a new paid feature I missed, but I had it yesterday and its gone this morning. Also, I didn't get any infractions nor would any of my posts have caused one, but it is what it is. Could you let JudgementDay my messages has been disabled. He probably just responded to our ongoing MMA conversation, but I already got a bad wrap for accidently deleting his previous PM's and I don't want to come off like I'm suddently igorning his PM's.

I don't know whats going on with my message disabling, but you can't fight City Hall :phone: Thanks.

Nothing wrong with 8-10reps; it's served as the foundation for countless bodybuilders. Vince Gironda believed 8 reps was the perfect number for any lifter. Ellington Darden even suggested higher reps (12-20) and high sets for older lifters, including himself as a guinea pig in that category.

Branch's back workouts are a thing of beauty. The way he seems to disregard total number of reps and just goes for the gold on every set...

No, I'm not a republican, but I feel very strongly about this encroachment upon basic human decency.

Also, the bill to censor the internet is back in congress - ubelievable. I'm unaware of any petitions or grass-roots movements concerning this issue. If anybody else has heard of any, hit me up.

I am a republican and I agree with you completely. Those screenings are pornographic in nature and must be embarassing for both the screener and the screenee. I couldn't imagine my grandmother being groped like that.
Myself I would opt for the full body X-Ray type screening even though that is not to my liking either. I'm sure that if one flies frequently that couldn't be healthy. In the future I hope someone sues airlines for cancer induced by said screenings.

Also censoring the internet is a violation of freedom of speech and civil liberties rights. What the Hel is this country coming to?

Ragnarok surely loometh nigh. :hammer:

Sadly, I think this country is certainly taking a turn for the worse. Though there are aspects of the current regime that I like, there are just as many, if not more, downsides. The foremost apparently being infringement upon basic liberties.

As Ben Franklin said, "Those who would give up Essential Libertyto purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

And I mentioned that I am not a republican because I cannot currently align myself entirely with any one party, not to infer that I've got a problem with Republicans. I have a problem with ignorance, and there are just as many Democrats and Libertarians and Green Peace Hippies that fall into that category. ;)

Anyways, stepping down off my soap-box, I hit arms yesterday. Sort of. It ended up being a routine heavy on compound movements. Here's how it went down.

Weighted Dips for 8x5, working up to 105lb for 5sets
Narrow-grip Military with Bands for 5x5, 95lb plus bands
Various Cable Extensions for a lot of sets

Barbell Cheat Curls 8x5, working up to 155 for 4sets
Lying Cable Curls 5x10, 80lb with 10sec rest between sets
Spider Hammer Curls 5x12, 40s (these are hard, light weight required!)
One-Arm Machine Preachers 5x20, 50lb

Grip-work:
One Arm Deads: working up to 175 for 3reps per arm.
- These are A BLAST! I fully intend to incorporate them regularly now. They'll help my grip and balance and provide a nice change from standard pulls.

Lockout Holds with various grips: Starting off with 75lb I held the bar in just my index fingers to failure. Bumped it to 135 did the same with index and middle fingers, repeating this at 155. From 225 to 315 I used a false overhand grip, at 405 I used a normal overhand grip, followed by a lock overhand grip. Bumped it to 495 and used a false alternate grip. Then called it a day.

Got the idea for these for Herman Goerner - a guy who had a 600+lb One Arm DL. Man's grip was insane, so I had to give these a go.

Ok, let's see, what I have done recently?

Saturday was Leg hypertrophy day. Leg press hit 720x20, followed by a bunch of split squats, walking lunges, step-ups, sumo db squats, leg curls and leg exts. Closed up with 10 sets of various calf raises.

Yesterday I hit bench accessory and messed around with OHP grips. Finding that slightly wider than I've been recently using gives me better strength right off the chest.
Also did some wide-grip decline press and pendlay rows.

The elbow sleeves I was given are coming in handy - I can finally to overhead triceps extensions again without pain. My strength in the movement has gone down, but I was able to hit 155 for 2. It'll come back.

Two days until the first time in over a month that I'll eat more than 2600 cals. :food:

I am an Independent myself. However I found it frightening to hear Obama say he did not like the Constitution because it gets in his way. Too bad we have to swing from far left to far right and can never have a nice middle ground where solving problems is the goal instead of being right...

You have realy made some nice strides in the strength category. So let me guess on Thanksgiving your Thansgiving meal will encompass the entire 2600 calories you have allowed yourself daily for the last month.

I didn't vote for him, but I had high hopes when he took office. I'm all for the healthcare reform, but other than that, our current president has failed in many areas, IMO.

Thanks for the encouragement. Yeah, this coming weekend is going to be a refeed. Thursday I'm not tracking cals at all (it's a holiday for crying out loud) and Friday and Saturday I'll be eating 3200-3400 cals. Give my body a chance to reset it's metabolism after a month of tiny meals. Then it's right back to the diet.

My Mesomorph log is up! Anyone interested my join in here:

And here is my workout from today. Fat-loss has stalled a bit, so rather than reducing cals, I'm increasing work load and incorporating a couple full-body workouts per week. In addition to what I did this morning (listed below), I'll be doing some instinctual ab training and bodyweight assistance movements tonight after I get home and eat dinner. Also still regularly walking to/from school.

Box Squats: 5x3 working up to 335, followed by a final set of 375 for 6.
Supersetted w/Single-leg calf raises to technical failure.
I used a 14" box, which allowed for a "just below parallel" ROM. 375x6 is a PR for reps

Overhead Press: 4x3 working up to 195, 205 for 2 strict reps, 225 for 4 push-presses
My strict press is weak, need to bring up the power off the bottom of the rep. Going to implement pin presses for this next time.

Weighted Dips: 5x10 with 45lbs
Ss'd with Single-arm Cable Rows: 4x3 working up to 200, final set with 210 for 4
The dips serve as accessory to the press, while the rows follow 5/3/1 rules. +45 for 10 was easy, and I had no shoulder pain (a recent injury made dips and bench a no-no for a while), so next week this is definitely going up. 210 for 4 on the rows is a PR.

BB Cheat Curls: 5x5 working up to 165
Lying Cable Curls: 5x10-20 with 60-80
I finish off most workouts with some direct arm work. Having done dips, I didn't include any triceps isolation today. That will come tomorrow. 165x5 felt lighter than 155 did last week; an easy 10lb increase is good progress.

Nice work man! I like the sound of how you have your week planned out too.

Some awesome workouts as of late big Resolve. You're progressing very nicely in the strength department. I like the layout of your routine. Hardcore is an understatement.

Enjoy the Thanksgiving feast my eternal brother. We have SO much to be thankful for. I also will forego counting any calories that day. Should be astronomically high!!

Give God all the glory!!! :box:

Thanks TG - It's interesting to me that in some movements I'm really thriving, while in others, I'm lagging big time. A perfect example of this is the discrepancy between my push-press and overhead press; without that little bit of leg drive the load I can lockout drops significantly. Room for improvement.

I hope everyone had a FANTASTIC THANKSGIVING! Mine was good, but certainly different from any I've ever had before.

I had a list of food I wanted to eat (sushi, pizza, toast with jam, cocoa nibs, sesame sticks, and anything involving potatoes) and I'm happy to say, I enjoyed every item on it, plus some excellent beer and wine.

It was different from other Thanksgivings in that we spent it with some close friends and their "Family". This "family" turned out to be all the old, gay friends of our friends' dad, who is himself gay. Now, "Dad's" a great guy and BW and I thoroughly like him, but of some of the other guys at this party...

Well, we won't get into that. :D

I had an interesting discussion with a labmate of mine about the history of Thanksgiving, and the central role that the Pilgrim's Faith played in that holiday. Since a lot of people in my lab are foreigners, it was apparently news to them that the Thanks being given was to God as well as to the local natives.

Anyways, I've had two workouts over the weekend so far, one of which at a new gym we went to try out. It was the first time I've ever used a Fat Bar for Deadlifts. It certainly changes things - 455 felt WAY heavier than it does on a standard bar. Either that or I was still in an insulin-induced stupor from the prior day's feasting.

I strict OHP'd 185 for 5 (like I said, weak with no leg drive), and dipped +125 for 5. The gym we were trying out had no weights over by their dipping bars, so we lugged a bunch of 25s from the other end of the building. They had every machine under the sun, but the concept of weighted dips was apparently unheard of... :\

Yesterday was Leg Hypertrophy and GPP day. Gaaawwww-LEE was Mesomorph in it's element for this workout. High reps with low rest meant I had a pump that left me hobbling like I'd gone home with one of the Thanksgiving Guys. I also leg-pressed 750x20 by sheer force of will; after 15 I wanted to follow the advice of Job's friends ("Curse God and die") but I forced out the last 5 with no cursing or blaspheming whatsoever. :p

Today's bench accessory and probably some DE deads - I need to work on my technique a bit.

So, I have 4 bottles of Androhard and 4 of Dermacrine in my fridge. I'm busting into them in January.

Considering stacking these with something "harder" and I'm looking for suggestions. Whaddya guys think?

Testosterone!! :439:

Things go better with TEST....don't think the Dermacrine would be needed then.

I am certainly open to the idea of an injected cycle; it'd actually be my preference for long-term health. I just haven't found a source I trust. Any ideas could be PM'd if worthwhile. And BW is somewhat unconvinced it's a good idea (even though she loves me being "big" and constantly tells me so)

Your right though, stacking Derma w/Test of any kind would be pretty pointless.

They love the look, but hate what it takes to get there! :trout:

Fortunately for me my GF doesn't ask questions. Not once have I heard, "What's that stuff?" as I shoot liquid from a syringe into my mouth. - I think she just trusts me to know what I'm doing.

You can't blame BW for being skeptical of shooting up gear, though. Very few women would even allow you to consider it, so you're doing pretty well already.

That is true. You still dating the flight attendant? I can't remember her name, sorry.

It's funny, I practically live in a medical center, you'd think I'd have all kinds of connections for anabolics. But the only sources I have would be for cell culture media, DNA and antibodies. Not so helpful. :p

January's cycle will therefore most likely be oral/topical. I'm planning on it being longish, 6wks or so, so toxicity is a factor.

Phera or Furaza are being considered. Any NTBM reps wanna send some Katanadrol my way?;)

on an entirely unrelated note, this is a Nudibranch:

I've decided that someone needs to open a strip club named "The Nudey Branch" in honor of this animal.

That is all.

Except that I should really make an actual update - I did some good stuff this week! Tomorrow. Right now, I sleep.

That looks like something from a mushroom trip...

Looks like a damn Pokemon character!

Both are true and i think Pokeman in general were a result of several mushroom trips.

That's a series of games I have never played. My mother was sure they were evil. From what I've seen, they look fun, but too much of a time sink for me to play them now.

Thought you all might like to know the important numbers from last week:

Squatted 405 for a solid triple off a 14" Box

Pin Pressed 355 from a dead stop. Missed 365 because I couldn't lock it out. I'm sticking with pin press until it matches my 405 bench, since explosivity is my weakpoint right now.

Dipped 150 for a triple, this is an all time PR

Not bad, all in all. This week I deload and Saturday I fly out to california to visit my family for a month. OOOOOhhh how sweet it will be to turn my brain off and do no science whatsoever.

.

I think I need to put more emphasis on my Pin Presses, too. I actually need to start working my 3 and 4 brds on the bench as well. I couldn't stick the lockout on my 325 bench this week. I'm going to attempt again next Sunday, probably with 330.

I have to admit I'm disappointed with the cycle I've been on. Haven't seen anything as far as strength. Recomp has been going pretty well, but that's not really a concern of mine these days.

That's a bummer. I'm sure you'll hit that 330 regardless of the cycle being subpar. Just eat a boatload of carbs and salt the night before. ;)

That was probably the issue. My diet has been falling short of exceptional. - Getting to see OTR that night made everything better. :D

I've been slacking in general. Just not putting in the effort I should on any of it, but even so, I've been hitting PRs regularly. I hit 425 for a triple on Squats the day after Thanksgiving, up 10lbs from the 415lbs I hit with you spotting me a month or so ago.

My GF is a naturally talented spotter, so she does a great job with all of that, especially on my bench. She really lets me struggle before helping at all. I think she may like watching me in pain. :p

is that a poisonous slug or something?

I wonder what they taste like?

And don't tell me "chicken". I hear that lie all the time. :lmao:

You guys are throwing around some big numbers in here.

I'm still doing my O-lifts, but my numbers PAAAALEEEE in comparison, O-lift-stically.

185lbs x 3 Jerk Press
205lbs x 3 Hang Clean
155lbs x 3 Hang Snatch.

yeah.......

Pfft, whatever, when I snatch, I can't drop under the bar for anything. I'm too stiff. Same with my cleans - even if I pull from the floor, it ends up being a power clean. So you're weight may be lower, but I guarantee your form is better.:squareeyed:

I don't understand how the Olympians can drop under the bar hams to calves on the snatch with 300+ lbs over their head. The core strength is unfathomable at that point.

Practise, practise, practise. Year after year pounding the weights. Relentless dedication.
Tenacity in the face of adversity.

You get the idea.......

TIME FOR A HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF

I am now officially done for the semester with all education-related foo-fa-rah. I will be enjoying 3 weeks of pure, unadulterated Christmas vacation.

California here I come! (Flight leaves tomorrow at 10!)

And, what better way to start off the Holiday than with some double split action? We'll be staying at BW's grandparents house next week and there is a gym about 500 yards from their yard. I'm going to eat everything I can get my hands on and train like there's no tomorrow.

Nice big man! Enjoy the down time.
