Pink Magic????

For those interested in Pink Magic you may want to read this post by Athony Roberts:

Back in 2008, a study was conducted on Massularia Acuminata (Massularia Accuminate = alternate spelling) and its effects on testosterone. The abstract was published online, and was reposted on several websites. In late 2009 and early 2010, I looked into it because Daniel Clough from At Large Nutrition was planning to add a test booster to his product line, and he had contacted me (long story) as the potential formulator for the product.

I looked into dozens of testosterone boosting herbs, and this one was on my list. Anyway, I purchased the full study and read it…and quickly decided that this herb had exactly ZERO potential to be used in a testosterone boosting nutritional supplement. It simply doesn’t raise testosterone very high, and even then, it can’t do it without taking impossibly high megadoses.

But, since most supplement buyers don’t purchase and read studies full studies (*when the abstract is available for free), the door was (and is) left open for it to be used in a nutritional supplement. I’ll tell you why it’s not going to work in a second, but first, I want you to check out the abstract:

J Ethnopharmacol. 2008 Aug 13;118(3):508-13. Epub 2008 May 28. Androgenic potentials of aqueous extract of Massularia acuminata (G. Don) Bullock ex Hoyl. stem in male Wistar rats. Yakubu MT, Akanji MA, Oladiji AT, Adesokan AA. Medicinal Plants Research Laboratory, Department of Biochemistry, University of Ilorin, PMB 1515, Ilorin, Nigeria. [email protected] Abstract The use of medicinal plants in the management of several ailments is gaining popularity nowadays. Massularia acuminata, one of such plants is commonly used as chewing sticks due to its antimicrobial activity and the aqueous extract of its stem as an aphrodisiac. Aphrodisiac activity in some plants may be due to androgen increasing property of its phytochemicals. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study therefore sought to assess the androgenic potentials of aqueous extract of Massularia acuminata stem in male rats for 21 days. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male rats weighing between 220 and 260 g were completely randomized into four groups: A, B, C and D. Group A, the control received orally 1 ml of distilled water (the vehicle) while groups B, C and D were orally administered with 1 ml each corresponding to 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg body weight of the plant extract, respectively for 21 days. Rats were sacrificed 24h after 1, 7 and 21 days. RESULTS: Compared with the control, extract administration at all the doses produced significant increase (P<0.05) in testes-body weight ratio, testicular protein, glycogen, sialic acid, cholesterol, testosterone, luteinizing and follicle stimulating hormone concentrations throughout the period of administration. Testicular gamma glutamyl transferase activities were decreased significantly (P<0.05) after the first dose and was sustained throughout the experimental period. CONCLUSION: The available evidence in this study suggests that aqueous extract of Massularia acuminata stem has androgenic potential which may stimulate male sexual maturation and enhance normal testicular function. PMID: 18602232 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
So, at first blush, it looks vaguely promising, right? But check out the dose required…the lowest dose examined in the study was 250mgs/kg! On a kg/kg (simple comparative bodyweight) basis you’ll need about 25 grams of the stuff per day for a 100kg (220lb) bodybuilder, going off the absolute lowest dose. The highest dose would require 100g/day based on a 220lb (100kg)human bodyweight. However, this is based on human weight versus rodent weight. Now, if we convert the rodent dose to the human dose equivalent using the accepted body surface area formula, we find that we need just over 4 grams per day. And that’s at the lowest dose examined – we’d double that dose for the 500mgs/kg (over 8 grams per day) and double it again for the 1,000mgs/kg dose (over 16 grams per day). Currently, only two companies (that I know of) are using this herb in a product, and the dose per serving is (at best) on par with (but likely lower than) even the lowest dose examined in the study (250mgs/kg), translated to anything resembling a human equivalent. The daily suggested dose (all of the daily servings added up) contained in the proprietary blends currently being sold on the market still isn’t likely to be equivalent to the lowest dose in the study.

In fact, even if the 250mg/kg equivalent dose were being used (and it isn’t), the testosterone boost provided would be 12%. But since nowhere near this dose is being used…have I made my point yet? The full study is much more interesting, because when we crunch the numbers, we find out that the rodents were being given an ungodly amount of this stuff, and barely getting any kind of decent test boost! So how much of a boost in serum testosterone did the herb provide? Well, we don’t know, because the study doesn’t tell us. Wait…what? Yeah, you read that correctly, the study doesn’t actually look at serum testosterone levels. So what about free testosterone levels? Well, the study doesn’t look at that either. The study examines intratesticular testosterone, LH, and a bunch of other stuff (testicular glycogen, testicular sailic acid concentration, etc…) but provides no hard data on how much of a real test boost the herb provided. So, as you can see, even if you were chocking down thousands of milligrams per day of the stuff, the rodent data suggests that after 21 days, your LH will get around a 60% boost (rodents in the control group were 1.27 and the 1,000mg/kg group ended up at 2.14) , and your testicular testosterone will go up about the same, roughly 60% (the rodents in the control group were 3.37, while rodents in the 1,000mg/kg group were 5.38 ng/dl). But of course, none of the companies using this ingredient are using anywhere near an effective dose. This is why I abandoned the idea of using this stuff in a product formulation, and focused my research and development elsewhere.

But as the saying goes, there’s a sucker born every minute, and no shortage of supplement manufacturers looking to scam them.

a lot of usp haters. if your claiming PM wont work then why are so many people having such great results w/ it?
i just started it and can tell you it works.
your arguments dont take into consideration that you can extract the certain compounds from the plant...

I was going to say the same thing. Ive been on it for two weeks now and I can def... feel a dif.. in strength(just a little), recovery and for some reason mood. I cant wait to see what happens in the next two weeks on this.

The sad thing is that, like the article says, the companies don't always do all the research. They may not even be trying to scam us, but their laziness creates a scam............................................................................................................................................................I will say this. I tried to write a review on Nutra, saying that I was skeptical of the product. I was logged in, and the site was letting me write the review. The next day, their was no review from me, but a few good reviews, and one bad review just to balance them out.

So you wrote a review when you have't tried the product yet? No wonder why it was deleted...

a lot of usp haters [...] blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda [...]
Why can't there be a discussion about the science of the extraction, rather than calling someone a hater? In the same regard, would you prefer to be labeled a hype chasing fanboy because you support said product? I don't think so, so if you cannot discuss the actual ingredient(s) in a mature manner, move on. The OP posted an abstract to support his view, where is your intellectual support? Or was it in fact the "hater" comment?

and the abstract posted has been disproved in other threads...

so maybe someone should post a new abstract that has nothing to do with anthony roberts.
That does not answer my question in regards to the OP being called a "hater." And from observing your signature, I can definitely conclude that you would be biased with any/all reviews for said company.

I beta tested Pink Magic, and ran it for 8 weeks...I know first hand that it works

This has been discussed at length, and please reference my post in the following thread for clarification:

i just started it and can tell you it works.
your arguments dont take into consideration that you can extract the certain compounds from the plant...

Before I start, let me clarify that my reply is not an accusation to anyone or questioning a specific user or specific company. Just general response to common behavior I am seeing on the forums.

First, the mind is powerful. I can stand infront of you and psych you up and make you lift 10 more lbs, or I can mess with your head and make you fail to lift weight you previously lifted. This is well known in psychology, and if I was infront of you in person I can demonstrate it using simple technique. The fact that users tend to get great results off of supplements they are psyched about is not surprising.
In some tests where some users were given placebo for weight loss products actually lost more weight than those who were on the supp or medicine itself. So reading someone who is trying something he or she is so excited about and noticing results is not surprising. If you look for something, you will find it.

Second, all the tests that supp companies run are hardly reliable. Not because the companies are cheating or scaming people. But because of the way the tests are conducted. There is a reason research is done a certain way.
You want to run a legit test, and I am not talking about expensive research here, have them ship the product to neutral party who will pick testers and send out the bottles, half legit, and half placebo without letting them know there is placebo in the mix. You will quickly notice that people from both groups will report similar results, or complaints. I doubt companies would be willing to take such risk though because it has a high risk of killing the product once the list of who is on placebo and who is on legit product comes out.

Third, I am at a loss here. Those who point fingers at supplement companies, do you want FDA regulations, and govt laws telling us what we can and cannot do when it comes to regulating supplements, vitamins, prohormones..etc? We claim to be adults and we can make our own choices, yet we get upset at companies that may tweak research results or manipulate the testing to push new supplements on the market.

We either want them regulated and with gov't oversight, or you need to be an informed buyer and don't use the products. If there is no demand, there won't be supply. You cannot expect supplement companies to regulate themselves. No business in the world will ever regulate themselves effectively.

And those who blindly back supplement companies? These companies are not your "friend." They are out to make money. Questioning them is healthy. That what keeps them in check sometimes and makes them think twice before they release the next product. If you had good results from a product, then good for you. State your opinion or frankly stay quiet, but don't start defending companies you have no relationship with. They are out to make money, and we work hard for our money. If we are convinced, by all means we will spend it. Plenty of examples of that. But if we have doubts, we don't need people forcing their opinions on the rest. Let them earn their money.

Peace, love, hate, war, whatever makes you lift better. Enjoy.

underdosed and overpriced:deal: but:hitit: for $29.99:shhh:but keep that on the low-low
i love usplabs products i can't lie and i know this product is one of the best natural non hormonal supps in it's class, i just think personally it's just crazily over priced, especially for it's debut, then after that if it is the business then so be it, but for it's first introductory price at what it has been "HELL-NO"!

What does get me is this:

Out of all the herbs which he located, he only found THIS ONE that was worthless, in his opinion? Laughable. Why not post all of the herbs that he found to be worthless, not just this one. Wait? The reason why he quoted this study was because he obviously had a vested interest in wrecking havoc on this particular herb.

idk id try but id expect alot from it and it prolly wont meet my standards so i dont think i would like to pay $70 for some broscience, people saying it works isnt going to convince me unless those guys are putting on atleast 15l bs and not just saying "yeah i felt full", "i look better". to me your feelings dont mean squat i expect PM to add solid lbs to somebody especially since its $70

I been on it for one week and already feel the difference not saying a major difference yet is only one week but i def feel it and loving it..i could imagine after the 3rd week...

in terms of price. i see it as my hobby and is better than spending $200 or more in a bar or better yet for drugs (who ever does it) ...idk just my .02

OT but I always enjoy your seemingly unbiased posts and both pragmatic and logical perspective on these type of threads ;)

thats my take on all supplements.

other people spend in casinos, at restaurants, drinking, in relationships, but mine is spent to enhance my physical and mental potential.

What about if or when the price drops to, say, 49.99? Or, 39.99?

Do you think you would partake then?

exactly my point. why not spend it on something beneficial and something u love right? when i used to club omg i would spend 200-600 per night and for what? people complain to damn much! is annoying as hell...is like lifting u either give up or push a few more forced reps..so u either buy or dont buy!

Or instead of trying to justify things, why not do what so few do: save money! Oh wow, now there's something different, huh?

true true...but u always need something to do..in terms of spending bcause itll go to something eventually..u can save and buy stuff...woman buy shoes men buy supplements and condoms lmfao

Hahahaa! LOL!
Well, I see so many people who spend a lot of money on things such as supplements when they do not have such necessities such as Health Insurance, Car Insurance, or some that are well over 18 and are still at home with Mommy. To me, everyone needs to have at least enough money in savings and/or investments (obtainable) to live off of for 2 years if needed. That's how I roll; of course, it is my opinion as well.

But I will never down anyone for trying to better their health.

your 100% right...i feel the same..bills and savings need to be in par before spending...i think the people who are some what not financially stable or reckless with spending are the ones who complain the most...

prolly not either i would try it for $20-30, thats just me cuz i have acess to the real things so to me im gonna take the sure thing, over something that might be amazing, and it prolly is amazing but im still gonna take real stuff over it( i know thats not a fair comparison but hey)

Maybe and Maybe not. I have posted about arginine and its bogus claims. As well as many other things. Do I have time to list all the bogus herbs out there? No but maybe he does and he does not. I do not know.

I concur.
I could be like most of my friends and relatives my age and spending it on a wife and a house full of kids. Not a bad thing but I prefer not having to manage my time around a family and being able to choose exactly wehre most of my income goes.

Besides I spoil their little munchkins occasionally.

Of two minds about that one.
Ideally, your standard is a good one.

But some people will never earn enough to save that much , unless they saved for like 30 years.
And one never knows when one is going to drop from this mortal coil.

If they can buy a few supps and make sure their bills are current, then it's copacetic.
Besides most of the people who I know are missing the necessities or living with mommy are not buying supps, they buy drugs , souped up vehicles and name brand clothing, and just party all the time.

(unless you count the 'juicehead' type guys in the media and that is more a cultural thing anyway).

yea thats true not everyone can save enough to live on two years..thats probably a good 30k min saved besides other things so imagine....yea like i said and u. supplements is not a bad thing unless u cont to throw it away and not learn what u doing or but than again thats the excitement on trying something new ex: pink magic lol again im loving it...but yea that was me as well party, party, woman woman and more woman...and brand new clothes all the time

I disagree. Anyone can invest, and once you do, it is very easy to obtain the $45-60k needed to live for two years if one lost their job. But that is another thread... :)

Let me state "for the record" that I am not a USP hater but neither am I USP fan. I just think that supplement companies need to be accountable for there products. Science and safety need to be presented on every product they sell. Athony Roberts is a pretty sharp cookie, I just posted the results of his study. Take it for what it's worth.

what are the expectations of running a full bottle of PM? I know a lot of people are feeling something with the product. Curious about what the end result will be.

I disagree with that one.
And I am sure minimum wage workers and those only able to cover their bills with only a bit of disposable income left would agree with me.

That even with a 1000 saved every months thats 4 years.
And some of those folks only have 100. Which would be probably most of their career.

By all means feed your kids and spoil your wife before buying any supplement.

Thats why I chose to forgo a wife and kids.
The pursuit for human perfection is way more time and money worthy to me anyway.

As a dedicated individual once said, ' a man must put his passion first and the world second, unless he wants to limit his potential.'

I was lucky enough to be chosen to run/log PM not to long ago. You can check my review out in the USP subforum section. The bottle I (and others) was given, was only 120pills and not as strong, or effective as what was now released. So take that into account with what I'm about to say.

I was in an extreme cal deficit dialing things in for a show. When I started the run, I was already tightened down to around 2k cal. When I finished the run, I was somewhere around high 1700cal. Now...in that given defecit with minimal cal intake, 105min cardio a day (give or take each day) along with grinding through your workouts. Imagine the strength loss or, ability to not achieve a pump or, loss of fullness to the muscle a natural athlete would more then likely suffer.

Now lets take that same natural athlete and same given scenario. Just, the only difference is he's supplementing with PinkMagic. I "maintained" my strength which is HUGE as that is a distinct marker of holding onto muscle (only thing that went down was my stamina but that is inevitable when starches are low). Was able to achieve a great pump throughout my workout. Obviously not as great as when I have high amounts of carbs in me due to glycogen retention but, other preps I've been flat as a pancake untill I peak since no carbs thus achieving no pump. PinkMagic honestly blew my mind in both of those aspects!!!

Bottomline, if that is what PinkMagic did for me eating 1700 cals. Just imagine what it could do for you when your putting down 3500k + (or whatever it be, which Im sure is more then 1700 lol) Your also getting 60 more pills with a better bang in each pill then the testers had? End result...I don't know exactly what for you but, it can be safe to say it'll end with you being happy!

???

I am simply providing an alternative view point. There are two sides to every story, and only one side (Anthony Roberts) was being presented.

Indeed.

I personally find it objectionable when some people feign objectivity while overtly attacking the integrity of specific supplement companies. The legitimacy of a compound as a bioactive pharmacological agent is neither compromised because it is was successfully used in a rodent trial, nor is its legitimacy questionable because the results were not isolated in a double-blind placebo-controlled study presented in a peer-reviewed journal. While double-blind placebo-controlled studies are the gold-standards of clinical trials, not every effective compound is backed by such a study, so the existence of such a study is not a sufficient pre-condition for ascertaining the a priori validity of a compound as an effective agent for specific MoAs.

So, there is no contention that double-blind placebo-controlled studies are the gold standard for determining objective compound or product efficacy. Yet, for supplement companies, the required resources for conducting such properly designed trials with a statistically significant sample size (trials on herbal products tend to require a large sample size) are not trivial.

Furthermore, the lack (or dearth) of studies or standardized trials behind specific ingredients does not automatically suggest these ingredients cannot provoke desired pharmacological effects. In any case, double-blind placebo controlled studies are far from perfect. In particular, as is well-known, even properly designed double-blind placebo-controlled studies may still be hard to conduct and their results hard to interprete, especially when participants are able to break the blind, that is when they can tell if they are getting the placebo or the non-placebo, either due to the side effects they may be experiencing, or even from the taste/smell of the placebo versus non-placebo blends. Furthermore, the results of a well-designed double-blind placebo-controlled study may lack statistical significance, and consequently fail to convey any analytical value. Apart from this, the sample used in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial may lack representativeness of the larger population, thus compromising the generalization of the obtained results. And so on. So, while double-blind placebo-controlled studies are at the apex of research, they are not without fault, if they are not properly designed and executed.

So, anyone that considers a compound "crap", as some individuals like to put it, should base this conclusion on sound reasoning following established principles of molecular biochemistry, endocrinology, and relevant fields. Challenging the translation algorithm of rodent dosage protocols into human equivalents is not enough.

Now, a word or two on logs and their reliability, even though that may not be the main theme here. While I agree some logs may lack objectivity, and while I would ideally prefer a properly designed and sufficiently large double-blind placebo-controlled trial, I reject the notion that all logs are worthless. Many loggers are experienced bodybuilders and athletes with their training and diet under control. For such individuals, it is not inconceivable that they would be able to tell how the addition of a specific compound or product, for instance Pink Magic, to their daily ritual affects their results. Anecdotal evidence from such loggers or product testers will continue to be sought after, and is likely to remain an important part of product-efficacy tests in the supplement industry.

Lastly, I was a Pink Magic beta tester. In fact, I was one of the early testers. The capsules were green and came in unmarked bottles, and I had absolutely no clue what the ingredient(s) was(were), so I had no idea of what to expect. I simply reported what I felt. So, my Pink Magic log was as pure and unbiased as a log could get.
