Building my own home gym

Board Sponsor
I have had enough of the place I go to. So I have some stuff on its way to the house and I am going to make my own gym.

Treadmill on its way :)
Power Rack, 480lbs olympic set, and weight tree

Will shortly start building my dumbbell collection as well.

I would have been happy to stay but the person who opens early is inconsistent. So I get there by 4:30am and on some days they are already there, then others they are not there till 5am.

Additionally, I was asked to compete in their first ever powerlifting competition. However, some "competitors" complained about my entrace due to my other competition experience. So they changed the format to a Wilks formula base. Then complained again that I will cut weight and still win. Cant handle the drama, so I will be out within the month.

The question is am I going to compete anyway? Hell yeah. I said yes originally for fun, now that they made it an issue, I am going to drop the water and weigh in at 190, and embarass the hell out of them. :)

Just a vent.

If you have any home gyms yourself, post the info. Would love to see what people here have

The only stuff I don't have at home is leg equipment(hack squat, leg press, etc)pretty good collection from family members. All the men on my dads side are into weight training so it was easy for me to grab some here and there. I still go to the gym, but using the old weights at home makes me feel grounded and focused. Some of the weights are older than me and came from my grandfather and one day I'll pass it all on to my son.

"Try getting psyched up for a heavy four-board press with Justin Timberlake blaring on the loudspeakers. I’m all for bringing “Sexy Back,” but I’ll save it for the dance floor, not my training session."

Squat rack in a 3rd floor apt? why not?

lol we aren't allowed to have weights over 10 lbs in the apartment. It is in the lease...
Can you imagine carrying a squat rack up 3 flights of stairs then all the weights with it? That'd be a days workout in itself.

I am fortunate to have this in my basement, not nearly as many stairs.

WIll be placing my orders soon, just waiting on the last of my money for it :woohoo:

Ive done it. All my stuff is at my buddy's metal fab shop in the city. building is 6 floors tall.

My rack, EFS bench, 1000lbs weight, chains, famers walk handles, DL platform - all up on the third floor, only accessible by stairs. SUCKED.

You see the pricing I got on some of this stuff... I go to sporting goods and search "gym" and "weight", every morning....

Craigslist all the way. I have a very nice home gym that i have built over the past couple years all purchased from craigslist. Hell i bought a 5-50 Lbs hex dumbell set with a rack for 150.00. The dumbells were NEW and still had the manufacture lables around the grip. I bet i have 5 grand worth of equipment that cost me no more than 800.00.
I am going tonight to look at a hack squat sled that the guy is only asking $200.00 for.

check your local papers for gyms closing as well, i know the gym i go to just bought some equipment from a gym that was closing and the guy got machines for cheap, i'm sure plates and bars would be even cheaper

Good point, I have seen a few of those deals lately in my area.

There's a flee market in my area that always has crazy, dirt cheap deals. might want to check your area. late in the day they don't want to haul the stuff home.

Craigslist for the win!! I bought a power rack, bench, 45 hyper, a bunch of different bars and over 1k lbs in free weights and alot of little extra things all for 500 bucks.

ok, so here is the update. The powerrack is in and assembled. The treadmill is as well. Tomorrow am is the last bit. My 480lbs olympic set will be in. I am also going to purchase 2 more 45's and I am golden. Cannot wait to officially workout tomorrow afternoon, and it is also deads day :woohoo:

I need to take some pictures of my friend's home gym (that he NEVER uses) and the significant other's home gym. The SO's gym is her brother's play pen from back in high school football. Both people have everything and it's so nice. Smith racks, benches, arm sections, dumbell racks, cable cages, everything. So many expensive single purpose machines spread in the rooms it is insane. I wish I had that cash. Driving to the gym is the worst. I'd love to roll out of bed and work out. I still prefer gym treadmills and cardio equipment though, and would never pay like $9,000 for a treadmill for the house.

the weights are here :) once I get home today, it will be time to bring it in

AE so how nice is it to workout at house?

One other thing I forgot to mention in my first post was that $500 that I spent for my home gym is the best/smartest money I have ever spent in my life.

It has been awesome so far. My 7 year old daughter will come down and hang out, and really seems to get a kick of me being home. :)
