shrugs

Whats the proper way to do shrugs. Do you roll the shoulders at the top or simply go up and down?

Just go up and down. Rolling adds nothing to the effect and is bad on the joint.

I like to use DB's, hang my head down and lean forward just a little. That way you can really feel the stretch at the bottom.

agreed. if you do front and behind the back shrugs there's no need to "roll the shoulders".

i dont feel that there is a need to roll them even if you only do front or back. the trapezius muscle is an elevator of the shoulders. so by shrugging, youre elevating the shoulder. problem solved. hold for a one sec contration and top. and try to stand upright with shoulders back when you do them. basically do the lift with your delts/traps in the position they are when you are relaxed. this way they will stand more when youre walking around buldging through your shirt

if feel that deadlifts are probably the best trap killer tho

I'd love to start doing deadlifts but my lower back has a tendency to "go out" on me.
